<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\nH-CORE is a 10-week National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. The program brings students to Clemson to explore research at the intersection of humans, systems and analytics. This summer’s program will run from May 18 to July 24, 2026, with students selected for the program participating in hands-on research projects, professional development activities, mentorship and a final research seminar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Designed to prepare undergraduate students for interdisciplinary, human-centered research, H-CORE combines operations research and human factors methods to study complex systems in ways that account for both analytical decision-making and the human experiences within those systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\nThe 2026 H-CORE program is led by Dr. Thomas Sharkey<\/a>, Dr. Jessica Avil\u00e9s<\/a>, and Dr. Emily Tucker<\/a>. Students selected for this summer will work on one of three research projects led by Clemson IE faculty mentors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One project, led by Dr. Sudeep Hegde<\/a>, will focus on human-AI teaming to support adaptive performance in healthcare systems. Students will explore how people and artificial intelligence can work together more effectively in complex healthcare environments, with an emphasis on decision-making, teamwork and technology that supports human expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A second project, led by Dr. Thomas Sharkey, will examine survivor-centered analytics to help disrupt the harm caused by sex trafficking. Students will learn how mathematical modeling and analytics can be used in ways that center the experiences and needs to survivors while helping identify approaches to disrupt trafficking networks and support long-term healing and recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A third project, led by Dr. David Neyens<\/a>, will study statistical analysis and large language models for effective health literacy. Students will investigate how interactions with tools such as ChatGPT and Claude may affect health education and decision-making, with a focus on how language models can influence health-related understanding and outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In addition to their research projects, H-CORE students will participate in weekly professional development discussions, mentorship meetings and visits to Clemson research centers and labs. Planned professional development topics include research-related skills, preparing for graduate school and industry careers, technical communication, resume preparation and conversations with current graduate students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The program also emphasizes mentorship throughout the summer. The annual event brings together students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors and friends of the department to celebrate achievements of the Clemson IE community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This year’s recipients were recognized for excellence in academics, research, leadership, teaching, service and professional development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The department recognized several undergraduate students for their academic achievement, leadership, service, research and contributions to the Clemson IE community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Academic Achievement Awards<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The Academic Achievement Awards recognize superior academic performance by undergraduate students in the department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Outstanding Junior Award<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The Outstanding Junior Award recognizes a student in the junior class who exemplifies all-around excellence through academic performance, engagement and contributions to the department and university community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Recipient: Jackson Plas<\/p>\n\n\n\n Elisabeth and Delbert L. Kimbler Undergraduate Research Award<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Established through the Edwin J. Freeman Endowment by Dr. Del Kimbler and the late Elisabeth Kimbler, this award encourages undergraduate research in industrial engineering and recognizes a student who has demonstrated excellence in research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Recipient: Amy Maffei <\/p>\n\n\n\n Janine Anthony Bowen ’89 Undergraduate Scholar<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Established through an endowment by Janine Anthony Bowen, along with family and friends, this award recognizes exceptional academic achievement by an undergraduate student in industrial engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Recipient: Baylie Mazyck<\/p>\n\n\n\n Karen and Carl R. Lindemeyer Leadership and Public Service Award<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This award is presented to a senior in industrial engineering who has demonstrated exceptional leadership, a commitment to public service, strong character and integrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Recipient: Hannah Baum<\/p>\n\n\n\n IISE Award of Excellence<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This award recognizes outstanding leadership and service to Clemson University’s student chapter of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Recipient: Gillian Banks<\/p>\n\n\n\n IE 4670 Senior Design Awards<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The IE 4670 Senior Design Awards recognize students who demonstrate outstanding leadership, collaboration and contributions to their senior design teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Graduate students were recognized for excellence in research, teaching, scholarship, leadership and service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Outstanding Graduate Research Assistant<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This award recognizes exceptional performance in the role of a graduate research assistant and honors contributions to the department’s research mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Recipient: Rahul Narasimhan<\/p>\n\n\n\n Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This award recognizes exceptional performance in supporting instruction, engaging students and contributing to the department’s educational mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Recipient: Emma Arnold<\/p>\n\n\n\n Student Memorial All-Around Excellence Award<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Established in memory of Sunanth Anand and Da Deng, this award honors a graduate student who exemplifies all-around excellence through academic achievement, positive spirit resilience and leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Recipient: Md Rashedul Islam<\/p>\n\n\n\n Student Development Award<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The Student Development Award recognizes outstanding scholarship by a current industrial engineering graduate student whose work has been accepted for publication in a high-profile refereed journal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Recipient: Vishwajeet Ransing<\/p>\n\n\n\n Janine Anthony Bowen ’89 Graduate Fellow<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Established through an endowment by Janine Anthony Bowen, along with family and friends, this award supports graduate education in industrial engineering and recognizes outstanding academic performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Recipient: Farhatul Janan<\/p>\n\n\n\n The department also recognized faculty and teaching contributions that support student success and strengthen the Clemson IE community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n IE CIVIC Award<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The IE CIVIC Award recognizes a faculty or staff member who exemplifies the department’s core values: Innovation, Excellence, Communication, Integrity, Vibrancy, Inclusiveness and Collegiality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Recipient: Dr. Jessica Avil\u00e9s<\/p>\n\n\n\n Professor of the Year<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The Professor of the Year Award is a student-voted honor, recognizing a faculty member whose teaching, mentorship and commitment to student success has made a meaningful impact on the student experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Recipient: Dr. Jeffrey Kharoufeh<\/p>\n\n\n\n Teaching Assistant of the Year<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The Teaching Assistant of the Year Award is a student-voted honor, recognizing a teaching assistant who has gone above and beyond to support students, strengthen their understanding of course material and contribute to a positive learning experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Recipient: Chloe Munn<\/p>\n\n\n\n Clemson IE congratulates each of this year’s award recipients and thanks them for the many ways they contribute to the department.
