Every year Clemson University invests thousands of dollars in Commissioning (Cx) on new construction and Retro-Commissioning (Retro-CX) on existing buildings.\u00a0 In addition to proper building performance, University Facilities’ Utility Services has realized extensive energy saving and cost benefits through our Cx efforts. \u00a0Similar studies conducted by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory<\/a> indicate Cx ensures that buildings meet and exceed performance and energy savings promised by their design.<\/p>\n

Cx efforts are important because commercial buildings frequently undergo operational and occupancy changes that challenge existing mechanical, electrical and controls systems, hindering optimal performance. Additionally, today\u2019s buildings are more complex with smart technologies. In many cases, small problems have big effects on performance. This is why new building Cx and Retro-Cx are very important processes of predictive and preventive maintenance. Commissioning improves a building\u2019s operations and maintenance (O&M) procedures to enhance overall building performance.<\/p>\n

New LEED standards<\/a> require every LEED building to be Re-Commissioned (ReCx) after 5 years in operation. During Cx, commissioning agents typically encompass a 20% sampling of a new building\u2019s automated systems.\u00a0 A year ago, Utility Services & Energy Management along with University Facilities’\u00a0Maintenance Services Department formed an internal commissioning team consisting of Matt Holbrooks, Steve Fisher and Scott Feagan as its\u00a0founding members.\u00a0\u00a0 To date, the team has completed Watt Innovation Center 100% Cx, Freeman Hall Addition 100% Cx and have substantially completed BRC and Godley-Snell Retro-Cx.<\/p>\n

When classes are canceled and campus is closed during a winter weather event, not everyone is home by the fire. University Facilities’ Landscape Services is tasked with making sure the campus roadways, sidewalks and steps are cleared of snow and ice as soon as possible after a winter storm has ended. This is done to ensure that the Clemson University Police Department<\/a>, Fire Department<\/a> and other emergency personnel are able to service the campus. It is also done to make sure that the students living on campus in residence halls are able to have safe passage to the dining halls for meals.<\/p>\n

To accomplish this task, Landscape\u00a0Services is equipped with various pieces of equipment that assist in the process of clearing snow and ice. This includes two large dump trucks with plow attachments and sand spreaders, tractors and mowers with brooms and push blades, as well as an inventory of shovels and push brooms for all the hand work that must be done. Landscape Services staff often work overtime to ensure that roads and pedestrian walkways are made accessible and safe to use.<\/p>\n

Long after the snow is gone, many turf areas are later repaired in the Spring as a result of recreational activities such as snow\u00a0sledding as well as vehicles leaving roadways (for fun or by accident). Landscape Services regularly levels and re-seeds grassy areas, which helps return the campus to its usual glory. \u00a0We also remove downed trees and limbs and repair roads due to\u00a0pot holes that tend to crop up during the colder months.<\/p>\n

Kinard Hall, named after Dr. Francis Marion Kinard, is one of the many buildings University Facilities cares for every day.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The Kinard Laboratory of Physics is a four story, 63,689 gross square foot facility in the heart of the Clemson Campus that honors the service of Francis Marion Kinard (1902\u20131960). Dean Kinard, a professor of English from 1924 until his sudden death in 1960, became dean of the School of Arts and Sciences in 1943 and then dean of the college in 1955. The new home to Clemson\u2019s Department of Physics, Kinard Laboratory of Physics, was dedicated to his memory and in honor of his service to Clemson in 1961.1 <\/sup>This facility houses the Department of Physics and Astronomy and contains six classrooms, 36 laboratory spaces and 69 offices.<\/p>\n

Today, University Facilities cares for Kinard with Custodians Lan Chen (5 years at Clemson) and new hire Leigh Hurst.\u00a0 Our Maintenance and Landscape Services staff spent over 1,225 hours last fiscal year in Kinard on preventive and corrective maintenance to the facility and ground\u2019s care.\u00a0 Among the many working routinely in Kinard are James McGee (4 years at Clemson), Michael Owens (5 years at Clemson) and Larry Kastner (11 years at Clemson).<\/p>\n

Recently, Project Manager John Gambrell (23 years at Clemson) directed renovations to the Foucault Pendulum Tower. The pendulum is the only Foucault pendulum on public display in South Carolina and has served as a central focal point of the facility since the installation in 1961.<\/p>\n

Our staff continue to leave their mark each day on this important University asset.<\/p>\n

A student in\u00a0Lightsey\u00a0Bridge apartments was recently bitten by a snake believed to be a copperhead<\/a>. The victim was treated and is recovering.<\/p>\n

There is no need for alarm, but it is a good time to remind you of some general information about snakes from\u00a0Clemson\u2019s\u00a0Department of Forestry and Environmental Conservation<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Most snakes in the Southeast are non-venomous and completely harmless. We have only two venomous species in the Upstate (copperheads\u00a0and timber rattlesnakes). There are several\u00a0guides\u00a0available<\/a> to help you tell the difference between venomous and non-venomous snakes.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

If you encounter a snake and do not know what species it is, you should not pick it up or interact with it. Many\u00a0snakebites\u00a0result from someone trying to move or harm a snake.<\/p>\n

When spending time in the woods or in places with rock piles, brush piles or stacked firewood, it\u2019s always a good idea to look where you are placing your hands and feet beforehand.<\/p>\n

If\u00a0you are bitten by a snake, stay calm and remember that most snakes are not venomous\u00a0and bites from venomous snakes in the U.S. are rarely fatal. If you believe the bite came from a venomous snake:<\/p>\n
