Whether she was mentoring new students, conducting research or balancing an incredibly full schedule across campus, Katie left a lasting impression on the Clemson community through both her leadership and enthusiasm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Katie says she truly loved and savored every moment of her undergraduate experience at Clemson. Establishing relationships with the people with whom you interact daily will be the most genuine and rewarding part of your Clemson experience and set you up for great success after graduation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One Clemson memory Katie says she will never forget is walking into Death Valley for the first time as a freshman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe sights, the sounds, the people&#8230; it was electrifying. Society<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;recently announced that&nbsp;<strong>Dr. Stephen Dolan<\/strong>&nbsp;and graduate student&nbsp;<strong>Shafi Mondal<\/strong>&nbsp;as&nbsp;the&nbsp;joint&nbsp;winners&nbsp;of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/microbiologysociety.org\/resource\/stephen-dolan-and-shafi-mondal-announced-as-the-2026-winners-of-the-tony-trinci-award.html\"><strong>2026&nbsp;Tony&nbsp;Trinci&nbsp;Award<\/strong><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/microbiologysociety.org\/grants-prizes\/all-prizes-and-competitions\/tony-trinci-award.html\"><strong>award<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;is given annually to a researcher deemed to be presenting the best mycological science at one of each Society\u2019s main scientific meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m&nbsp;very grateful&nbsp;to receive the Tony&nbsp;Trinci&nbsp;Award from the British Mycological Society and the Microbiology Society,\u201d says Dolan. \u201cIt is a real honor to be recognized in the name of Professor&nbsp;Trinci, whose work helped shape our understanding of fungal growth by linking underlying cellular processes to complex biological behavior.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shafi Mondal is currently pursuing a PhD in Stephen&nbsp;Dolan\u2019s lab&nbsp;where is research focuses on polymicrobial interactions involving the human pathogenic fungus&nbsp;Aspergillus fumigatus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn particular, I&nbsp;investigate how&nbsp;A. fumigatus\u202fremodels its transcriptional landscape in the presence of bacterial species commonly found in the cystic fibrosis lung, and how these changes contribute to tolerance against clinically and environmentally relevant stressors,\u201d says Mondal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mondal sees receiving the Trinci award as an encouraging step as he continues to develop as a researcher in mycology, hoping to improve understanding of fungal pathogens and the challenges they pose to human health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In mid-April Dolan and Mondal travelled to the UK to present their award presentations at Microbiology&nbsp;Society\u2019s&nbsp;annual conference. (based off of the New York Times game &#8216;Wordle&#8217;) was developed to aid students in learning the twenty common amino acids. built an outstanding research record across multiple labs, spending more than four years studying thermal adaptation, azole tolerance and gene expression in&nbsp;<em>Aspergillus fumigatus<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This award is given to a graduating senior who has performed outstanding original research in the sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 and women\u2019s studies, Katie Barfield has worked in Miriam Konkel\u2019s lab, participated in research at Johns Hopkins University and has conducted a greenhouse assay&nbsp;at the Institute of Subtropical and Mediterranean Horticulture in Malaga, Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Blue Key Academic and Leadership Award recognizes one student in each of the colleges at Clemson who has distinguished graduate studies, Che helped create a new research method that made it possible to study how certain molecules inside cells are controlled, leading to the identification of important pathways involved in how cells process nuclear RNA. He also discovered two human genes, which he named RMP24 and RMP64 and helped develop an&nbsp;<em>E.-coli<\/em>-free cloning method and a way to build much larger DNA libraries for genetic research. As grant officer, she led the coordination of SciSAB\u2019s grant in aid of research award program, applications increasing by 91%, and helping award $6,200 in funding. However, when asked what her favorites are, a few come to mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;When we made it to the Elite 8 last year in basketball. I prefer watching basketball over football (sorry). The consortium founding members include the <a href=\"https:\/\/www5.usp.br\/english\/institutional\/\">University of Sao Paulo (USP)<\/a> in Brazil, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ug.edu.gh\/about-ug\/overview\">University of Ghana<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.puce.edu.ec\/\">Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Ecuador<\/a> (PUCE), which complement and supplement the research done by EPIC\u2019s 24 faculty members, who represent three colleges and eight departments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clemson University senior double majoring in biochemistry and psychology <strong>Yashvi Patel <\/strong>spent the past summer at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/patient-visitor-guide\/florida\">Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida<\/a> completing a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.clemson.edu\/clemson-students-research-journey-spans-dna-repair-to-stroke-care\/\">clinical research internship focused on stroke treatment,<\/a> analyzing how soon patients can begin physical movement such as sitting on the edge of the bed, standing or walking after having a stroke and receiving a certain drug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aging leaves a chemical signature on DNA, statistical models known as epigenetic clocks estimating a person\u2019s age with relatively high accuracy. This new program brings together a group of first- and second-year Honors students to research, build and implement plans to address community needs or challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/microbiologysociety.org\/\">The Microbiology Society<\/a>, together with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britmycolsoc.org.uk\/\">British Mycological Society<\/a> recently announced that <strong>Dr. Stephen Dolan<\/strong>\u00a0and graduate student <strong>Shafi Mondal<\/strong> as\u00a0the\u00a0joint\u00a0winners\u00a0of the <a href=\"https:\/\/microbiologysociety.org\/resource\/stephen-dolan-and-shafi-mondal-announced-as-the-2026-winners-of-the-tony-trinci-award.html\">2026\u00a0Tony\u00a0Trinci\u00a0Award<\/a>.\u00a0The <a href=\"https:\/\/microbiologysociety.org\/grants-prizes\/all-prizes-and-competitions\/tony-trinci-award.html\">award<\/a> is given annually to a researcher deemed to be presenting the best mycological science at one of each Society\u2019s main scientific meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Biochemistry Bachelor of Science program<\/strong> at Clemson University has been fully re-accredited by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbmb.org\/\">The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology<\/a> for another 7-year cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dr. Meredith Morris<\/strong> has been awarded a <a href=\"https:\/\/fulbrightspecialist.worldlearning.org\/\">Fulbright Specialist grant<\/a> to strengthen international research and training partnerships between the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.paru.cas.cz\/en\/\">&nbsp;Institute of Parasitology<\/a>&nbsp;in the Czech Republic and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/scienceweb.clemson.edu\/epic\/\">Eukaryotic Pathogens Innovation Center&nbsp;(EPIC)<\/a> at Clemson University. This project brings together two globally recognized centers focused on understanding parasites that impact human and animal health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Graduate student <strong>John McCoy<\/strong> presented at the <a href=\"https:\/\/scacademysci.org\/\">South Carolina Academy of Science Meeting <\/a>and won an award for first place for best graduate student presentation.
