Their collective expertise spans statistics, optimization, and data science, all of which align closely with the department&#8217;s mission to solve complex problems and create human-centered solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Associate Chair Update<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clemson.edu\/cecas\/departments\/ie\/people\/faculty\/srinivasan.html\">Dr. Divya Srinivasan<\/a> begins her sabbatical this fall, the department extends sincere thanks for her outstanding service as Associate Chair. Her leadership has been instrumental in supporting faculty, staff, and students and in helping the department thrive. Stepping into the role of Associate Chair for the 2025-2026 academic year is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clemson.edu\/cecas\/departments\/ie\/people\/faculty\/yongjis.html\">Dr. Yongjia Song<\/a>, who brings deep experience and a strong commitment to the department&#8217;s mission. She previously served as an IE faculty member at Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University in Turkey. She holds a Ph.D. in IE from Iowa State University. He recently completed his Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering at Rutgers University, where he conducted award-winning research on offshore wind forecasting, statistical deep learning, and sustainable energy systems. His interdisciplinary work combines physics-informed machine learning with real-world renewable energy applications. He earned his Ph.D. in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan. His research includes industrial data science, quality and reliability engineering, and the design and calibration of digital twins. His work focuses on systems such as wind power and smart buildings. He is the recipient of multiple national paper awards and prestigious fellowships, including the Edward P. First, they ran controlled experiments in a mock assembly environment to study how high cognitive demands affect worker performance. Next, they used collected data to build and parameterize optimization models to propose improved policies for allocating labor. Students developed optimization models that incorporated community-centered objectives &#8211; ensuring fair access across diverse populations.  They also studied how stakeholders might interact with model outputs and visualizations, iteratively refining models based on feedback. He has received the <strong>Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award<\/strong> from <strong>Clemson University<\/strong>, the <strong>College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences (CECAS)<\/strong> and the <strong>Department of Industrial Engineering<\/strong>, as well as the <strong>Teaching Assistant of the Year Award<\/strong>, a distinction voted on by students within IE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These awards are a testament to Morteza&#8217;s dedication to academic excellence and student engagement. As a graduate teacher of record, he has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to fostering an inclusive and intellectually rigorous learning environment. His approach to instruction is characterized by clarity, accessibility, and a genuine enthusiasm for the subject matter\u2014qualities that have earned him widespread respect from both students and faculty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One IE undergraduate student wrote, \u201cI\u2019ve never met a more caring and genuine person\u2014he goes above and beyond, both in and outside the classroom.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond his experience in teaching, Morteza&#8217;s research focuses on stochastic operations research. \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Brittany Sanders-Bell is no stranger to Clemson&#8217;s Industrial Engineering department. With both a bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degree in IE under her belt (earned in 2020 and 2023, respectively), she\u2019s now pursuing her Ph.D. in engineering and science education, aiming to finish by 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, Brittany serves as the Assistant Director of <em>Next Engineers Greenville<\/em>, a $5.5 million initiative supported by the GE Aerospace Foundation, GE Vernova, and Clemson\u2019s own PEER and WISE program. PEER (Programs for Educational Enrichment and Retention) and WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) are dedicated to recruiting, educating, and retaining students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through mentorship, academic coaching, and enrichment opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her leadership role at <em>Next Engineers<\/em>, Brittany manages operations, logistics, reporting, and partner relationships for the Greenville chapter. She also connects with colleagues from other Next Engineers locations around the globe\u2014including Cincinnati, Johannesburg, and Staffordshire\u2014facilitating quarterly meetings to exchange ideas and improve programming. Thanks to her guidance, the first class of Next Engineers Greenville celebrated 49 graduates, many of whom chose Clemson for their continued education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brittany also wears a second hat as an assistant director for PEER and WISE, focusing on mentoring underrepresented students in STEM. Her efforts are helping to pave the way for a more inclusive and diverse generation of scientists and engineers. As a working mother, Brittany brings empathy and understanding to students juggling academic and personal responsibilities\u2014a perspective that resonates deeply with those she mentors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether she&#8217;s leading outreach efforts in local schools, giving spontaneous campus tours to prospective engineering students and their families, or advocating for increased representation in STEM, Brittany is a powerful force for change.
