B-Note May 19, 2016

May 19, 2016

Greetings fellow Tigers!

It’s a quiet week here on campus, as most of our students have set off for their summer break and the seniors have walked across the stage into the next exciting chapter of their lives. Even so, the bustle of construction continues as does our work on the Will to Lead campaign. It is never boring here at Clemson!

This week, President Clements traveled to Baltimore and joined Harvard University President Drew Gilpin Faust as featured commencement speakers at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). President Clements is a three-time alumnus of UMBC with a bachelor degree in computer science, a Master of Science and a Ph.D. of operations analysis. President Clements received an honorary doctor of education degree at the ceremony.  He says he has enjoyed watching UMBC “skyrocket into one of the hottest universities in the country.” It is a public research university in the University of Maryland system with an enrollment of approximately 14,000 students. Read more about President Clements’ honor here.

As you’re making plans for the Memorial Day weekend, take time to join us on campus as we remember those who have fallen in service to our nation. The public is invited to a ceremony Sunday, May 29 at 4 pm, at the University’s Scroll of Honor memorial. The service will feature patriotic songs, a 21-gun salute and remarks by Chaplain Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Eric Turner. Turner, a 1982 Clemson graduate, served tours of duty in Germany, Iraq and Afghanistan. He retired with 32 years of military service in the Army and National Guard.

Did you get a chance to drop by the Clemson booth at Artisphere last weekend in Greenville, S.C.? It was quite a success as students and faculty in the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) initiative presented demonstrations and engaging activities for adults and children. Browse through these photos of kids getting into the Clemson STEAM spirit.

The Thomas F. Chapman Leadership Scholars commencement celebration took place on May 6. The Class of 2016 Thomas F. Chapman Leadership Scholars from the College of Business and Behavioral Science were honored with a medallion and certificate. The three-year leadership program, created by Tom Chapman ’65, is designed to enrich students’ academic preparation beyond the classroom and curriculum, and support the college’s mission to develop leadership abilities in its students. Guests included Chapman and his wife Karen, as well as the families of the scholars. Learn more about the Thomas F. Chapman Leadership Scholars, and see a video and photos of the celebration.

Carley Cofield of Goose Creek, S.C., is a perfect example of the perseverance and the will to succeed that can be found in so many of our students. Take a moment to hear her inspiring and heartwarming story of achieving her goal of a Clemson degree in wildlife and fisheries biology. She overcame challenges and setbacks, but thanks to hard work and an endowment by Jim Kennedy to establish the James C. Kennedy Waterfowl and Wetlands Center, Carly is now on her way to graduate school at Mississippi State.

It is generous and caring individuals such as you who make such stories possible today and into the future. Thank you for all you do.

Go Tigers!
