When he arrived at Clemson, he knew he wanted a career involving numbers, but it was his first accounting course that solidified his path.

Today, Mathis serves as president of Founders Federal Credit Union, one of the region’s largest and fastest-growing credit unions. Mathis credits professors including Suzy Pearse and Tom Dickens with making a lasting impact, not only through their teaching, but through the personal investment they made in students’ success. He also benefited from Clemson’s connections to the accounting profession, securing internships during his sophomore, junior and senior years that gave him valuable exposure and helped him identify his long-term interests.

One of those early opportunities proved especially significant. After his sophomore year, Mathis interned at Founders Federal Credit Union under longtime CFO Tony Gilreath. Gilreath encouraged him to pursue his CPA license and begin his career in public accounting before eventually returning to industry. Mathis followed that advice, joining Elliott Davis after graduation and specializing in community bank audits within the firm’s Financial Services Group. Along the way, he was mentored by several Clemson alumni who helped open doors and deepen his understanding of the industry.

In 2019 Mathis reconnected with Gilreath over lunch. That conversation led to an opportunity to return to Founders as a senior financial analyst, a decision Mathis now describes as one of the most important turning points of his career. Over the following years, he advanced through leadership roles in finance and accounting before being named president in 2026.

As president, Mathis works closely with the credit union’s leadership team and board of directors to guide organizational strategy and support nearly 300,000 members. He believes his accounting background continues to play a critical role in leadership and decision-making.

“Having an accounting background in the business world is a huge advantage,” Mathis said. “The ability to understand strategic decisions and their impact on financial results is highly beneficial to an organization’s success.”

Mathis emphasizes communication as one of the most important skills for young professionals entering accounting and finance. Early in his career at Founders, mentors intentionally placed him in situations where he presented to leadership teams and boards of directors, experiences that strengthened his confidence and communication abilities.

Looking ahead, Mathis is energized by the future of financial services, particularly the impact of technology and artificial intelligence on the banking industry. Under his leadership, Founders continues investing in digital innovation and branch expansion to meet members wherever they prefer to do business.

Outside of work, Mathis remains active in his community through Mercy Church, the Anne Springs Close Greenway Board of Managers, the Levine Children’s Hospital Board of Ambassadors and the Lancaster Breakfast Rotary Club. He also recently joined Clemson’s advisory board. He and his wife, Lauren, his former Clemson accounting study partner, live in the Charlotte area with their two children, Drew and Annie.

Reflecting on his journey, Mathis says the most rewarding aspect of his career has been seeing the impact Founders has on the lives of its members and working alongside a team committed to service and growth. Drawn to Clemson’s highly regarded Master of Professional Accountancy (MPAcc) program and the convenience of its Greenville location, Johnson found far more than an advanced accounting education. Originally from Tuxedo, North Carolina, she credits Clemson with opening doors that shaped the course of her career.

Johnson points to several experiences in the MPAcc program that had a lasting impact. Dr. Dickens’ tax research course sparked her interest in taxation and ultimately guided her toward a career in tax practice. She also benefited greatly from connections built through networking opportunities like Meet the Firms events, which she encourages students to fully embrace.

Johnson’s Clemson connections proved invaluable over her career and personal life. In fact, two classmates introduced Johnson to what was then Crisp Hughes Evans, where she launched her public accounting career. One of those classmates also introduced her to her future husband, and at a Meet the Firms event, she met Clemson alumnus Mike Crawford, who hired her into the firm’s Asheville office after graduation and became an influential mentor.

Interestingly, Johnson did not originally plan to become an accountant. After focusing on mathematics as an undergraduate, she explored accounting and quickly realized it was a natural fit. Today, she appreciates the profession’s variety and constant challenges.

“Every client and every situation is different,” Johnson said. “I truly enjoy helping clients achieve their goals and navigate complex challenges.”

Now a partner at Forvis Mazars, Johnson finds helping clients navigate complex tax issues especially rewarding. She also takes great pride in mentoring younger professionals and watching them reach significant career milestones, including becoming partners themselves.

Johnson believes success in the profession requires continuous learning, adaptability and strong relationships. One piece of advice from a mentor has stayed with her throughout her career: “Even though you’re young in your career today, your peers will be the decision-makers tomorrow.”

She encourages students and young professionals to invest in relationships and maintain those connections throughout their careers. Today’s classmates may become tomorrow’s clients, business leaders or trusted advisors. That philosophy also guides her approach to mentoring. She often brings associates to client meetings so they can observe firsthand how successful client relationships are built and maintained.

Johnson remains actively involved with Clemson through her service on the School of Accountancy Advisory Board. She values the opportunity to stay connected with students and faculty while helping prepare graduates for the evolving demands of the profession.

“The Clemson graduates we hire consistently arrive well prepared for their careers,” she said. “What impresses me most is the dedication of the faculty. They genuinely care about student success and are continually looking for ways to improve and strengthen the program.”

Among her proudest accomplishments, Johnson cites earning partnership after years of hard work and perseverance. On a personal level, she is especially proud that her son, Carson Johnson, is following in her footsteps as an accounting major at Clemson University.

Outside of work, Johnson enjoys spending time with family, helping operate her family’s cattle farm in Belton, South Carolina, and cheering on the Tigers in Death Valley.

When asked what message she would like to share with Clemson students, faculty and alumni, Johnson offered a lesson she often shares with her own children: “If it were easy, everyone would be doing it.”

For Johnson, success is built through hard work, perseverance and resilience.
