Sam Hoover

Clemson University mourns the death of Sam Hoover, the Director of Cloud and Software Services in CCIT’s Research Computing and Data division. Hoover passed away on February 16, 2023.

Hoover was hired at Clemson in 2005 and served in a variety of duties during his more than 17 years with CCIT. Hoover played a key role in the University’s COVID-19 response and testing protocol. He also notably led the development of the my.Clemson app and served on the Staff Senate Welfare Committee since 2020.

“Sam was always looking for a better and more modern solution,” said Dr. Jill Gemmill, Executive Director of CCIT’s Research Computing & Data Engagement division. “He was responsible for introducing the Atlassian software management suite to CCIT and used parallel computing to solve backup challenges. He was at the forefront of responding to student demands for mobile phone access to Clemson services. Sam especially shined when working with the many student interns he recruited and trained over the years. We were looking forward to the leadership he would provide with research use of cloud technologies. Sam will be missed both personally and professionally.”
