The program brings students to Clemson to explore research at the intersection of humans, systems and analytics. This summer&#8217;s program will run from May 18 to July 24, 2026, with students selected for the program participating in hands-on research projects, professional development activities, mentorship and a final research seminar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Designed to prepare undergraduate students for interdisciplinary, human-centered research, H-CORE combines operations research and human factors methods to study complex systems in ways that account for both analytical decision-making and the human experiences within those systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:44px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.clemson.edu\/industrial-engineering\/files\/2025\/10\/Faculty-Leadership-Headshots-Collage-.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.clemson.edu\/industrial-engineering\/files\/2025\/10\/Faculty-Leadership-Headshots-Collage--1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.clemson.edu\/industrial-engineering\/files\/2025\/10\/Faculty-Leadership-Headshots-Collage--1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.clemson.edu\/industrial-engineering\/files\/2025\/10\/Faculty-Leadership-Headshots-Collage--300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.clemson.edu\/industrial-engineering\/files\/2025\/10\/Faculty-Leadership-Headshots-Collage--768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.clemson.edu\/industrial-engineering\/files\/2025\/10\/Faculty-Leadership-Headshots-Collage--1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.clemson.edu\/industrial-engineering\/files\/2025\/10\/Faculty-Leadership-Headshots-Collage-.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:31px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2026 H-CORE program is led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clemson.edu\/cecas\/departments\/ie\/people\/faculty\/sharkey.html\">Dr. Thomas Sharkey<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clemson.edu\/cecas\/departments\/ie\/people\/faculty\/aviles.html\">Dr. Jessica Avil\u00e9s<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clemson.edu\/cecas\/departments\/ie\/people\/faculty\/tucker.html\">Dr. Emily Tucker<\/a>. Students selected for this summer will work on one of three research projects led by Clemson IE faculty mentors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Summer 2026 Research Projects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One project, led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clemson.edu\/cecas\/departments\/ie\/people\/faculty\/hegde.html\">Dr. Sudeep Hegde<\/a>, will focus on human-AI teaming to support adaptive performance in healthcare systems. Students will explore how people and artificial intelligence can work together more effectively in complex healthcare environments, with an emphasis on decision-making, teamwork and technology that supports human expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A second project, led by Dr. Thomas Sharkey, will examine survivor-centered analytics to help disrupt the harm caused by sex trafficking. Students will learn how mathematical modeling and analytics can be used in ways that center the experiences and needs to survivors while helping identify approaches to disrupt trafficking networks and support long-term healing and recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A third project, led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clemson.edu\/cecas\/departments\/ie\/people\/faculty\/neyens.html\">Dr. David Neyens<\/a>, will study statistical analysis and large language models for effective health literacy. Students will investigate how interactions with tools such as ChatGPT and Claude may affect health education and decision-making, with a focus on how language models can influence health-related understanding and outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">A Full Summer Research Experience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to their research projects, H-CORE students will participate in weekly professional development discussions, mentorship meetings and visits to Clemson research centers and labs. Planned professional development topics include research-related skills, preparing for graduate school and industry careers, technical communication, resume preparation and conversations with current graduate students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program also emphasizes mentorship throughout the summer. Each student will be supported by a faculty research mentor, an REU leadership mentor and a graduate student mentor, creating a layered support system for research, professional development and personal growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the conclusion of the program, each project team will present its research to the Clemson Ie community, including faculty and graduate students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through H-CORE, Clemson IE continues to support undergraduate research experiences that reflect the department&#8217;s strengths in human-centered systems, operations research His work spans financial services, energy, aviation, and consulting, with contributions that have generated significant organizational value and even led to multiple patent applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harris has also maintained a strong and consistent connection to Clemson throughout his career. He served as an adjunct faculty member for more than a decade, advised graduate students, supported research collaborations, and contributed as a member of the Industrial Engineering Advisory Board.