Free financial literacy series: How to set financial goals and build a safety net

No matter what stage you are in your career at Clemson, it’s always a good time to set financial goals and build a safety net. Attend any or all of the free seminars listed below, and gain key information that will help you make important, practical steps toward securing your financial future.

Each seminar in the Financial Literacy Series is designed to provide free education on one or more of the following topics: personal finance, debt management, budgeting, investments planning, retirement planning and risk management.

Sponsored by the Office of Human Resources (OHR), these on-campus, one-hour seminars are offered on select Fridays at the centrally-located Academic Success Center (map). Your upcoming seminars include:

·         June 3 – Halfway There: A Retirement Checkup
This mid-career financial checkup will help you evaluate your current savings and formulate a plan to reach your savings goals. Build an awareness of how to manage competing goals, including saving for college and a host of other financial commitments.

·         June 10 – Planning for Financial Security
Gain key information about the main areas of financial planning: cash management, tax planning, risk management, retirement planning, estate planning, investment planning and long-term care.

·         July 22 – Save More for Retirement: Supplemental Retirement Plans
Compare the different supplemental retirement plans available to you, including 401K, 403b and 457 plans. Gain an understanding of how these tax deferral plans compare to Roth IRAs and how each type of plan might fit into your overall retirement strategy.

·         July 29 – Charting Your Course: A Financial Guide for Women
From a financial health evaluation to setting financial goals and honing the skills needed to get the most from your money, this seminar offers a foundation for creating an effective financial plan and is designed specifically to help female members of the University community better prepare for life’s challenges.
