The 2014-2015 Victor Hurst Convocation begins Clemson University’s 122nd academic year. The event will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014, at the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts in the auditorium. A reception will be held in celebration of the new academic year immediately following the meeting.
Michael M. Crow, 16th president of Arizona State University, has agreed to provide the 2014-2015 Convocation keynote address. He is guiding the transformation of ASU into one of the nation’s leading public metropolitan research universities, an institution that combines the highest levels of academic excellence, inclusiveness to a broad demographic, and maximum societal impact—a model he terms the “New American University.” Under his direction the university pursues teaching, research, and creative excellence focused on the major challenges of our time, as well as those central to the quality of life, sustainable development, and economic competitiveness of Arizona and the nation. He has committed the university to sustainability, social embeddedness, and global engagement, and championed initiatives leading to record levels of diversity in the student body.
The Clemson faculty, staff and representatives of our student organizations are invited to be a part of this important ceremony in the academic life of our institution. All are encouraged to wear academic regalia in the processional; however, it is more important to participate than it is to enforce a dress code; therefore, all participants will be included in the processional with or without academic regalia. The Campus Bookstore will make it possible for all rentals of regalia for the August commencement to be extended, at no additional cost, to include the 2014 Convocation. However, the bookstore asks that you return your regalia immediately after the ceremony.
The processional, beginning with a line up at 8:15 a.m., will proceed to the Brooks Center at 8:30 a.m. The processional route has been determined and a rehearsal for marshals and banner bearers will be scheduled for Aug. 18. All university employees are encouraged to participate in the processional. Please plan to arrive at your starting point promptly at 8:15 a.m. The wearing of academic regalia is not required, but if yours is readily available please show your colors.
The procession will begin from Sikes, Brackett, and Tillman Halls at 8:30 a.m. The many participants starting from these points will proceed through the Carillon garden and down the walkway to the right of Martin Hall. They will continue on past the reflection pool through the library breezeway (remaining on the sidewalk) to the Brooks Center.
