Family truly lives and breathes here

October 25, 2018

Dean Wendy York

Since hitting the ground running in mid-August, I’ve had the good fortune to meet with many welcoming Clemson alumni. My first impression: Family truly lives and breathes here.

I had the great pleasure to meet alumni this month from Atlanta to Washington D.C. and New York City, and even right here on campus during Homecoming weekend. As I’ve listened and learned from faculty, students, alumni and many others in the Clemson Family, I’ve become more energized and enthused than ever about the potential we have to put business education at Clemson on the map.

Another benefit of those interactions has been the many incredible stories we have to tell about this special place. From alums giving back to the university in many ways, to the accomplishments of students and faculty, there is plenty for us to tell the world about.

The Exchange Monthly is one of the vehicles we utilize to tell those stories. This month, you’ll read about Aleda Roth, the Burlington Industries Distinguished Professor of Supply Chain Management, who has spent more than a decade picking apart the long, global supply chains that deliver us the food we eat. Erin Powell, assistant professor of management, whose research shows the importance of empathy in successful group discussions. And, economics Professor Howard Bodenhorn, who had a cadre of students behind him in receiving a national economics history award.

I want to extend a special thank you to Board of Trustees member Cheri Phyfer, a 1993 and 1999 graduate of the College of Business and her husband Ben. They gave an Academic Cornerstone gift of $2.5 million toward our new building, the MBA program at Greenville ONE, and student scholarships. This tremendous gift from the Phyfer family is a testament to the culture of generosity that exists here at Clemson.

2018 Alumni Homecoming Tailgate

October marks the one-year anniversary of the groundbreaking for the College of Business’ new state-of-the-art home at the heart of campus. See the time-lapse video showing its progress, or watch our live feed. And, let’s not forget Military Appreciation Week coming up on Nov. 13-17. Our Army and Air Force ROTC programs will be involved in a number of activities that pay homage to current and former veterans, and of course those who made the supreme sacrifice for our country. Earlier this month I was enormously proud to be a part of a rare and remarkable ceremony honoring three Clemson alumni veterans who were prisoners of war from World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

These are just a few of the many transformational stories we have to tell about the College of Business. As we begin to take business education at Clemson to the national stage, there will be plenty more to tell.

Enjoy. And, Go Tigers!
