Connor Mulvey majored in\naccounting and minored in financial management. Mulvey continued to excel while\nhe completed his graduate degree in Clemson\u2019s MPAcc program. During his time at\nClemson, Mulvey was active in the community and successful in his classes all\nwhile completing three internships \u2014 the last of which secured Mulvey a full time\noffer upon graduation from the MPAcc program. In addition to his classwork, Mulvey\nparticipated in Beta Alpha Psi and Sigma Nu. Through these associations, Mulvey\nbuilt important connections and met fellow students with similar interests. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mulvey\nreflects on his classes at Clemson and considers that although his most\nchallenging classes were data analytics, accounting information systems and\naudit, these classes helped him prepare for the CPA exam and his internships.\nMulvey also appreciates the value he gained from his finance classes which have\nled him to better understand the importance of having a strong financial background\nin his personal and professional life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mulvey gained\nsignificant professional experience by completing three internships while at\nClemson. During the spring of his junior year Mulvey worked with Gartner Inc.\nas part of the company\u2019s lease accounting team. His time at Gartner Inc. was\nhis first introduction to the accounting profession, and he gained first-hand\nexperience in how accounting information systems process and store data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nfollowing two summers Mulvey completed external audit internships with Grant\nThorton and PwC. After his internship with Grant Thorton, Mulvey knew that audit\nwas the best path for him due to the value and interest he found in his work. During\nhis summer at PwC, Mulvey felt part of the team and knew that he could see\nhimself continuing in a Big 4 firm. After his internship with PwC, Mulvey was\noffered a full-time position in the PwC Atlanta office upon completion of the\nMPAcc program. Mulvey is now working in the financial services sector of PwC\u2019s\nAsset Wealth Management team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having recently moved to\nAtlanta and started with PwC, Mulvey looks forward to his career and an\nexciting future. Mulvey plans to join a tennis league and looks forward to\nmaking connections and meeting fellow professionals all while staying active\nand enjoying the new city.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Senior Lecturer Judson Jahn and Clinical Assistant Professor John Ledbetter guided 31 Clemson students on this summer\u2019s study abroad to Rome. Three courses were offered: legal environment of business, financial accounting concepts, and global business negotiation. Students completed the initial part of the courses online and finished the courses at the Pantheon Institute in Rome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Classes met on\nweekday mornings and early afternoons, leaving the remainder of students\u2019 time\nfor study, sightseeing, and group activities. Group activities included\norientation walking tours, an Italian culture and language crash course, a\nwalking tour of historically notable Roman attractions, an Italian cooking\nclass, and a rooftop pizza party. One day, class times were rescheduled to\nprovide students an opportunity to experience a Papal Audience in Vatican City.\nStudents also took a three day tour of Tuscany, visiting the cities of Pienza,\nOrvieto, and Montepulciano, which included a business tour of the Vecchia\nCantina di Montepulciano wine cellar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students\nenjoyed several professional development opportunities during their time\nabroad. Dean Wendy York accompanied students for part of the trip and delivered\na helpful and insightful presentation on dealing with stress. Clemson alum\nGiovanna di Bicarri, now an Italian TV and entertainment personality and\nentrepreneur, shared her experiences and suggestions for doing business in\nItaly. Students visited Cristo Re Hospital in Rome and learned about their\nunique business strategy for serving the tourism and study abroad markets.\nDuring their time in Tuscany, students also heard suggestions on career\nplanning and development from Andora Fess, Clemson alumna and current graduate\nstudent at the London School of Economics (and Dean York\u2019s daughter).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students\ndeveloped several useful life skills over the course of the Rome study abroad,\nin addition to learning important law, accounting, and negotiation concepts.\nThey arranged and negotiated individual travel to and from Rome, demonstrated\ndaily living skills (including shopping, cooking, and cleaning) in a foreign\ncountry with an unfamiliar language, and developed an appreciation for Italian\nculture and business customs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Student Lillian Holder was one of the students who participated in\nthis summer\u2019s study abroad in Rome. Holder praised the guidance of Jahn and\nLedbetter who went beyond teaching in the classroom to show the students a\ncomprehensive view of Italy and international business while also encouraging\nstudents to navigate life in a foreign country. Holder also appreciated the\nvisit from Dean York. She recalls the unique opportunity to get to know Dean\nYork and gain new perspectives from her. Holder particularly enjoyed Dean York\u2019s\ndiscussions regarding stress management in life and leadership.