CUPD: Report indoor bats, seek treatment immediately if contacted

A bat was found inside the Hendrix Student Center on campus this week. Bats and other wild animals can carry rabies and transfer the disease to humans and pets through their bites.

If you see a bat indoors, do not try to remove it yourself. If you are in a residence hall or student housing, contact University Housing at 864-656-5450. If you are in another campus building, contact CUPD at 864-656-2222. Students who have made contact with a bat should seek immediate treatment at Redfern Health Center (864-656-2233) or visit a local emergency room, while faculty and staff should visit a local emergency room.

Avoid contact with wild animals, including feral cats. Do not feed cats or other animals on campus. Feeding them encourages them to stay on campus and spilled or spoiled food may attract nuisance animals, such as skunks. Do not tamper with animal traps on campus. They may be used for research projects or to catch nuisance animals.

For more information, contact the DHEC Bureau of Environmental Health Services Greenville office at 864-372-3273.
