Throughout his time in the program, Mario has embraced every opportunity available to him—whether that meant earning the Business Analytics certificate, studying abroad at IESEG, participating in the Oxford program or attending Clemson MBA events and networking opportunities. His journey serves as a powerful reminder that online students in the Clemson MBA program have access to the same transformative experiences and opportunities as in-person students.

From the very beginning, Mario approached the program with a desire to grow both personally and professionally. One course in particular, Organizational Behavior, became one of the most impactful experiences of his MBA journey. Even while studying abroad at IESEG and learning about multicultural relationships and human resources, he found himself consistently applying course concepts to real-world situations and leadership challenges in his career.

Mario explained that he shared these insights with his VP, who immediately saw the value and asked him to teach these concepts to leaders across the organization. He ended up coordinating several weeks of Organizational Behavior training for more than 20 leaders across multiple states; a direct example of how Clemson’s coursework translated into real workplace improvement. He continues by saying there are “not enough positive words” to describe the impact the class had on him.

Mario Smith (front right beside table) with Paris IESEG group

That ability to immediately translate classroom learning into practical application became one of the defining aspects of Mario’s Clemson MBA experience. While he had already built a successful career and spent 16 years with the same company after graduating from college, the MBA program helped him realize there was still so much more to learn and explore. “The program did more than I expected,” Mario shares. “I didn’t necessarily need an MBA to move up in my company, but I started thinking strategically about how to gain a broader perspective and develop stronger leadership skills.”

For Mario, the Clemson MBA offered something many workplaces cannot. “The knowledge you receive, many companies can’t give it to you, not because they don’t want to, but because they don’t know how,” he says. As organizations continue to adapt to multigenerational workforces and evolving leadership dynamics, Mario believes that the Clemson MBA equips students not only with knowledge but also with the ability to apply it effectively. “Clemson gives you the knowledge, but they also teach you how to apply it. It gives you what the job cannot give you.”

As he progressed through the program and added experiences, such as the Business Analytics certificate, Mario began to see how much broader his opportunities could be. That realization became even clearer during Clemson MBA’s Oxford study abroad program, which he describes as a turning point in both his personal and professional growth.

Returning to the workforce after Oxford felt different because his perspective on leadership and communication had shifted significantly. “You learn your worth in the Clemson MBA program,” he reflects. “Oxford really drove that information home to me. It changed how I lead, how I interact with people and helped me realize there’s more that I want to do.”

Mario Smith at Oxford dinner

The Oxford experience sparked an even deeper interest in international business, leadership and diplomacy. Following changes in his professional circumstances, Mario decided to pursue the opportunity to study abroad at IESEG and deepen his international business experience.

At IESEG, Mario worked alongside students from around the world while learning from professors with diverse global perspectives. Even in such a competitive and international environment, he noticed something unique about Clemson MBA students. “I consistently felt well-prepared because of the foundation Clemson provided. The coursework gave other students and me from Clemson the academic strength and confidence to participate at a high level in a very competitive international environment, which we did well.”

Those experiences abroad continued shaping Mario’s long-term goals and eventually fueled his growing interest in diplomacy and government work. Clemson’s international partnerships and networking opportunities helped open doors, but Mario also recognized the importance of taking initiative and building relationships intentionally.

“You have to build your connections,” he says. “I had to learn how to expand my network and tailor my LinkedIn profile toward diplomacy.”

Through networking and outreach, Mario has connected with former ambassadors and government professionals, gaining valuable insights into diplomacy and public service. Along the way, he has also learned how to translate his business and project management experience into language and skills relevant to government sectors. Looking ahead, Mario hopes to eventually transition into politics, beginning with volunteer work for political campaigns and continuing to build experience in the field.

Mario Smith (back row on far left) with Oxford group

Alongside his incredible international experiences and career pivots, Mario consistently emphasizes one important message: online students in the Clemson MBA program have access to every opportunity the program offers.

“During orientation weekend, you begin building connections immediately,” he explains. “Those are people you continue to have classes with and relationships you can build throughout the program.”

From study abroad opportunities like Oxford and IESEG to networking events and leadership development, Mario stresses that the Clemson MBA creates opportunities for every student willing to pursue them. “Clemson always gives you the chance to make connections and explore different opportunities,” he says. “But it’s on you as an individual to take advantage of them and cultivate what you need to succeed.”

For current and prospective students, Mario’s advice is simple but impactful: “Take full advantage of every opportunity you have during this experience.” He views the MBA journey as a unique season of life that creates a safe environment to learn, grow, and challenge yourself before stepping back into the workforce.

“Your job right now is to absorb information,” Mario says. “Knowledge changes the way you think, lead and see the world.”

Mario Smith’s story reflects the true impact of the Clemson MBA experience. Those who meet Jessica quickly recognize her genuine warmth and positivity; her presence naturally encourages connection, and it is nearly impossible to leave a conversation with her without a smile. Her journey through life and through the Clemson MBA program is a powerful example of how character, empathy and leadership can shape a meaningful career.

