His Clemson journey began as an undergraduate, earning a B.S. in Ceramic Engineering in 1999. After graduation, he worked in Spartanburg in the fiber optic cable industry before returning to Clemson to pursue graduate studies. He earned his M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering in 2005.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since then, Dr. Hawkins has held a variety of research roles focused on optical fibers and optical materials, building extensive expertise in the field. In 2020, he earned his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering and joined the department as a Research Assistant Professor while also serving as director of the optical fiber laboratory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2026, Dr. Hawkins reached another significant milestone in his Clemson career with his promotion to <strong>Associate Research Professor<\/strong>. class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clemson University is ushering in a new era of advanced materials research, education and industry collaboration with the opening of its Advanced Materials Innovation Complex (AMIC), a state-of-the-art facility designed to accelerate discovery, prepare the next generation of scientists and engineers, and strengthen South Carolina\u2019s growing advanced materials economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Located in the heart of Clemson\u2019s main campus, the approximately 150,000-square-foot complex brings together researchers, students and industry partners working across materials science and engineering, chemistry, and chemical and biomolecular engineering. The $130 million facility is Clemson\u2019s most technologically advanced building to date and provides cutting-edge laboratories, classrooms and collaborative spaces intended to encourage multidisciplinary research and education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Advanced materials play a critical role in industries ranging from aerospace, transportation and electronics to health care and energy. By bringing expertise and sophisticated research capabilities together under one roof, AMIC positions Clemson to expand its impact in these fields while supporting the University\u2019s status as a Carnegie R1 research institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 300 research faculty and graduate students are expected to work in the complex, while more than 12,000 students are projected to use its laboratories annually. The facility also serves as the new home of Clemson\u2019s Department of Materials Science and Engineering, helping consolidate programs and researchers that historically operated in separate locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AMIC\u2019s potential to connect university research with industry is already attracting significant private support. The KYOCERA AVX Foundation has contributed $1 million to the complex, building on a longstanding relationship between Clemson and KYOCERA AVX, a global manufacturer of advanced electronic components with a major presence in South Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recognition of the gift, the building\u2019s main lobby will be named the KYOCERA AVX Lobby. The contribution supports Clemson\u2019s efforts to advance innovation, talent development and manufacturing while creating additional opportunities for collaboration between students, faculty and industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The partnership reflects the close connection between the research conducted at Clemson and the technologies needed by advanced manufacturers. Work within AMIC has the potential to contribute to advances in electronics, energy, manufacturing and other sectors while giving students hands-on experience with technologies and research methods they will encounter in their careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adding to AMIC\u2019s research capabilities is a new center dedicated to advanced X-ray imaging and characterization. The Materials Science and Engineering Center for X-ray Advanced Imaging of Materials Structures expands Clemson\u2019s ability to examine materials in ways that reveal features and behavior that cannot be seen from the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Advanced X-ray techniques can provide researchers with detailed information about the internal structure of materials while allowing many samples to remain intact. Such capabilities are increasingly important as scientists seek to understand how a material\u2019s internal structure influences its performance and how materials change during manufacturing or under real-world conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The center creates opportunities for researchers to apply advanced imaging to a wide range of materials and structures and to connect those observations with other characterization, computational and experimental methods. Its location within Clemson\u2019s broader advanced materials research environment is expected to foster collaboration across disciplines while also providing students access to sophisticated research tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together, the new X-ray imaging capabilities, AMIC\u2019s interdisciplinary research environment and support from partners such as KYOCERA AVX illustrate Clemson\u2019s broader strategy for advanced materials: connect fundamental research with practical applications, strengthen partnerships with industry and provide students with experience at the forefront of technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The investment also comes as advanced materials continue to grow in importance to South Carolina\u2019s economy. The state is home to hundreds of companies working in advanced materials and related manufacturing fields, creating demand for both technological innovation and a highly skilled workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AMIC is designed to help meet both needs. Students will gain experience in modern laboratories and participate in research, while faculty will have new opportunities to pursue discoveries that can move from the laboratory into commercial applications. Industry representatives toured MSE laboratories, learned more about available equipment and expertise, and engaged with faculty and department leaders in conversations about the future of materials science and engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A central goal of the workshop was to hear directly from industry partners. Their perspectives provided valuable insight into how MSE can continue to align its research, educational programs and student experiences with the evolving needs of the materials and manufacturing sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>Expanding the Impact of AMIC<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One key area of discussion focused on opportunities to expand industry use of <strong>AMIC\u2019s facilities and technical capabilities<\/strong>. With advanced laboratories, equipment and materials expertise, AMIC offers significant potential as a resource for companies seeking to address technical challenges, explore new ideas and collaborate on materials research and development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The workshop helped identify ways MSE and industry partners can make greater use of these resources while building relationships that support innovation and mutually beneficial research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>Preparing the Next Generation of Materials Engineers<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Industry participants also shared perspectives on the knowledge, skills and experiences that tomorrow\u2019s materials engineers will need to succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their feedback will help inform ongoing conversations about <strong>strengthening MSE\u2019s undergraduate curriculum and workforce preparation<\/strong>, including opportunities to connect classroom learning more closely with the technical challenges, professional skills and expectations students will encounter in industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By maintaining an active dialogue with employers, MSE can continue preparing graduates who are ready to contribute in a rapidly changing materials and manufacturing landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>Creating More Ways for Industry and Students to Connect<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The workshop also highlighted opportunities to deepen industry engagement in the student experience. A new study published by the Royal Society of Chemistry introduces an innovative technique for controlling <em>superconducting vortices<\/em>\u2014tiny whirlpools of electrical current that form inside certain materials at very low temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Superconductors are remarkable because they allow electricity to flow with zero resistance. However, their behavior is not always perfectly smooth. Under specific conditions, magnetic fields penetrate these materials in the form of vortices. These vortices are not just curiosities\u2014they play a crucial role in determining how superconductors function, especially in advanced technologies like quantum computing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study focuses on a material called FeSe, a type of multigap superconductor. Researchers developed a method using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip to physically \u201cpull\u201d and manipulate vortex lines within the material. This represents a significant breakthrough, as controlling vortex motion with precision has been a long-standing challenge in condensed matter physics. Interestingly, the research also highlights how imperfections in the material\u2014such as point defects or tiny wrinkles caused by strain\u2014can act as traps for these vortices. These features influence how vortices move and arrange themselves, effectively reshaping the local structure of the vortex lattice. By understanding and exploiting these interactions, scientists can gain deeper insight into the physics governing superconductors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This level of control opens exciting possibilities. For example, manipulating vortices could help researchers study complex phenomena like vortex braiding, which has implications for fault-tolerant quantum computing. More broadly, it brings scientists one step closer to designing superconducting systems with tailored properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In essence, this research demonstrates that even the smallest imperfections can become powerful tools in the quantum world.