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:48px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>His career reflects not only technical excellence, but also a deep commitment to mentorship, collaboration, and advancing the field of industrial engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:43px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Jeffrey S. Powell, B.S. 1996<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Jeff Powell has built an exceptional career defined by leadership, service, and global impact. After earning his degree from Clemson, he served nearly three decades in the United States Navy, rising to the rank of Captain and leading complex engineering and operational efforts across the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout his military career, Powell held numerous leadership roles, including commanding Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 133 and serving as Commanding Officer of Naval Construction Battalion Center Gulfport. His work spanned multiple continents, overseeing large-scale infrastructure, logistics, and operational systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following his retirement from the Navy, Powell transitioned into the private sector, where he now serves as a Vice President and Client Account Director at AECOM. He quickly established himself as a high-performing professional, earning a promotion to Management Consultant within his first two years and contributing to large-scale projects, including work supporting one of the largest U.S. bank mergers in recent history.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:45px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In parallel with his professional growth, Fanning has continued to invest in his education and leadership development. College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mazyck is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering with a minor in Management Information Systems and a Six Sigma Certificate. Her leadership and service have centered on creating welcoming, supportive spaces for other students.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:42px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As a CECAS liaison for Clemson&#8217;s Student Ethics Committee, CHANGE, Mazyck has helped plan and support programs that promote ethical decision-making and values-based leadership. Her nomination letter described her as a steady and encouraging presence who helps students feel seen, valued and included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mazyck has also served as a PEER\/WISE mentor and is involved in student organizations including the National Society of Black Engineers, Society for Women Engineers, CHANGE Ethics Program and the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers. Recipients must be graduating seniors with a GPA of 3.4 or higher and have made noteworthy contributions through leadership, service, creative endeavors or other involvement in their department, college and university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nickles is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering with a minor in Mathematical Sciences. He has also served as president of Psi Upsilon fraternity and has mentored fellow students through tutoring and student leadership roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nickles has gained professional experience through internships with Michelin and Booz Allen Hamilton, applying industrial engineering, data analysis and software development skills to real-world challenges. Snelsire Award, which honors the memory of Dr. Bob Snelsire, a professor of electrical engineering and champion of underrepresented students in the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences. The award recognizes a student who has made outstanding contributions to student success and support initiatives in the college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Testa is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering with a minor in Mathematical Sciences. He has built a strong record of service, outreach and leadership through his work with PEER &amp; WISE and as an IE Ambassador.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As an intern with PEER &amp; WISE, Testa tutors engineering students, leads exam study sessions, supports precollegiate programming and helps design outreach activities for diverse audiences. In his ambassador role, he represents Clemson IE during campus tours, recruiting events and college functions, helping prospective students and their families feel welcomed, informed and supported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His nomination materials highlighted his student-centered approach to outreach, including his initiative in reaching out to visiting prospective students before they arrived on campus to welcome them and help ease the uncertainty that can come with a college visit. World Report<\/em> rankings, with top placements across its undergraduate, graduate and online graduate programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The department&#8217;s undergraduate program is ranked No. 12 among public universities, while the graduate program rose to No. 14 and the online master&#8217;s program climbed to No. 11 nationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, the rankings reflect the department&#8217;s continued momentum in preparing students to solve complex problems across industries, from advanced manufacturing and logistics to health care, human systems, operations research and supply chain management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our rankings reflect the quality of our students, the dedication of our faculty and staff, and the impact of our alumni,&#8221; help students learn more about engineering majors, connect with alumni and industry professionals, and meet faculty and staff from undergraduate engineering departments across the College of Engineering, Computing and Allied Sciences. For many students, the event it an important step in learning how difference engineering majors connect to their interests, strengths and long-term goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Industrial Engineering was represented by faculty, staff, current students and alumni, giving students multiple perspectives on the major and its career pathways. Conversations highlighted the versatility of industrial engineering, including its focus on improving systems, optimizing processes, supporting better decision-making and designing solutions that work for people.