This may sound hard to believe when you commonly hear that “print is dying”, but in reality it is just evolving and situating itself within an ever-diversifying array of communications channels. Even as our society transitions from more traditional means of communication via print media to more modern digital outlets such as online forums, personal websites, the need to control color accuracy within these production processes is a moving target—one which necessitates understanding of color theory and practical application.

In between keynotes, networking sessions, and vendor product showcases, the COLOR20 conference program featured three main tracks of educational sessions: print and production, brand and design; and standards, research, and case studies. Event organizers, Printing Industries of America (PIA), and Specialty Graphic Imaging Association (SGIA) did well to bring together an all-star cast of technically-minded color experts and product specialists to deliver a vital update to the state of the art in color control and management techniques and trends.

Dr. Walker and Michelle Mayer, both of Clemson University, present cutting edge color research on AI (artificial intelligence) systems that enable real-time color correction for live broadcasts.

Thankfully with the large number of sessions, the conference ran for three days during which students and faculty were able to hit a little bit of everything. This allowed for an appreciation and understanding of how research and case studies lead to the foundation of what constitutes printing and production standards. It also allowed for an insight into how to leverage these standards to help better understand how a responsible graphic designer should be designing. A deep understanding of these process variables, requirements, and limitations ultimately helps eliminate mistakes before they even happen and saves time and money.

This was a totally worthwhile event, but it isn’t the only opportunity like this that’s out there available to Clemson students. Every year the Graphic Communications department sends students all over the U.S. to locations like San Diego (COLOR20), Dallas (Printing United), Chicago (Print19), Los Angeles (AdobeMAX), and more. Students should remember to talk to their professors and figure out what all is available out in the conference circuit. Maybe one day you, the student, might find yourself with that “golden ticket” to take you where you want to go.

ClemsonGC students attend Color Conference 2020 in San Diego, CA, January 2020. This is an event in which Forbes invites the most influential and innovative Chief Marketing Officers to gather in the same room to discuss accomplishments, struggles, ideas, and the evolution of the ever-important CMO role. For the first time ever, Forbes invited students from the business schools that host their University Alumni Series and asked them to attend this year’s exclusive event. I was honored to be chosen as one of the four students in attendance.

My internship with the Erwin Center for Brand Communications provided me with the opportunity to create content and help plan the inaugural Clemson CMO Summit in partnership with Forbes. It was an incredible experience that both challenged me and inspired me. Ever since this event, I have continued to keep up with the amazing things that Forbes is doing through the CMO Network. Thus, when I was presented with the opportunity to attend the Forbes CMO Summit, I was ecstatic.

Next thing I knew, I was headed to beautiful Laguna Niguel, California to attend the Summit. Over the span of three days, I heard from CMOs of the world’s biggest brands such as Facebook, Adobe, Target, Pinterest, Anheuser-Busch, Taco Bell, Denny’s, Dunkin, SAP, Chipotle, Marriott, Wells Fargo, NHL, Citi, and Ally Bank — and these are just a few. Not only did I get to listen to these CMO’s ideas, but I also was able to have one on one conversations with them which were invaluable, especially as a student aspiring to enter the industry. It was an honor to represent the GC program, the Erwin Center, and the College of Business on the Forbes CMO stage and throughout the event.

Some of my favorite takeaways from the event are:

As a marketer and specifically a CMO, you are the chief dot connector.

Robots should not be doing marketing. It is not only science or art, but both.

Every company benefits from a culture that encourages bold creativity.

Data does not make decisions, it is only as good as the questions asked.

Consistency is the output, diversity is the input.

Join a company that wants to do GREAT things.

I am so thankful for the opportunity to attend the Forbes CMO Summit. I am thankful for the GC Department for helping to make this opportunity a reality, the Erwin Center for Brand Communications for bringing the Forbes University Alumni Series to Clemson University and connecting me with the CMO Network, for the hotel accommodations generously covered by Clemson Alum and Erwin Center Board Member Lisa Holladay of Ritz Carlton, and for the invitation extended to students by Jenny Rooney, Editor of the Forbes CMO Network. It was an amazing experience that I will never forget. I encourage Clemson GC students to attend the future Clemson CMO Summits and to keep up with the Forbes CMO Network, as both are a wealth of knowledge for anyone wanting to enter the industry.

Written by Caroline Schoenberger, Class of ‘20 This year Forbes hosted it’s 15th annual Forbes CMO Summit. Dr. Blue brings years of experience with him in different parts of the graphics industry, and we are very excited to see what he will bring to the department. Dr. Blue enjoys working in graphics and has spent most of his life as a designer.

