At the CAAH Honors and Awards Ceremony in April, the following faculty awards were announced:

Dean’s Council of Students Award for Excellence in Advising:  Meredith McCarroll (English)
Dean’s Council of Students Award for Excellence in Teaching:  Stephen Sperry (planning, development and preservation)

CAAH’s 5th class of Creativity Professors:
School of the Arts:  Valerie Zimany (art)
School of Design and Building:  Ufuk Ersoy (architecture)
School of the Humanities:  Chenjerai Kumanyika (communication studies)


At the University’s final faculty/staff meeting of the academic year, the following CAAH faculty were recognized:

Frank E. Burtner Award for Excellence in Advising Students: Graciela Tissera (languages)
Douglas Bradbury Award for contributions to the Calhoun Honors College: Meredith McCarroll (English)


At the College’s final meeting of the academic year, the following staff and faculty members were recognized:

Lightsey Fellows Program
Established by Dr. and Mrs. Harry M. Lightsey with an original pledge of $100,000, the endowment provides support for junior faculty members in the humanities in the College for summer research projects which will advance their scholarship. A peer-review committee of faculty has judged these proposals and a summer stipend of $4,000 each is attached to these awards:

  • Megan Eatman, Department of English
  • Mashal Saif, Department of Philosophy and Religion

John B. and Thelma A. Gentry Award for Teaching Excellence in the Humanities
Established by Frank and Sarah Gentry to honor Mr. Gentry’s parents, John and Thelma Gentry, this award recognizes an outstanding humanities faculty member and provides an annual competitive fund supporting projects, materials and activities to improve and enrich teaching in the humanities. A peer-review committee of faculty has judged these proposals and a summer stipend of $4,000 is attached to the award.

Dean’s Awards for Staff
The two annual staff awards are peer-reviewed and come with a plaque of recognition, placement on the list of award winners in the dean’s office and $1,000.

  • Dean’s Award for Excellence in Outstanding Customer Service:  Shekinda Ward (AAH Business Office)
  • Dean’s Team Player Award:  James Breitmeier (performing arts)
