New secure shred bins on campus; new schedule

Photo of the new Shred A Way bin.Improved customer service, decreased risk and reduced operation costs.

Those are the goals for Clemson University’s Recycling and Records Management departments in forming their new partnership with Shred-A-Way on Aug. 1. Shred-A-Way is a service that assists with secure disposal of sensitive documents.

As a result of the partnership, the secure shred bins located in various campus buildings will soon be replaced. The new bin will be emptied every two to four weeks based on historical volume. Those who need to deviate from the two-week service schedule, or who plan to purge a large amount of documents, should contact Tom Jones or Sandra McCurry at 656-4940. Shred-A-Way will charge a nominal fee of $5 each time the bin is emptied and will bill the amount directly to your department.

Remember that everyone is responsible for the security of sensitive information on printed documents. Social Security numbers, credit card numbers and medical information are examples of sensitive information.

Ways to dispose of sensitive documents

  • The most secure way to dispose of information-sensitive documents is through the use of a cross-cut shredder at your desk. If you shred the document as soon as you are finished with it, the information cannot end up in the wrong hands.
  • If you have too many documents to shred at your desk, or if you do not have a cross-cut shredder, secure shred bins are the best option.
  • Documents that need to be stored in accordance with retention schedules should be boxed and sent to Records Management. Records Management ensures those documents are destroyed in a proper manner, relieving you of that burden. Please contact them at 656-0288 with any questions about that process.