After finishing his undergrad in Graphic Design and Communication at Appalachian State University, Dr. Blue Moved to Charlotte, NC. While there, he worked at the Charlotte Observer, Charlotte Post, WSOC TV and a tile studio where he did photography on tiles. Feeling like he needed a change, Dr. Blue went into the Peace Corps for three and a half years in Honduras and then Uruguay as a teacher in vocational education. After that he worked for a textile company in Charlotte handling their in-house marketing for trade shows. He then went back to Appalachian State University to get a graduate degree in Industrial Technology and Technical Communications followed by his doctorate in Technology, Education and Curriculum Instruction at NC State. Once he graduated with his EdD, Dr. Blue spent time in a Graphic Communications program in Iowa and Illinois before moving to Maine where he taught courses in a technology management program with a core in graphics.

Dr. Blue has always liked teaching graphics and, “It was always there, in my mind, how I would love to work here [Clemson]”. So, when an opportunity arose to come to Clemson, he knew it would be a challenge and was eager to take it on. Dr. Blue views everything he does as problem solving, “How can I create something within constraints?” and believes that learning through failures is important in order to succeed. One thing Dr. Blue hopes students gain from his class is confidence; the confidence to say that you can do something, and you have that knowledge.

One piece of advice that Dr. Blue has for students’ is don’t let yourself be the one to say no, and to take on opportunities and challenges. He would also like students to know that he is here to help and if you need anything just knock on his door or send him an email! Adobe hosts The Creativity Conference every year, and this year, Julia Pruitt, Emily Algary, Emily Smith, Bethany Wheeler, Dr. Erica Walker, and Mr. Daryl Stevens had the opportunity to experience the magic. It was mostly hosted in the Los Angeles Conference Center with events in the Microsoft Theater, the Regal Theater, the Marriott Hotel, and the Staples Center and gave the attendees some time on either ends of the conference to explore the city. This three day conference consisted of hundreds of people gathering to perfect their skills, feast on inspiration, learn from other designers, and explore what’s next for creatives and the world of Adobe.

Through keynote speakers from Adobe Executives to Billie Eilish and 300+ available inspirational and instructive sessions, labs, and workshops, the students were flooded with ideas, information, and skills. As the conference was many times described as “drinking from a firehose”, the Graphic Communications students and professors were able to hear and learn from incredible graphic designers, art and creative directors, illustrators, video, film, and motion graphics professionals, photographers, technology and business strategists, and Adobe Creative Cloud partners.

Also, AdobeMAX allowed the students and professors to meet with ClemsonGC alumni who were attending the conference with their businesses. This was a unique opportunity for the students to see what life after graduation is like and for the professors to see where their work with students is being implemented. Meeting up with alumni and current Adobe employee Alexa Rickard was even more special as they were able to take a behind-the-scenes tour of the main keynote stage. This exclusive look into the equipment, work, and people behind the production of AdobeMAX was truly remarkable.

Along with the scheduled sessions, AdobeMAX offered networking experience through the Community Pavilion with many sponsors represented such as Pantone and HP, lunches and meet-ups with other students, educators, professionals, and Adobe employees, and the MAX Bash. Adobe gave extensive insight into user tips and new updates on their existing programs such as Illustrator, Photoshop, Premier Pro, and After Effects, but they also introduced new programs and features in the Sneaks session.

The AdobeMAX Creative Conference offered the Graphic Communications students an amazing experience to learn so much about the programs they use every day, meet other designers and creative professionals from around the world, and expand their understanding and inspiration to take back to the classroom and into their future careers!

Written by Julia Pruitt, class of 2021 On November 3 through November 7, four Clemson Graphic Communications students and two faculty members had the experience of a lifetime at AdobeMAX in Los Angeles, CA. Dr. Bridges comes from Gardner-Webb University in North Carolina to join the Clemson GC team. With her arrival, Bridges brings a well-rounded knowledge of the graphic communications industry and years of experience teaching in the classroom. Bridges is a Boone, North Carolina native that loves being immersed in the mountains. When she is not exploring the mountains, Bridges loves to root for the Atlanta Braves and Tennessee Volunteers (although she now also supports the Tigers). She is a graduate of Appalachian State University’s Graphic Arts and Imaging Technologies program. It was at App State when she discovered her love for teaching. After leaving App State, she decided to further her education at Gardner Webb University and continued to follow her passion for teaching.

Bridges is excited to join the ClemsonGC program where students have the opportunity to design something and see it all the way through production. This is something that she yearned to provide to her former students and is pleased to have a large amount of production equipment to help bring a design to life. Passionate about both the design and production sides of Graphic Communications, Bridges fits right in here at the ClemsonGC program.

One important piece of advice that Bridges would tell students is to keep learning always, even after you leave the program. Being in an ever-changing industry that is so influenced by technology, she advises that continual learning helps to make students adaptable and ready for change after graduation.
