Our Origin: The Question That Started It All
Clemson’s Agricultural Economics Club, our predecessor, stopped its activities in 2011, at the same time when the Applied Economics and Statistics Curriculum was going through a turbulent period. Fast forward to the Summer of 2013, the Agribusiness major is introduced at Clemson. That fall, two undergraduate “refugees”, Victoria Rizer and Elizabeth McLeod, approached the reconstituted faculty and asked the question that started it all: “With the major revived, can we now resurrect the Agricultural Economics Club?”
A Student Club is (Re)born: The Founding Four
This was not a question with an easy answer, especially during the time of the establishment of a new major. However, Victoria and Elizabeth were determined to succeed. Thus, two weeks later, they organized the first meeting after two long years. Four faithful attended that first meeting: Victoria and Elizabeth, along with Larabeth Smith and Zachary Sharp. The first order of business for our founders? Establish a constitution, settle on a new name, and find a faculty advisor. Dr. Webb Smathers introduced a newly hired faculty member, Dr. Michael Vassalos, to the founders. Dr. Vassalos agreed to advise the newly formed club. At the end of that meeting a name was agreed upon: Clemson’s Agribusiness Association. A constitution was also drafted and the Clemson’s Agribusiness Association was born!
Looking Forward: Continuing to Grow and Succeed
The initial goal of the “founding four” was to meet as a group once a month and potentially participate in some Clemson University events. Today, Clemson’s Agribusiness Association has come a long way from these goals, and we constantly reach beyond our expectations. Not only our membership is constantly increasing, and we are meeting more and more often, but also we have traveled all across the U.S., and are consistently recognized by professional associations, and Clemson University for our achievements and activities. None of that would have been possible without the commitment, passion, and dedication of all of our members. Will you be part of our next successful chapter? Do not hesitate and contact us!