Jessica’s commitment to serving others began early in her life. Growing up as one of five children in a missionary family, she learned the value of community and service from a young age. When she was eight years old, her family moved to Madrid, Spain, where she lived until she was nineteen. These formative years abroad shaped her worldview and strengthened her desire to invest in others’ lives. That sense of purpose continued to grow throughout her professional experiences and during her time in the Clemson MBA program.

Jessica Campbell (right) with Dr. Gail DePriest (left)

Reflecting on her graduate experience, Jessica shares, “The MBA program changed my life.” During the program, she encountered opportunities for personal reflection and growth that helped her recognize and address insecurities she had not previously identified. “I had the truth spoken into me,” she explains. One of the most impactful moments came early in the program with her first professor, Dr. Gail DePriest, who guided the class through a leadership assessment designed to help students better understand their natural leadership styles.

Through that assessment, Jessica discovered that she leads with love: an approach rooted in empathy, encouragement and genuine care for others. Dr. DePriest affirmed that leading with love is not only a strength but also a powerful form of leadership. For Jessica, that validation was transformative. “This was life-changing for me,” she recalls.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://blogs.clemson.edu/mba/files/2026/03/HDGKg06q-768x1024.jpeg" alt="Two women being very enthusiastic. Through that shared journey, Jessica and her classmates encouraged each other, celebrated successes together and developed lasting relationships.

Today, Jessica serves as a Success Coach at Tri-County Technical College, where she works closely with students to help them build the tools, confidence and direction they need to succeed. As the Director of Operations and Acting Executive Director of the Research and Education in Disease Diagnosis and Intervention (REDDI) Lab, Austin sits at the intersection of science, leadership and strategy. Alongside REDDI Lab founder Dr. Delphine Dean, an incredible staff, and supportive collaborators, Austin and his team are guiding one of the university’s most impactful research and clinical assets through its next phase of growth.

Austin is also a Research Assistant Professor in Clemson’s Department of Bioengineering, the same department from which he earned his Ph.D. His research background is rooted in novel radiation therapy approaches for treating triple-negative breast cancer. However, his journey with the REDDI Lab began not in leadership, but during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when he joined the lab as a technician. Over time, he advanced from Operations Manager to Director, taking on increasing responsibility for the lab’s day-to-day operations and long-term vision.

Following Austin Smothers’ appointment as Director of the REDDI Lab in July, he began working closely with university leadership to chart a clear and sustainable path forward for the lab. One of his first strategic conversations was with Robert Donato, Clemson University’s Chief Strategy Officer, to explore how the REDDI Lab could more effectively market its services internally and develop a long-term business plan centered on financial independence and self-sustainability. Drawing on his experience with similar initiatives, Donato suggested engaging MBA students and graduates to conduct a comprehensive set of economic, strategic and market-based analyses. Following this recommendation, Austin and the REDDI Lab partnered with Jamie Patterson, who played a pivotal role in translating the project scope into an opportunity for MBA students. Jamie shared the project widely within the MBA program, emphasizing the rare chance to gain hands-on experience in strategic management within what is essentially a start-up organization operating in the clinical diagnostics space.

With Jamie’s support, an exceptional project team was assembled, including Dr. René Schmauder, Ian Ammons, Mario Smith, Sandra Carlin, and Benjamin Lau. Together, the team conducted comprehensive financial analyses grounded in the REDDI Lab’s existing testing capabilities, while also exploring additional internal and external revenue opportunities. Their work culminated in a detailed strategic business plan designed to guide the lab toward financial sustainability while preserving its mission as a not-for-profit entity. The team presented their findings and recommendations to Provost Robert Jones and Doug Hallenbeck, Clemson University’s Vice President for Student Affairs. Reflecting on the project, Smothers expressed profound gratitude to Donato, Patterson, and the entire MBA team for their dedication and professionalism. Having spent his academic and professional career helping to build the REDDI Lab from the ground up, he found it especially meaningful to see others invest such care and effort into its future. Smothers also acknowledged the broader impact of the MBA program itself, which made this collaboration possible. He also would like to express gratitude to René and Ian for acting as the internal leadership of the team. By connecting students with real-world challenges faced by Clemson University assets, the program delivers great value to participants.

Austin Smothers has spent his academic and professional career helping build something truly unique at Clemson University. A May 2025 graduate of the MBA Corporate program through

Clemson University, Katelyn’s journey is one that extends far beyond the classroom. After

graduating from Anderson University in 2015 with a degree in elementary education, Katelyn

began what she thought would be her lifelong career as a teacher. However, during her very first

year in the classroom, her life changed dramatically when she became seriously ill and was

diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Forced to step away from teaching, she entered a long

period of uncertainty that would last nearly six years. Eventually, Katelyn knew one thing for

certain. If she was going to take the next step forward, she needed to further her education. She

had always dreamed of attending Clemson, and the flexibility of the online MBA program made

that dream possible. Enrolling in the Clemson MBA became not just an academic decision, but a

personal turning point.

