She founded a database marketing company and sold it to a national advertising agency. Eventually, she moved into venture capital, managing a private portfolio valued at $100 million.

She says that across her many jobs she has had “six distinct careers” but her skill set remains consistent. “What I usually bring to the situation is the ability to see a way to get to where they want to go, or to create a new process and to build the teams around it,” Ms. York says. “I’m very much a general manager.”

In 2008, she found herself without a job after the tech company where she was working downsized. Exit package in hand and in her early 50s, Ms. York paused to take stock. She had always balanced work and parenthood: While pregnant with triplets and on bed rest, she managed the sale of a company over the phone. But now her older daughter was in high school and her triplets were in third grade. “I realized that time was going to fly by,” she says.

She volunteered at her younger daughters’ school, treating the responsibility like a part-time job, until they were in fifth grade. The experience transformed her professional outlook.

“It was the first time in my adult life I had seen how much of an impact I could make that was measured in non-monetary means,” Ms. York says.

She began exploring a shift to nonprofit management, but earning money was still essential. As her savings dwindled and she interviewed for jobs, she repeatedly heard that she was overqualified. She applied for unemployment benefits for the first time.

In 2012, she spotted an opening for a managing director to oversee executive education at Stanford Business School and saw a chance to use her experience as a springboard into higher education. She took a $100,000 pay cut from her most recent tech job and began work two weeks before her children’s health insurance ran out.

“Those are the times you put your big-girl shoes on, you put your pride in your purse and you get to work,” she says.

In six and a half years at Stanford, she led a reorganization of several parts of the business school and built an enterprise linking faculty members with programmers who do statistical legwork for their academic research. Occasionally, she was contacted about jobs at other universities but she didn’t want to make her children switch schools. Also, none of the positions were enough to lure her away from Stanford’s employee tuition assistance program as her triplets approached college.

However, in the spring of 2018, a recruiter called about becoming dean of the business school at Clemson University in South Carolina. Ms. York was intrigued—and the timing seemed right.

Her younger daughters were headed to college that fall, at schools closer to Clemson than San Francisco. Her offer letter was dated May 22—her triplets’ birthdays. She took that as a sign. In 2018, after more than 20 years in the Bay Area, she packed up and moved to South Carolina.

Bringing in a nonacademic to lead the business school was a risk for Clemson, says Ms. York, who is also the first woman to hold the role. “They were brave to make that choice,” she says.

After years of helping organizations envision the future, Ms. York says she has identified the key to navigating her own. “Knowing that I can make a difference is critically important to me,” she says. “If I’m not making a difference in something, it’s time for me to find the next thing.

Reboot Update

Name: Wendy York

Age: 62

Location: Clemson, S.C.

Education: B.A., Stanford University; M.B.A., Harvard Business School

Former Job: Executive at early-stage internet and tech companies; venture capital

New Job: Dean, College of Business at Clemson University

Aha moment: Volunteering at her daughters’ school

Most important piece of advice for changing jobs: “Pivot is one of my favorite words….It’s this ability to assess the situation and see what options you do or don’t have, and then pivot to the next opportunity.”

Write to Kathryn Dill at Kathryn.Dill@wsj.com

Copyright ©2020 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. I recognize you all have disappointments over cancellation or postponement of events, trips, competitions, ceremonies and large celebrations you had planned for this semester. You miss gathering with your friends and playing on the sports fields, hanging out at meals and even studying together. I, too, am adjusting to a new way of being at the College of Business. I’m missing speaking with your students’ groups, Dinners with the Dean, giving many of you hugs when we meet or high fiving over your latest accomplishments. These days challenge us and test our resiliency to look adversity in the eye and move forward. I ask you to be fully committed to putting forth the effort it will take to finish the semester strong.

The Clemson Family has had a reputation for taking care of its own for more than 100 years. No matter where you find yourself, local or elsewhere, we will find solutions to ensure the continuation and successful completion of your course work this semester.

Thank you for your flexibility as we work through extraordinary circumstances. And those of us in the College of Business had plenty to be thankful for this month as we expressed appreciation for and celebrated the accomplishments by many within our family.

