Dominica (not to be confused with the Dominican Republic) is an island country in the Lesser Antilles, just south of Guadeloupe and just north of Martinique. Columbus encountered this island on his second voyage on 3 November 1493, a Sunday, and named it Dominica (Latin for Sunday). But this island paradise had already been settled by successive tribes, the latest ones being the Kalinagos, who still have territory there. Their name for their island is Waitukubuli which means: Tall is her body. And tall she is, the island was too rugged to land, and Columbus sailed on without finding a safe harbor there. Europeans did eventually land thus contributing to a rich, often tragic, history of conflict and colonization. If Columbus returned today, Dominica is the only island that he might say is most unchanged from the 15th Century. The rugged mountainous and densely forested interior is almost exactly as it was. This presentation will focus on the natural features of ‘The Nature Island of the Caribbean’ and some historical notes along with two recent eco-tours as well as dozens of study-abroad trips with Clemson students. Dr. Hains’ presentation will also outline the sad history of Clemson’s presence in Dominica, the past glory of ATREC and Springfield and will close with comments on its status. Dr. Hains hopes you will enjoy this virtual exploration of one of the most unspoiled and beautiful places on earth.
