Next steps for 2020Forward

As announced by President Jim Clements earlier this week, the Clemson University board of trustees has tentatively approved both the 2020Forward strategic plan and the most strongly supported college reorganization model. Trustees will review both again at the October board meeting.

Slides summarizing the principal recommendations for both are now available on the 2020Forward website and are linked below.

Provost Bob Jones echoed Clements’ appreciation for the hard work of the university community in creating both the 2020Forward plan and the reorganization models.

“I wish to state the deep appreciation that our president and his entire administrative team feel for the amazing participation and leadership that the campus community provided in developing a path for Clemson’s future,” Jones said.

As a next step, several small leadership teams will be formed and tasked with refining the plans for the board’s review in October. With the board’s final approval, the 2020Forward strategic plan is anticipated to launch in January 2016 and the college reorganization in July 2016.

While many on campus are excited about a potential reorganization, Jones acknowledged the hard work ahead.

“We realize that college reorganization will be quite challenging,” he said. “Furthermore, we know that there are a limited number of departments and faculty groups that have very strong opinions about their final college home. In some cases, well-justified modifications in the plan will be made.”

Additional next reorganization steps, Jones said, will involve additional analysis of implementation costs.

“The goal is to complete a sound reorganization plan that will not only provide optimal structures, but also minimal impact on administrative costs,” he said.