\u00a0Upon finishing the program, Holder was\npleased to have built relationships with students from multiple different\nbackgrounds and majors. Holder reflects that \u201cexperiencing life in Italy for a\nmonth was a privilege that I will treasure for the rest of my life. I am\nthankful that I took the leap to study through the Pam Hendrix Center for\nEducation Abroad at Clemson!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Spring 2024, Associate Professor Kathryn\nKisska-Schulze launched a new sports law course. The course examines legal\nissues applicable to U.S. amateur and professional sports. It provides students\na better understanding of the interconnected relationship between sports and\nthe law across three distinct areas: high school, intercollegiate and\nprofessional sports. Students are introduced to and analyze numerous current\nand historic U.S. court decisions that have impacted an array of sports-related\nparties, including athletes, teams, sports leagues, governing bodies, agents\nand third-party businesses. Legal topics that are explored in great detail\ninclude contract law, antitrust and labor law, gender and racial equity in\nsports, intellectual property rights, constitutional law and tort law. Due to\nthe magnitude of students interested in taking this course, Kisska-Schulze will\noffer two sections of the class in Spring 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To enhance students\u2019 overall learning experience\nbeyond the textbook and cases covered, Kisska-Schulze invited two speakers this\npast spring to discuss relevant legal issues in amateur sports. The first speaker\nwas Coach Tommy Bell, Athletic Director (AD) at T. L. Hanna High School in\nAnderson, South Carolina. Prior to serving as the AD at T. L. Hanna, Bell\nworked as the AD at Hillcrest High School in Simpsonville, South Carolina for\n13 years. Bell was also the head coach of the Hillcrest wrestling team for nine\nyears, leading the team to eight region championships, seven appearances in the\nstate dual semi-finals, two dual team state championships and two traditional\ntournament state championship titles. Bell was named Region Athletic Director of\nthe Year four times and was the 2019 South Carolina Athletic Administrators Association\nstatewide Athletic Director of the Year.\u00a0His classroom discussion focused\non relevant legal issues currently impacting high school sports, including\ngender equity and name, image and likeness rights. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stephanie Ellison-Johnson also spoke to the\nclass. Ellison-Johnson is the Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director for\nSports Administration\/Senior Woman Administrator at Clemson. In this capacity,\nshe oversees the daily operations for four of Clemson\u2019s now 21 sports (women\u2019s\nbasketball, gymnastics, lacrosse and rowing), and the department\u2019s\nstudent-athlete development area. She also manages the Athletic Department\u2019s\nTitle IX compliance for gender equity and represents Clemson Athletics as a\nmember of the Atlantic Coast Conference governance group. Her classroom discussion\nfocused on the impact of Title IX in collegiate D-1 sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the direction of Clinical Associate Professor Phebe\nDavis-Culler, the School of Accountancy and the College of Business hosted the\nfirst National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) Accounting Career\nAwareness Program (ACAP) at Clemson. With the help of Helen Diamond-Steele, the\nDirector of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging, and in collaboration\nwith NABA, minority high school students participated in the ACAP from July 21\nthrough July 26. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program selected 30 attendees to stay on Clemson\u2019s\ncampus for the week to learn about careers in the field of accounting. While ACAP\nis a national program, Clemson\u2019s camp was the only\u00a0program in South\nCarolina. The interest in the camp exceeded the original planned capacity with\nalmost 60 applicants for the 30 available spots. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With financial support from the accounting advisory board, firm\nand individual sponsors\/donors, the Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of\nBusiness and the School of Accountancy, the camp was offered free of charge to\nthe students. The program was an opportunity to contribute to building a\npipeline of future accountants as well as market Clemson\u2019s accounting program\nto the next generation. Davis-Culler also saw this as an excellent opportunity\nto debunk the negative stereotypes associated with accountants and accounting\nas a career option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the program, students participated in workshops, learning sessions and a capstone group project. Accounting faculty volunteers Lecturer Paul Bonney, Lecturer Craig Hawkins, Assistant Professor Erin Hawkins and advisory board member Angie Pulley assisted with the program by leading topical sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Davis-Culler, this summer\u2019s program was the fulfillment\nof a dream she has held for the department since starting at Clemson in 2017.