Joe Frank Allen, professor emeritus, department chair – April 15, 2020

Joe Frank Allen, 85, of Clemson, professor emeritus of chemistry and associate department chair, died April 15, 2020. He retired from Clemson in 1992.

Allen earned a chemistry degree from Berry College in Rome, Georgia, in 1955. He earned a master’s degree from the University of Mississippi and Ph.D. from Georgia Tech. He worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in his specialty field of radiochemistry, then he was hired as a chemistry professor at Clemson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, after 57 years of marriage. He is survived by two children, Debby Brackett and Trent Allen, both of Clemson; a brother, Thomas Henry Allen of Sevierville, Tennessee; and five grandchildren.

There will be a private graveside service at Woodland Cemetery with immediate family. A memorial service will be planned in the future. Memorial donations can be sent to Clemson First Baptist Church of Clemson or the GHS Hospice of the Foothills in Seneca.
