After coming to the US, she received her B.A. from the University of North Texas in 1970 and later earned her Ph.D. from Rice University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After several years teaching at Yale University, Riley joined the Clemson University faculty in 1985 as a Professor of German and served as chair of the Department of Languages from 1985-1986.&nbsp;She was named an Alumni Distinguished Professor in 1995.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An active scholar,&nbsp;specializing in, among other subjects, the important 19<sup>th<\/sup>-century Romantic poet Ludwig von Arnim, Riley\u2019s published writings in German Studies include&nbsp;<em>Idee und Gestaltung.&nbsp;Das konfigurative Strukturprinzip in der Kurzprosa Achim von Arnims<\/em>&nbsp;(Lang, 1977);&nbsp;<em>Ludwig Achim von Arnims Jugend-und-Reisejahre. Ein Beitrag zur Biographie&nbsp;<\/em>(Bouvier, 1978);&nbsp;<em>Achim von Arnim&nbsp;<\/em><em>in Selbstzeugnissen und Bilddokumenten&nbsp;<\/em>(Rowohlt, 1979; revised, 1995);&nbsp;<em>Michael&nbsp;Kalteisen: Ein Deutscher in South Carolina,&nbsp;<\/em>(M. Fink, 1995); and<em>&nbsp;Hildegard von Bingen&nbsp;<\/em>(Rowohlt, 1997). It seeks to make sense of a crisis that is still unfolding via its effects on people\u2019s beliefs, thoughts, and behaviors. It demonstrates how Covid-19 breaks through diverse ethnic, cultural, socio-economic, and ideological realms, and encompasses the undefined, infinite, and invisible \u201cother\u201d engaged in the same traumatic experience. In eight chapters, the volume examines and illuminates Herder\u2019s conception of human freedom in connection with time; the importance of the concept of forces (<em>Kr\u00e4fte<\/em>) for a dynamic ontology; human beings\u2019 sensuous experience of inner and external temporality; Herder\u2019s conception of&nbsp;<em>Bildung<\/em>, speculations on extra-terrestrial beings and on different perceptions of time; the mythological figure Nemesis and Herder\u2019s view of the past and the future; the temporal dimension in Herder\u2019s aesthetics; and Herder\u2019s biblical studies in relationship to divine infinitude and human temporality. Please see this message from Lecturer of German, Lee Ferrell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is with sadness that I learned only recently of the passing of our former colleague Prof. Ed Arnold on January 3, 2024 after a years-long battle with dementia.\u00a0 Ed taught German at Clemson University from 1968 until 2000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the summer after I was hired to teach at Clemson in 2003, Ed invited me for lunch to talk to me about the university and to welcome me to the German program.\u00a0 This began a tradition for us both of meeting once per semester to have breakfast and chat about our lives.\u00a0 Ed frequently would talk about his former students, the trips he had arranged for them in the former East Germany and about his work with Habitat for Humanity and Clemson Community Cares. He remained active in the community until declining health made it impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to his community work, Ed regularly translated documents from German to English including the book\u00a0<em>Blues and Trouble<\/em>\u00a0by Lutheran Pastor and activist Theo Lehmann.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ed was a man of faith but more impressive to me was his humility. He was very sincere and also very accepting of other people and grateful for the students he had taught throughout his career.\u00a0 One of his students, Chris Broome (LAIB\u00a0 \u201996), recalls his first semester in German \u201cI didn\u2019t do great in that course, but Ed told me to \u2018keep on keepin\u2019 on. Speech data from naturally-occurring conversations by 56 children and adults of both sexes are analyzed within Myers-Scotton\u2019s Matrix Language Frame (MLF) model.