The university’s rich military history didn’t go unrecognized by the College of Business on Military Appreciation Day as we paid tribute to the brave men and women who defend our freedom.

I had the privilege of meeting a number of them at the Clemson Corps’ Military Appreciation Tailgate on Nov. 17. In addition to our proud Air Force and Army ROTC programs, and their many supporters, several highly decorated current and retired, high-ranking military officers were in attendance.

I was humbled and honored to meet our brave men and women who have served, are serving and of course, our cadets, who are beginning their service.

As dean of the business school, November was also a month for me to appreciate the many accomplishments of our students and faculty. And, in this month’s Monthly Exchange we duly recognize a number of those achievements.

The School of Accountancy, led by chair Sally Widener and the research prowess of Derek Dalton and Nancy Harp, was ranked 50th worldwide in academic research. The ranking, by Brigham Young University, showed just seven years ago, we ranked 275th worldwide in that same study. It certainly speaks to the caliber of educators we put in front of our accountancy classrooms. Worth noting, we are among only a few in the world’s top 50 that doesn’t offer a doctorate in accounting.

Mary Anne Raymond, professor of marketing, was accorded an international marketing association’s highest teaching award. The Society for Marketing Advances bestowed Mary Anne with its coveted Axcess-Capon Distinguished Teaching Award. She is the first professor to win the award as a first-time nominee.

And, our marketing students, under the direction of faculty Jennifer Siemens and Anastasia Thyroff, also played a significant role at that event. Students presenting their Creative Inquiry research projects to conference attendees included Helen McDowell, Bailey Hack, Tanner Parsons, Hannah Maisel, Madison Allen, Lauren Stabler and Melissa Nenninger.

Our MBA program exposes students to real-world learning opportunities at every juncture in their learning process. Twenty-one of those students benefited from an international negotiation workshop that was orchestrated by faculty member Judson Jahn. Judson arranged for students to bargain with their counterparts from the ISEG School of Management. We have a relationship with IESEG through our international dual-degree program.

Another group of MBA students finished second in an international cybersecurity competition at North Carolina State University. Nadeen Qubti, Carissa Robinson, Jamilah Abdi and Jillian Gaskins were second of eight teams challenged with solving a pharmaceutical company’s cybersecurity issue. Two great examples of how our MBA program is arming students with real-world learning experiences from the classroom.

As we spread the word of achievements like these, more people are realizing and acknowledging the caliber of business education that Clemson University delivers.

Wendy York
Dean, College of Business

November is a month many associate with thankfulness. As I’ve listened and learned from faculty, students, alumni and many others in the Clemson Family, I’ve become more energized and enthused than ever about the potential we have to put business education at Clemson on the map.

Another benefit of those interactions has been the many incredible stories we have to tell about this special place. From alums giving back to the university in many ways, to the accomplishments of students and faculty, there is plenty for us to tell the world about.

The Exchange Monthly is one of the vehicles we utilize to tell those stories. This month, you’ll read about Aleda Roth, the Burlington Industries Distinguished Professor of Supply Chain Management, who has spent more than a decade picking apart the long, global supply chains that deliver us the food we eat. Erin Powell, assistant professor of management, whose research shows the importance of empathy in successful group discussions. And, economics Professor Howard Bodenhorn, who had a cadre of students behind him in receiving a national economics history award.

I want to extend a special thank you to Board of Trustees member Cheri Phyfer, a 1993 and 1999 graduate of the College of Business and her husband Ben. They gave an Academic Cornerstone gift of $2.5 million toward our new building, the MBA program at Greenville ONE, and student scholarships. This tremendous gift from the Phyfer family is a testament to the culture of generosity that exists here at Clemson.

2018 Alumni Homecoming Tailgate

October marks the one-year anniversary of the groundbreaking for the College of Business’ new state-of-the-art home at the heart of campus. See the time-lapse video showing its progress, or watch our live feed. And, let’s not forget Military Appreciation Week coming up on Nov. 13-17.
