Stuart Whiteside awarded Distinguished Alumni Award

Stuart earned both his bachelor’s and Master of Science degrees in Civil Engineering from Clemson University. From the beginning, he exemplified the work ethic, innovation, and excellence that Clemson instills in its students. As a licensed Professional Engineer across four states, Stuart has spent his career shaping communities in meaningful and lasting ways.

As Principal-in-Charge of SeamonWhiteside, Stuart helped grow the firm into one of the Southeast’s premier civil engineering and landscape architecture companies. Guided by vision and technical expertise, he and his business partner, Kenny Seamon, reimagined site design and built a company that today employs over 300 professionals.

Beyond the firm, Stuart has played a key role in shaping the development landscape of the Charleston region and beyond. He is an established member of the Charleston Developer’s Council and has served on the Board and Executive Committee of the Charleston Regional Development Alliance. He was also named one of Charleston’s 50 Most Influential People for three consecutive years.

His work spans some of the Southeast’s most transformative projects, including CU-ICAR in Greenville, the Volvo Car Stadium in Charleston, Nexton Mixed-Use Community in Summerville, and the Larry B. Penley Clubhouse here at Clemson. Through every project, Stuart has blended engineering precision with thoughtful land planning, enhancing infrastructure, economies, and quality of life.

Stuart’s impact doesn’t stop with his projects. He’s a dedicated mentor, empowering the next generation of engineers and designers. His leadership extends into community service, from chairing the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce to supporting local schools and nonprofits.

He’s not just a builder of communities — he’s a builder of people, institutions, and futures.

Outside of work, Stuart is passionate about golf, spending time with family, and, of course, cheering on the Clemson Tigers. His love for Clemson runs deep, and he remains closely connected to the university that helped shape his path. Stuart is an active member of ABRED and seeks every opportunity to help Clemson interns, students, and graduates achieve their career goals by continuously reinforcing Clemson’s MRED vision to create great “place-makers”, not just builders of projects.

In every way, Stuart Whiteside embodies the excellence, innovation, and service that define Clemson’s engineering legacy. His career, leadership, and character make him truly deserving of this prestigious honor.

Congratulations, Stuart — and thank you for all you’ve built, led, and inspired.
