Margaret Whiston, Summer 2017 Graphic Communications Intern with Milliken and Company

During my summer internship at Milliken, I worked on various projects that allowed me to explore and apply different skills that I have learned through our GC curriculum. I was able to utilize my design skills and my knowledge of Adobe CC to create mockups for marketing pitches that were then presented to large companies in the hopes of gaining their business. Additionally, with the creation of a website for the division I was working for, I was able to use my HTML and CSS coding skills to show my boss various layouts, image options, etc. using Google Inspect tools that allowed her to visually see and experiment with the website without having to consult with an outside agency. Many of the photos on the website were taken by me through various photoshoots that I had throughout the 3 months. There were numerous small projects I worked on which helped me apply my graphic design knowledge to benefit my Milliken team. The positive relationships I gained through this internship has allowed for additional opportunities to do future work for Milliken. The company really invests in their interns and I’ve loved learning about the history of the brand, working with passionate people, and exploring future opportunities.

I’ve also discovered I enjoy the marketing side of graphics that focuses on creating marketing materials that appeal to customers. Because of the wide range of projects, I was able to apply multiple skills rather than specializing in just one. This made each day different and project driven which definitely required really great time management skills. Overall, I truly enjoyed my internship at Milliken and I am excited to continue my relationship with my coworkers and the company through freelance work and another possible internship the following summer.
