Dr. Quarles, now Senior Scientist and LC Automation Product Manager for Elemental Scientific, Inc. (ESI) received his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Clemson University under the supervision of Dr. Ken Marcus. His thesis work focused on a number of aspects of glow discharge spectroscopy. During his graduate career, he was a guest researcher at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory performing ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry experiments, as well as at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory where he used laser ablation sampling into the liquid sampling-atmospheric pressure glow discharge (LS-APGD) microplasma.
He subsequently had a post-doctoral fellowship with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, GA (2011-2013) as a chemist in the Inorganic and Radiation Analytical Toxicology Branch. Dr. Quarles is published in a variety of journals including, Analytical Chemistry, Metallomics, Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry, and Spectrochemica Acta, Part B. He contributes back to his profession through efforts with the Society for Applied Spectroscopy. Derrick, his wife Brynna (Ph.D. ’13), and their daughter Penelope live in Lawrenceville, GA.