When asked about the most impactful part of the Clemson MBA experience, Katelyn doesn’t

hesitate. “For me, it was the people and the incredible support from the program,” she shared.

Halfway through her MBA journey, Katelyn received life-altering news: she would be placed on

the heart transplant list. During this overwhelming moment, her advisor, Carson Watts,

immediately stepped in to help her navigate both her health crisis and her academic

responsibilities. Shortly after, Katelyn underwent a heart transplant while still actively enrolled

in the program. In February, she found herself completing coursework from her hospital bed.

Despite the challenges, her classmates and the Clemson MBA faculty rallied around her, offering

encouragement, flexibility and unwavering support every step of the way. Through these connections, Chase has secured internships with companies such as LPL Financial and NewRez, leveraging both Clemson resources and his veteran network to open doors.

Chase Carter hugging family

Chase’s impact extends beyond academics. In addition to her academic achievements, Erin plays a vital role at Clemson University as the Multimedia and Graphic Design Specialist for the Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine. Balancing a full-time position with graduate coursework, Erin exemplifies what it means to be driven, passionate, and forward-thinking. Her journey is one of growth, leadership, and a deep commitment to her craft and community.

Throughout the program, Erin has found several courses to be particularly influential in her development. One that stands out is Digital Media Planning, taught by Brian Stearns. “In this class, he brought in many guest speakers, which allowed us to learn directly from experts in the field,” she shares. As a residency weekend course, it also included participation from Brian’s team at RingoFire, which made the learning experience even more dynamic. Erin emphasized the value of these in-person weekends, saying, “Residency weekends allow face-to-face time with our cohorts, and that aspect enhances group projects and peer learning.”

Erin Thompson (center with white skirt) and her Digital Brand Communications cohort

One of the most impactful residency projects Erin participated in involved crafting a brand strategy for Glossier. This hands-on experience sharpened her strategic thinking and gave her a clear vision of how those insights could be applied in her professional work.

Erin’s Clemson journey began in a graphic design role, where she deepened her expertise in an area she initially explored during her undergraduate studies at Mississippi State University. That role was a stepping stone to her current position with the Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine, where she combines creativity with strategy. From that vision, the Clemson MarComm Young Professionals group was born. Erin helped launch the initiative and continues to lead it, organizing monthly lunches, helping coordinate university-wide events like the MarComm holiday party, and planning future professional development workshops.

Looking ahead, Erin has clear aspirations: she hopes to move into a leadership role that meshes marketing strategy and creative direction. Her goal is to contribute on a larger scale by combining her design background with high-level marketing insights that would ultimately shape campaigns that are as effective as they are visually compelling.

To those considering the program or just beginning their MBA journey, Erin offers this advice: “Clemson alumni are so willing to help you, so make sure to take advantage of networking and cohort relationships. Her passion for digital marketing was sparked during her undergraduate studies at Clemson University, where she minored in brand communications. “The Digital Brand Communications MBA seemed like the perfect continuation of the brand communication classes from undergrad, making it the ideal route into digital marketing,” she explained. She was drawn to the program because of the well-rounded curriculum and strong professional network in the Greenville area.

During her time in the program, Katie Kelly has been able to apply concepts from her Digital Content Strategy and Advanced Marketing classes to her full-time Digital Marketing Specialist role at Carolina Auto Auction. In her position, she manages the social media channels, implemented a new customer relationship management (CRM) system, and creates strategies for email, paid media, and advertising. “The Digital Content Strategy class helped me hone into the messaging I wanted to convey and develop a more thought-out social media strategy instead of relying on guesswork,” describes Kelly.

Katie Kelly and her Digital Brand Communications cohort

Advanced Marketing helped Katie understand the entire lifecycle of a business. During a residency weekend, Kelly and her classmates created and launched a business from scratch by conducting in-depth market research, identifying a target audience, defining product offerings, and developing a cohesive marketing strategy. Kelly reflected on past residency weekends, saying, “I love the cohort format and residency weekends because, during those 72 hours, you enjoy meaningful face-to-face interactions with your classmates, learn a lot about each other, and form great friendships.” She has been able to apply all these skills to her continuous learning of the digital marketing field.

Even with her busy schedule, Katie still finds time to pursue her passions for live music and photography. Katie works for two music publications where she has the opportunity to attend and photograph concerts, aligning her two passions. “I loved live music since I was 13 and later found my passion for photography because I love capturing physical memories,” explains Kelly. With determination and curiosity, Kelly connected with a concert photographer who mentored her to achieve her goals and pursue concert photography.

Concert photo taken by Katie

Katie Kelly aspires to advance within the digital marketing space and ultimately become a strategic marketing executive, with her MBA education to advance in leadership roles.
