Director of grants and contracts administration named

After a national search, Tracy R. Walters has been named director of grants and contracts administration (post award). Walters is currently the director of sponsored program services at the University of Connecticut, where he directs all post-award (technical and financial) activities after the receipt of a sponsored award including: accounts receivable, award setup, award negotiation, cash management, effort reporting, outgoing sub-recipient contracts and monitoring, quality assurance, regulatory compliance, reporting, sponsored invoicing and terms and conditions review.

Walters served in similar capacities at Yale University and at the University of Georgia.

“I am looking forward to and excited to be joining an institution that is focused in growing and expanding its research programs,” he said. “I’m excited to work with the faculty, administration and staff in helping Clemson meet and exceed its goals.”

Walters replaces Roberta Elrod, who is retiring after more than 34 years at Clemson. Elrod served as the director of grants and contracts administration the past 14 years.

“I am excited to welcome Tracy Walters,” said Tanju Karanfil, vice president for research. “He brings vast experience in research administration, grants management and financial analysis to Clemson. I also want to thank Roberta Elrod for her many years of exceptional service at Clemson. She leaves big shoes to fill and has graciously agreed to remain on temporarily to assist Tracy with his transition to Clemson.”

Executive Vice President for Finance and Operations Brett Dalton said, “Tracy immediately adds immense value in coordinating the post award function with the Research division. We are incredibly excited about having him join the Clemson Family. Tracy will be a tremendous asset in helping Clemson to achieve its research goals as a part of the Clemson Forward Plan.”

Walters will begin work on April 16.
