B-Note May 12, 2016

May 12, 2016

Greetings fellow Tigers!

May 7 was an amazing day for our 2016 graduating class, as they took that short walk across the stage into a future filled with hope and possibility. Watch video recap and see photos from Saturday’s ceremony.  And if the event wasn’t special enough on its own, take a moment to watch this video of one graduate’s surprise guest!

GE Chairman and CEO Jeff Immelt gave an inspiring commencement address, and received an honorary Doctorate of Humanities from Clemson. Read more details on the graduation ceremonies, and see the video of Immelt’s address here.

On Friday, GE CEO Jeff Immelt brought a group from GE with him to visit campus. The GE team was excited to take a tour of our beautiful new Watt Family Innovation Center. See photos here.

We are pleased to share that Cardiologist Waenard L. Miller and his wife, Sheila, of Frisco, Texas, have given $2 million to the University to establish the Dr. Waenard L. Miller, Jr. ’69 and Sheila M. Miller Endowed Chair in Medical Physics. Miller earned his physics degree from Clemson in 1969 and the couple grew up in Greenville.  Read more about the Miller’s gift. View video and see photos from the announcement luncheon.

Were you aware that a beautiful piece of South Carolina Lowcountry history resides here at Clemson? Hanover House, built in 1716, is an early French Huguenot colonial design listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and has been housed in the South Carolina Botanical Gardens since 1994. There will be a 300th birthday celebration of Hanover House with a public symposium featuring guest speakers from architecture and academics on Saturday May 21. If you are interested in attending, you can register here by May 18.

If you haven’t made your weekend plans, Artisphere is in Greenville May 13-15. Building on the success of last year’s Clemson STEAM tent, the Clemson STEAM Network is back in force, with more than a dozen hands-on, interactive exhibits. The first location – next to Grill Marks restaurant on Main Street – will house a wide array of interactive exhibits created by Clemson faculty and students. At the second location – almost directly in front of the Clemson STEAM tent – visual arts students will demonstrate the art-making processes of ceramics and photography. Read here for more details.

B-Joyful!
During last weekend’s graduation ceremony, Jeff Immelt told the graduating class, “May the happiness you found at Clemson be just a glimpse of all the joy to come.” What a wonderful blessing for all of us who love this place, and share the joy of being a part of the Clemson family.

Congratulations graduates and Go Tigers!
