Faculty Senate elects new leadership

By Jackie Todd, Office of University Relations

Faculty senators elected Danny Weathers, an associate professor in the marketing department, as the Faculty Senate vice present/president-elect. His term will begin April 10. Jan Holmevik, an associate professor in the English department, will assume the Faculty Senate presidency at that time. Weathers will become as president for the 2019-20 term.

As chair of the senate’s policy committee, Weathers has become very familiar with issues that affect faculty.  As the vice president/president-elect, he wants to continue the good working relationships Faculty Senate has maintained with the university’s administration, board of trustees and staff. Additionally, Weathers wants to increase accountability and transparency throughout the university. Toward that end, communication is key.

“Clemson is stronger when faculty, staff, administration and trustees solve problems together,” he said.

Weathers pledged to find ways to help faculty dedicate more time to teaching and research as they juggle those tasks with administrative duties and committee work.

“In my view, the answer is greater efficiency, which can be achieved through modifying policies, committee structures and responsibilities,” he explained. Weathers said he wants the Faculty Senate to find ways to encourage involvement without overburdening faculty.

“That way, faculty can spend more time on what they want to be doing, which I hope is research and teaching,” he said.

“Danny has been a laser-sharp chair of policy,” said Faculty Senate President Amy Lawton-Rauh. “He’s an excellent communicator of policies and how they relate to shared governance and faculty and staff success. He will be an excellent leader.”

Matthew Macauley, associate professor of mathematical sciences, was elected and will become the 2018-19 Faculty Senate secretary.