\nThis summer\u2019s program was a great success and an honor to watch come to\nfruition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In reviewing Whitney Lee\u2019s accolades and activities, it\u2019s hard not to wonder how she does it all! Originally from Jacksonville, Florida, Lee is a thriving scholar and a successful student athlete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally a finance major, Lee realized her appreciation for accounting\nas she began taking the accounting classes required by her original major. In\naddition to enjoying her accounting classes, Lee had previously worked for an\naccounting firm during her senior year of high school. As she reflected on the tasks\nshe was assigned during her internship, Lee decided that an accounting degree\nwas something she wanted to pursue. Lee changed her major to accounting with a minor\nin both finance and management information systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lee plans to graduate\nin May 2026 and is a flourishing scholar with many accolades to her name. Lee\nis a Clemson University Foundation Unrestricted Scholarship Endowment\nRecipient, a Thomas F. Chapman Leadership Scholar and a Doug Peacock Scholar. She\nhas also been part of the Community for Undergraduate Business Students, is a\nmember of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated and an active member in the\nMinority Business Student Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whitney Lee<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

In addition to\npursuing an accounting major and double minor, Lee is an athlete on the Clemson\nAll-Girl cheerleading team. The team practices year round, and during their\nbusiest season, they have practice or training five days a week. The team also cheers\nat football games, basketball games and gymnastics competitions, and although\nnot always in uniform, they support the majority of the university\u2019s sports.\nLee has cheered since she was three years old, and the discipline she has\ngained from the sport is reflected in her success today. For Lee, cheerleading is\nnot just a sport, but a reflection of her outlook on life. In her own words,\nLee explains that \u201cfor someone to truly understand the sport of cheer, it\nrequires them to understand what it means to have\u00a0grit, leadership, and an\nunwavering likeness to be a part of a team, and to love supporting your\norganization, school or university.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the summer\nof 2024, Lee worked as an intern with EY in their Atlanta office. During her\ninternship she learned the various career opportunities available to accountants\nand she gained a deeper appreciation of the dynamic nature of the world of\nbusiness. After completion of the internship, Lee recognized that her \u201cvoice is\nthe most crucial asset for achieving success in a professional career.\u201d Upon\ngraduation in May 2026, Lee plans to take the CPA exam. Based on her\nexperiences during her internship, she hopes to begin her career in asset\nwealth management. A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Riley Dowling moved to Greenville, South Carolina in 5th<\/sup> grade where she attended Southside Christian through her graduation in 2020. Dowling enjoyed a family-based childhood and feels blessed to call Charlotte and Greenville home. Dowling comes from a Clemson family \u2014 both parents as well as her sister and brother-in-law are Clemson graduates, and her younger brother currently attends Clemson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dowling recalls the emphasis her parents placed on service to Clemson while growing up, and this is certainly a character trait that Dowling embodies today. Not only is she an excellent student, but Dowling was also active in the Clemson community throughout her time in school. While at Clemson, Dowling supported Alpha Delta Pi as the vice president of finance and served the Blue Key Honor Society as treasurer. Dowling also enjoyed her time as a Tour Guide with the Clemson University Guide Association and was an active member in the Student Alumni Council, where she was able to serve in her favorite role as ring director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dowling\nreflects on her position of Ring Director as the most exciting service role\nwhile at Clemson. Dowling confesses that although it was technically a service activity,\nshe found it so rewarding that it felt more like an honor than a commitment. In\nher own words, the roll of Ring Director allowed Dowling the joy \u201cto watch\nthousands of students receive a tangible item that connects Clemson\u2019s stories,\nunites shared experiences, and represents hard work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dowling built an impressive resume before\ngraduating. She was honored to be part of the Tiger Brotherhood and the Order\nof Omega Honor Society.