Crisis on campus? Clemson unveils new emergency web page

By Jackie Todd, Office of Media Relations

You think it can never happen at your university. Amid growing reports of crisis events happening on college campuses across the nation, Clemson is reviewing the way that it provides information during crisis events.

To that end, Clemson has enhanced the way you can access crisis-related information. The new CU Safe Alerts web page will provide information and instructions to faculty, staff and students during emergency and selected non-emergency occurrences.

The recently unveiled page is a result of collaboration between the Clemson University Police Department, (CUPD), Clemson University Fire Department, Public Affairs, Student Affairs and other university departments. While the CU Safe Alerts page will reference existing safety information, the site’s main purpose is to provide in reverse chronological order (meaning the most recent postings appear first) updates and instructions.

“Especially during an emergency, it is imperative that our campus community be able to get the information that’s needed in a concise format,” said CUPD Chief Eric Hendricks. “We think the new CU Safe Alerts page will accomplish that.”

Messages that go to campus during crisis events will now link faculty, staff and students to the CU Safe Alerts page.

Traditionally during times of crisis, the campus community was directed to the CU Safety web page. That page now has general information about safety, preparedness and other resources.

“There’s a case to be made about the existence of both pages,” Hendricks said. “The CU Safety page has enjoyed a strong brand and we will continue to provide important safety resources using that page.

“But during times of emergency, the CU Safe Alerts page will be the go-to for important information, updates and instructions.”