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:63px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For many students still exploring their options, the even offered a chance to better understand how industrial engineering connects technical problem-solving with real-world impact. Faculty, staff, students and alumni helped explain how IE applies across industries such as healthcare, manufacturing, supply chain, logistics, consulting, technology and human-centered systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;Major Discovery Night gives us an important opportunity to meet students while they are still exploring where they fit within engineering. Mid-Atlanta Regional Conference<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Clemson University IISE Student Chapter hosted the 2026 IISE Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference from February 20-22, 2026, welcoming industrial and systems engineering students and professionals from across the region to Clemson. The conference theme, &#8220;Innovating the Impossible,&#8221; highlighted the role of industrial engineers in pushing boundaries, solving complex problems and imagining new possibilities for the field. The Clemson University IISE Student Chapter received the Clemson University Organization of the Year award from Omicron Delta Kappa. The award is the highest honor a Clemson student organization can receive and recognizes a group that goes above and beyond in service, leadership and academics.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:52px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Students Receive National IISE Scholarships<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Five Clemson IE students also received IISE scholarships, reflecting their academic excellence, leadership and professional promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Elizabeth Dulaney<\/strong>, a junior industrial engineering student in the Clemson University Honors College, received the Dwight D. Gardner Scholarship. Dulaney is pursuing a career in medicine and is interested in the integration of engineering analysis, data-driven problem solving and patient care. Her experience includes patient-centered research focused on improving emergency department arrival and check-in processes, undergraduate research in biomedical engineering and clinical experience as a medical assistant. She also served on the Clemson IISE Conference Committee for the 2026 Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ata Ozer<\/strong>, a junior industrial engineering student, also received the Dwight D. Gardner Scholarship. Ozer&#8217;s experience includes industrial engineering and continuous improvement internships with Westinghouse Electric and IVA, where his work focused on Lean manufacturing, process optimization, quality improvement and projected cost savings. He is also involved with Clemson Engineers for Developing Communities, where he held a functional management leadership role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Samantha Morin<\/strong>, a sophomore industrial engineering student with a computing emphasis in the Clemson University Honors College, received the Jabil Cares Foundation Excellence in Engineering Scholarship. The scholarship recognizes a junior-level engineering student who demonstrates academic excellence, leadership and a commitment to making a positive societal impact through engineering. Morin has maintained a 4.00 GPA and has experience as a tutor through the Clemson University Academic Success Center and as an automation engineering intern with PAI Pharma, where she applied computing and engineering concepts to manufacturing efficiency projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jackson Plas<\/strong>, a junior industrial engineering student and business administration minor, received the IISE Council of Fellows Undergraduate Scholarship. Plas served as president-elect of the Clemson IISE student chapter and helped lead planning for the 2026 IISE Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference. His experience includes internships with NASA and Piston Automotive, where he worked on engineering design, line rebalancing, process optimization and operational improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sam Koscelny<\/strong>, a Ph.D. student in industrial engineering, received the Gilbreth Memorial Fellowship. Koscelny&#8217;s research focuses on human factors, human-AI interaction and healthcare informatics. His work includes research on pediatric mental and behavioral health in emergency care and adaptive human-AI interaction with healthcare chatbots. He is advised by Dr. David Neyens and has published work related to pediatric emergency department utilization, healthcare chatbot information presentation and patient care pathways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Dr. Emily Tucker Receives Outstanding Early Career Faculty Recognition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Clemson IE faculty were also recognized through IISE. <strong>Emily Tucker<\/strong>, Dean&#8217;s Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering, received the Dr. Hamed K. Eldin Outstanding Early Career IE in Academia Award. The award recognizes early career IISE members in academia who have demonstrated outstanding characteristics in education, leadership, professionalism and potential in industrial engineering, and who have made engineering contributions through application, design, research or development of IE methods. They investigated how personal attributes including physical fitness, age, gender, and cognitive capacity should influence training progressions. First, they ran controlled experiments in a mock assembly environment to study how high cognitive demands affect worker performance. Next, they used collected data to build and parameterize optimization models to propose improved policies for allocating labor. The models were intended to reduce errors, improve workflow, and enhance worker satisfaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-center\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 44%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong>Optimizing Community Access to Local Parks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faculty Mentor: Dr. Emily Tucker<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This project addressed equity in community infrastructure. Students developed optimization models that incorporated community-centered objectives &#8211; ensuring fair access across diverse populations.  They also studied how stakeholders might interact with model outputs and visualizations, iteratively refining models based on feedback.
