Walk zone to make campus safer for pedestrians and riders

A new “walk zone” at the center of campus between the library and Calhoun Drive will help make a busy part of Clemson University safer for pedestrians and bicyclists.

People on bicycles, skateboards, skates and scooters must dismount as they pass through the walk zone, preventing collisions that could hurt pedestrians and riders alike. Golf carts must bypass the area, except for those used by groundskeepers and food-service workers.

The walk zone is bordered on the south by the library and the sidewalks that surround it and on the north by Calhoun Drive. Its west side is at rear of Bracket, Hardin and Olin halls and the east is at Martin, Kinard and Daniel halls.

The first signs at the entrances to the walk zone should be installed Friday. The signs will have maps that identify nearby buildings and show the locations of accessible entrances.

Clemson University police will give warnings to those who ride bicycles, skateboards, skates or scooters in the walk zone this semester. Beginning in spring semester, they will ticket violators.

The idea for the walk zone is part of the 2012 Bikeways Master Plan, a blueprint for identifying and developing a network of bicycle paths, bike lanes and shared roadways on and around campus.

The plan already has resulted in a number of new bikeways on the campus, including bicycle lanes being added to McMillan and Cherry roads and shared roadways designated by “sharrows” on many interior campus roads. Future bicycle improvements are planned for the new Douthit Hills development.
