Never linger in the middle kick zone where a back leg can hit you with full force. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Bites\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Many animals will bite when frightened, restrained incorrectly, or if they feel threatened.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Being Crushed or Pinned\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Large animals can accidentally pin handlers against fences, gates, trailers, or equipment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When working around livestock, always make sure that you have an escape plan!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Charging and Aggressive Behavior\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Protective mothers, breeding males, and stressed animals may become aggressive with little warning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Always have an understanding of where livestock are if you are in the enclosure with them. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Understanding Animal Behavior<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Understanding an animal&#8217;s body language can help prevent a dangerous situation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Watch for signs such as:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Raised head and focused attention<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pinned ears<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pawing the ground<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tail swishing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Loud vocalizations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stiff body posture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Attempts to escape or turn away<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Animals that appear nervous or agitated should be handled calmly and given adequate space!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Personal Protective Equipment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Dress appropriately for the task and avoid loose clothing that could become caught on gates, fences, or equipment.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Leather work boots with slip-resistant soles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Long pants<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Gloves when handling livestock or equipment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Safety glasses when needed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Safe Livestock Handling Practices<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Always remain calm and avoid sudden movements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Never yell or strike animals unnecessarily.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Approach animals from the side where they can see you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Be aware of an animal&#8217;s blind spots.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Use proper handling equipment such as sorting panels, chutes, and head gates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Keep escape routes available whenever working in confined spaces. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Youth Safety Around Livestock<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Youth should always be supervised when working around livestock.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Make sure that children learn safe handling techniques before entering pens. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Youth should never enter pens with aggressive animals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Avoid standing behind livestock.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Understand that livestock are farm animals, not pets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Teaching safe habits early helps build confidence and prevents injuries!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Animal Safety Livestock production makes up about 64% of agricultural products sold in South Carolina, making livestock a vital part of many agricultural operations. While these storage facilities are important, if the proper safety precautions are not taken, they can become extremely dangerous to anyone who enters the bin. A person can become entrapped in grain in a matter of seconds, roughly 5 to 8 seconds. A person can become completely submerged in grain in about 22 seconds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Grain Bridging\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Grain that has spoiled or become crusted may appear solid on the surface while leaving an empty space underneath. Walking on a grain bridge can cause it to collapse, resulting in engulfment or becoming submerged in the grain. To prevent this, make sure you are adequately drying your grain to prevent excess moisture from creating moldy, crusty grain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Grain Walls\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Removing spoiled grain from the side of a bin can cause large amounts of grain to collapse suddenly. If you must remove grain from the side of the bin, start at the top and work your way to the bottom. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Hazardous Atmosphere\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Grain bins may contain low oxygen levels, toxic gases, or combustible dust that can create serious respiratory hazards or explosion risks. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Never Enter a Grain Bin Unless Absolutely Necessary<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Before entering any grain storage structure:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lockout and tagout all unloading and loading equipment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shut off augers and conveyors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Test the air for oxygen deficiency and hazardous gases. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wear a properly fitted full-body harness attached to a secure lifeline. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have at least two trained attendants with you. One should be on top of the bin with eyes on you, and the other should be on the ground to create a line of communication. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Always remember, no one should ever enter a grain bin when grain is flowing!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Safe Grain Handling Practices<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Inspect bins regularly for spoiled or crusted grain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Keep ladders, platforms, and walkways in good condition.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Clean grain dust to reduce fire and explosion hazards.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Never allow children to play in or around grain bins or equipment. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Regularly review emergency procedures and safety protocols for grain storage areas. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Equipment Safety Around Grain<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Grain handling equipment contains numerous moving parts that can cause severe injuries or even death\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Always keep guards in place.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Shut off equipment before clearing jams or debris.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Follow lockout\/tagout procedures before servicing machinery.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Stay clear of rotating PTO shafts, augers, belts, and chains. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Emergency Preparedness<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Every farm should have an emergency action plan that includes:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Emergency contact numbers posted near grain facilities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clearly marked bin identification for emergency responders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Workers trained to recognize hazards and respond safely. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Never attempt a rescue alone.
