Like tomatoes? You’re about to like them even more.
Clemson researchers are studying the ability of chlorine dioxide gas to extend the shelf life of tomatoes. And you can help them by participating in a study.
As one of the most consumed products around the world, tomatoes and the shelf life extension of them have been of great interest to researchers. Chlorine dioxide has been effective in much past research in extending the shelf lives of other fruits and vegetables. This study will test the effectiveness of chlorine dioxide gas in the extension of the shelf life of tomatoes. The tests will involve visual analysis and aroma analysis of sliced tomatoes (no tasting).
Familiarization sessions will be conducted to introduce study participants to the sensory procedures needed as part of the study. Familiarization Sessions are scheduled for 10 a.m. on both May 20 and May 22.
Sensory Sessions will be held at Poole Agricultural Center Room A205 (2nd floor, across from the mail room) on May 30, June 3, June 6, June 10, June 13, and June 17. All sessions will begin at 10 a.m.
Participants should try to arrive 5-10 minutes early for an on-time start. Each session should take approximately 10 minutes.
Participants will receive a $20 Walmart gift card. To receive the card, participants must attend at least one familiarization session and at least five out of the six sensory sessions.
