Clemson Service Alliance seeks nominations for service-learning award

The Clemson Service Alliance seeks nominations for the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education Service-Learning Award for academic year 2014-2015.

Complete the online nomination form by 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17. Please note that entries this year must be submitted using the online nomination form.

All nominations received will be reviewed and evaluated by a committee of faculty, staff and students involved in service-learning activities at Clemson, and one project will be selected to be Clemson’s representative/nominee for the 2015 award.  Former winners of this award are not eligible for nomination.

For the purposes of the competition, service-learning is defined as college-student learning at any level and in any situation that is linked in a direct, hands-on fashion to the resolution of a problem or concern in a target community outside the institution.

The service learning activity must reinforce or apply what is learned in the classroom, must be related to a college course, with some type of reflection on the activity performed or feedback discussion.  Projects may also be collaborative ventures between colleges and universities.

The review panel will assess projects based on four criteria:

  • The ability to resolve community concerns or address community issues.
  • The degree to which the project enhances student learning.
  • The degree to which the project meets the parameters of the Commission’s definition of service-learning
  • The project’s impact on campus (e.g., the number of students involved).
