THIS WEEK IN SOUTH CAROLINA
In accordance with state law, the South Carolina General Assembly adjourned sine die at 5 o’clock pm on Thursday, May 11.
The Sine Die Resolution (S.692) which was adopted by both the House and the Senate enables the General Assembly to return after sine die adjournment to work on the state budget, conference committee reports, and other items agreed on by both bodies. The dates for the General Assembly’s return are May 23-25.
Since this is the first year of a two year session, bills that did not pass this session will retain their current status and be carried over to the 2018 legislative session.
The House adjourned debate on H.3722, a $498M Capital Projects Bond Bill until January 2018. The bill currently includes projects listed below for Clemson University:
– Daniel Hall Renovation $10 million
– Martin Hall Renovation $15 million
The conference report on the South Carolina Infrastructure and Economic Development Reform Act (H.3516) was passed by the House and Senate and sent to Governor McMaster, who vetoed the bill. The House and Senate overrode the governor’s veto on Wednesday.
BUDGET
The Appropriations Bill (H.3720) is now in a conference committee which will negotiate the differences in the House and Senate versions. The Conference Committee began their work last week and will continue this week.
Members of the budget conference committee are Representatives Brian White (R-Anderson), Mike Pitts (R-Laurens), and Leon Stavrinakis (D-Charleston) and Senators Hugh Leatherman (R-Florence), Nikki Setzler (D-Lexington) and Sean Bennett (R-Dorchester).