\u00a0 She also earned\nthe Life Scholarship, the Bill and Linda Stevens Annual Scholarship and the South\nCarolina Bankers Association Palmetto Student Scholarship. Dowling worked as an\nintern with Southern First Bank in 2022 and with Elliott Davis in 2023.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dowling graduated from Clemson in May\n2024 with a bachelor\u2019s in accounting and a minor in finance and completed an\ninternship with Deloitte during the summer of 2024. She looks forward to\ncontinuing her education with a graduate degree and aspires to earn her CPA\nlicense. Madison Monroe grew up in\nGreenville, South Carolina and was attracted to Clemson by its \u201cwelcoming and\nfamilial atmosphere.\u201d Although she started out as a math major, Monroe was curious\nabout accounting and enrolled in an accounting class. She immediately \u201cfelt\nthat accounting was the thing [her] brain was designed to do\u201d and has since become\n\u201cmore and more excited\u201d about a career in the profession. During the summer of\nher sophomore year, Monroe interned at a small firm in Duncan, S.C. that manages\nfranchise restaurants in the upstate. This internship helped Monroe prepare for\nher upcoming internship at CURO Financial Technologies in Greenville, S.C. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite switching to the accounting program in her sophomore\nyear, Monroe has been able to stay on track to graduate with an accounting\ndegree in four years while also earning a math minor. The two classes that have\nstood out to Monroe the most during her time at Clemson are intermediate financial\naccounting II, taught by Terry Knause, and accounting information systems,\ntaught by Phil Maiberger. These\ntwo classes allowed Monroe\nto better understand the linkages between her coursework and accounting in\npractice. Attesting to her hard work, Monroe was\nrecently nominated for and awarded a $10,000 scholarship from the PCAOB\nScholars Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Monroe has used\nher time at Clemson to develop professional skills and interpersonal connections\nwith her classmates and future employers that will serve her well in her future\ncareer as an auditor, she also has used her time to be active in extra-curricular\nactivities. Despite arriving at Clemson during the height of the COVID-19\npandemic, Monroe has actively participated in intramural flag football and\nkickball. She has also volunteered with Solid Green by handing out recycling\nbags at football games, which reflects her passion for sustainability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although she never wanted\nto pursue a master\u2019s degree, she is attracted to the Master of Professional\nAccountancy (MPAcc) program because it would allow her to continue her\nprofessional development through coursework while also preparing her for the\nCPA exam. Madison will\ntake two master-level courses in the spring of her senior year and complete the\nMPAcc program in Greenville, S.C. after graduating with her undergraduate\ndegree in May of 2024. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Tia\nStreiffert grew up in Wasilla, Alaska and joined the Air Force where she worked\nas a news\/radio broadcaster. After completing her enlistment, Streiffert attended\nHorry-Georgetown Technical College where she immediately fell in love with\naccounting. She subsequently transferred to Clemson as an accounting major, in\npart, because her future spouse was a Clemson alumnus, who showed her around\ncampus and took her on a walk through Presidential Park. After completing her\nundergraduate degree, she worked for BDO in Anchorage and then applied and was\naccepted in Clemson\u2019s Master of Professional Accountancy (MPAcc) program. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Streiffert\nreturned to the Upstate and chose the audit track of the MPAcc program because of\nthe positive experience she had in her undergraduate auditing class. She enjoyed the class and found it \u201cfascinating to pull away from the\nblack and white idea of what accounting was and look more at the \u2018grey\u2019 area of\naccounting \u2013 the parts that require judgement and professional skepticism.\u201d While\nenrolled in the MPAcc program, she passed several sections of the CPA exam,\nworked as an intern at BDO, and got married. Tia highly recommends the MPAcc program\nbecause \u201cthe professors care a lot about student success, the building is in a\ngreat location and the program is really great at preparing you for a career in\npublic accounting. The built in CPA study is an amazing resource as well.