Planned campus-wide electrical outage scheduled for Sat., March 23

By Jackie Todd, University Relations

As Clemson prepares for the future with new buildings and facilities, it’s necessary to have electrical systems and utilities to support the campus upgrades. One of those upgrades is the creation of a 100,000-volt transmission line that will support the efficient transfer of electricity to Clemson’s main campus.

As Duke Energy builds this upgrade, it will be necessary to move the campus electrical substation to a temporary line, so that the upgrade can be completed. Consequently, Clemson’s main campus will experience a planned campus-wide electrical power outage beginning at 6 a.m. Saturday, March 23 as workers connect the campus electrical substation to Duke Energy’s temporary line. The power outage is anticipated to last at least eight hours and all power systems on campus will be affected.

Some changes in operating hours include:

-Barnes and Noble Bookstore, open 2-4 p.m.

-The Fresh Food Company at Core Campus, open 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. (limited menu) and 4:30-7 p.m. (See campus dining locations and hours of operations here.)

-Douthit Hills Fitness Center, closed

-Fike Recreation Center, open 3-8 p.m.

R. M. Cooper Library will be closed March 23, and will reopen 2 p.m. March 24.

-Hendrix Student Center is closed March 23.

Other impacts include campus wireless and wired networking, which will not function in locations without power.

If severe weather prevents workers from performing the transfer on Saturday, the outage will be moved to Sunday, March 24 during the same timeframe.
