CPT Piazza Memorial 5k Run

September 5, 2014

CPT PiazzaThe run is named in honor of Captain Philip B. Piazza, a veteran of the Pacific Theater in World War II. Captain Piazza served in the U.S. Army’s 5307 Provisional Unit, more widely known as Merrill’s Marauders. Captain Piazza’s awards included the Bronze Star with Valor-Device, the Combat Infantryman Badge, two Purple Hearts, and a Presidential Unit Citation.

After the war, CPT Piazza moved to the Clemson area.  He became a huge supporter of the university’s ROTC programs, and remained one until his passing on May 29, 2011.  He would always attend the ROTC programs’ awards ceremony at the end of the year, presenting one of the awards himself.

Half of the proceeds from this year’s event will go towards the Clemson Student Veterans Association Scholarship endowment.  This endowment will fund scholarships for student veterans attending Clemson University.
