Note from the Chair

November 2, 2022

Dear alumni and colleagues,

The future for advanced materials is bright at Clemson with recent board of trustee approval for Phase 2 of the Advanced Materials Innovation Complex (AMIC).  AMIC is scheduled to break ground next year and will serve as the new home of the MSE department.  In addition to this important infrastructure project, I am delighted to share some recent stories, highlighting program updates and achievements of our outstanding students and faculty.

We welcome one new faculty member, Dr. Dilpuneet Aidhy as an associate professor with expertise in computational modeling of inorganic materials including high entropy alloys and ceramics who joined us from the University of Wyoming.  We also offer congratulations to Dr. Thompson Mefford from MSE who was recently appointed as Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies in CECAS. Dr. Mefford was instrumental to the creation of a new “minor” in MSE which debuts this fall semester.

MSE Undergraduate student Arabella Hunter was one of the three Clemson recipients of the 2022 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, the premier and highly competitive national award for students who have the potential to advance research in mathematics, natural sciences and engineering. Former MSE undergraduate student Venkata “Anish” Chaluvadi, who is currently pursuing a MRes degree at the University of Cambridge was recently awarded a prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.

At the faculty level, congratulations to Dr. Luiz Jacobsohn who was selected to receive the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award for travel to Ghent University in Belgium to investigate persistent phosphors, a class of materials that does not need a power supply to emit light.

We look forward to the opportunities of the year ahead as we plan our transition to AMIC and continue to serve as the hub for the wide range of advanced materials initiatives across the university.

Thank you for your continued support and thank you to all the alumni who reconnected with the department at our recent homecoming tailgate!
