John F. Welter, professor emeritus, alumnus – March 23, 2020

John F. Welter, 89, Professor Emeritus of Poultry Science, died March 23, 2020. He retired from Clemson University in 1988 after 27 years.

A graduate of Clemson, he served two years as a second lieutenant in the Korean War.

He returned to Clemson in 1961 with his family to manage the Poultry Science Farm and to obtain his master’s degree in poultry science. He continued to work at Clemson University as an Extension and 4-H agent for the poultry science department until his retirement.

He is survived by children Steven Welter (Brenda) of Central, Lynn Schmid (Larry) of Travelers Rest, Karen Lanham (Bill) of Clemson, Johnsie Theising (Tom) of Alvin, Texas, Hank Welter (Simons) of Brevard, North Carolina, Chris Ratchford (Mary Galen) of Demorest, Georgia, and Mary Fran Crosswell (Hal) of Greenville; 15 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

The family will make plans for a memorial celebration of life in the future.