\u201d\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Streiffert\nhas made the most of her time at Clemson. Her undergraduate and graduate\nexperiences have equipped her with the necessary technical and soft skills needed\nto be an effective auditor. She has also been active in extra-curricular\nactivities while at Clemson. As an undergraduate,\nshe was the treasurer and president of the Clemson Student Veteran\u2019s\nAssociation, the treasurer for the Salute Veteran\u2019s Honor Society, and\nmember\/historian for Gamma Sigma Sigma, a service sorority on campus. Senior\nlecturer Scott Toussaint and assistant clinical professor John Ledbetter guided\n31 Clemson students on this summer\u2019s study abroad to Rome. Three courses were\noffered including legal environment of business, financial accounting concepts\nand international business law. Students completed the initial part of the\ncourses online and finished the courses at the Pantheon Institute in Rome. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Classes\nmet on weekday mornings, leaving students the afternoons for study,\nsightseeing, and group activities. Group activities included orientation\nwalking tours, an Italian culture and language crash course, a walking tour of\nhistorically notable Roman attractions, an Italian cooking class, and a rooftop\npizza party. Rinascente (an upscale Italian retailer) hosted the students to a\nbusiness tour of their Rome store and shared insights into their marketing and\nmerchandising strategies. Students also took a three-day tour of Tuscany,\nvisiting the cities of Orvieto and Montepulciano, and a business tour of the Vecchia\nCantina di Montepulciano winery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students\ndeveloped several useful skills over the course of the Rome study abroad. In\naddition to learning important law and accounting concepts, they arranged and\nnegotiated individual travel to and from Rome, demonstrated daily living skills\n(including shopping, cooking, and cleaning) in a foreign country with an\nunfamiliar language, and developed an appreciation for Italian culture and\nbusiness customs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Family,\nfriends, and the Clemson University community mourned the loss of Brian Carver\non September 19, 2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\nis impossible to truly honor a life well lived in a single article, but it is\npossible to highlight a few of the things that so many people loved about our\ndear friend Brian Carver. In attempting to gather a few words about Carver, the\nsame sentiments were constantly repeated \u2013 his love and commitment to others!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carver\nearned his bachelor and master degrees from the University of Tennessee. After\nearning these, Carver went on to work in manufacturing. After 9 years, he returned\nto the University of Tennessee where he pursued his CPA and Ph.D. Carver served\ntwo visiting teaching positions before becoming an assistant professor at\nMississippi State. Carver joined the Clemson School of Accountancy in 2014 and\nserved as a treasured member of the faculty until his passing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carver\u2019s wife Dede shared that his faith and family were\nforemost in his life. He loved to watch all sports, and his love for others\nspurred him to teach about his faith by participating in two mission trips to\nJamaica. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the many memories and sentiments shared about Carver,\nhis kindness and service to others were resounding themes. Friends remember his\npassion in all the things he did for others; whether he was taking charge of\nthe music for a wedding day, or preparing his firstborn\u2019s nursery! Another\nfriend remembered that even when on the way home from one of his mission trips\nto Jamaica, Carver\u2019s service to others didn\u2019t stop when they left the island. When\none friend was too exhausted from the trip to keep up with the group, it was\n(unsurprisingly) Carver who stopped and waited to help them continue on!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To honor his dad, Carver\u2019s son Matthew partnered with the\nOmega Chi social club at Freed-Hardeman University to set up the \u201cBrian Carver\nMissions Fund.\u201d Matthew Carver shared that his dad\u2019s passion for others was\nsomething special that he saw first-hand as they participated in mission trips\ntogether.He remembers one of his last conversations with his dad being about\nreaching the local community with his faith. The fund set up in Carver\u2019s honor\nwill be used to send underprivileged Freed-Hardeman students on future mission\ntrips. Matthew Carver shared that he knows his father would be touched that a\nfund was created in his memory for the sole purpose of reaching people and\ncontinuing to share his love for others and his faith. The fund exceeded its\ninitial goal of raising $1,500 dollars and will remain open for future giving. The\nfund was first used on a Freed-Hardeman trip to Ecuador in spring of 2023 and\nwill continue to support the Omega Chi club\u2019s mission going forward!\n\nCarver\u2019s passing certainly left a hole in our community,\nbut his kindness and love for others left a legacy that will continue for many\nyears to come. In honor of Brian Carver and two other faculty who recently\npassed, the School of Accountancy held a memorial service in September 2023. A\nnew memorial bench as well as memorial plaques will honor Brian Carver, Daryl\nGuffey and Megan Mowrey.\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
