WCAG 2.1 is an international standard that explains how to make web content accessible to all users. This standard applies to all web content, including text, images, audio, multimedia, web pages, web applications, code, and markup.

Four Principles of WCAG 2.1

WCAG 2.1 is organized around four core principles. Digital content should be:

Perceivable

Operable

Understandable

Robust

Each principle includes testable criteria that can be measured at levels A, AA, or AAA, which determine whether content conforms to WCAG.

Consistency and Predictability

Consistency and predictability are important aspects of accessibility. Students should be able to navigate the course without confusion. It is best to keep module layouts consistent, use clear navigation, and avoid sudden layout changes.

Easy to Read and See

Course content should be readable and visually accessible for all students. One best practice is to use high color contrast between text and backgrounds. Another is to use readable font sizes and simple font styles. Additionally, content should be organized into headings, lists, and short paragraphs.

Alternative Formats

Students should be able to access media in multiple ways. It is advisable to add captions to videos, provide transcripts for audio content, include alt text for meaningful images, and ensure that linked files can be opened with assistive technology.

Standard Semantic Markup

Semantic markup helps assistive technologies understand and navigate course content. One way to support this is by properly using headings. This includes using built-in heading styles in Canvas, Word, and Google Docs and organizing content with headings in the correct order. Other ways to improve accessibility include using tables only for data, labeling links clearly, and avoiding manual text formatting.

If you have any questions, please schedule a consultation with us!

If you are interested in learning more, watch the full training here!

Upcoming Events

Workshop Wednesday: AI in Active Learning

June 17th, 1:30-2:30 PM

Facilitated by Digital Learning Strategist Dara Abimbade, PhD

Join this workshop to learn about how AI can be used to increase active learning! These considerations help influence the decision of what type of rubric to create.

In Canvas, there are two versions of rubrics: normal rubrics and enhanced rubrics. Normal rubrics favor analytic and checklist-style rubrics, which can make holistic rubrics more difficult to create. Enhanced rubrics feature an updated look and interface, making it easier to create holistic and unscored rubrics. You can also archive and preview enhanced rubrics.

If you are interested in learning more, watch the full training with Digital Learning Strategist James Butler here!

If you have any questions, please schedule a consultation with us!

Upcoming Events

Time-saving Canvas Tips

June 10th, 1:30-2:30 PM

Facilitated by Digital Learning Strategist Millie Tullis

Making the most of Canvas will free you up to focus on your teaching and students. They said that they struggle to reach out to professors, spending too much time looking up information instead of just asking for help. It is important for instructors to remain as open as possible for communication. Instructors should promote emailing, office hours, and other forms of engagement for students who need to ask questions.

Simple Organization

It is important that the organization of your Canvas course is easy to understand and navigate. Make sure that important stuff is on the Home Page and/or in Modules, not hidden in Files. It is key that instructors give the Modules some order that makes sense based on the chapter or lesson number. The overall layout of the course should be apparent from day one, as predictability can go a long way toward making Canvas easier to navigate.

Clear Structure

Students prefer having all Modules and assignments available from the start of the course rather than locked behind specific time periods. A daily schedule or task calendar can also be a helpful supplement to the Simple Syllabus. Additionally, instructors should avoid adding assignments that are not listed on the syllabus or the schedule. These unexpected assignments can cause stress, confusion, and anxiety to students.

If you have any questions or if you want to learn more, please contact us!

Upcoming Events

WCAG 2.1: What does it mean for your course?

June 3rd, 1:30-2:30 PM

Facilitated by Browning Blair

Join this session to learn about the new federal standards for online accessibility! We will look at all of the major changes and what to expect from the updated version. Assignments from the old integration should be automatically converted to the new integration. First, in the Assignments tab of your course, click the Assignment Settings button. Then, click Turnitin from the dropdown menu. This will open a window where you can create Turnitin assignments.

Here, you can upload a template, which will be automatically excluded from the similarity score. Additionally, you can upload a Turnitin rubric. However, this rubric will only exist in Turnitin and not in Canvas.

After creating the assignment, you will see it in the Assignments tab in your course. If you click on it, you will see the familiar Turnitin inbox. The UI has been updated, but it still contains the same information. Here, you can also make changes to the assignment by pressing the Edit button.

Feedback Studio

In Feedback Studio, you can view student submissions in Turnitin. You can see their similarity score, AI writing score, and anything else the system flagged. In the new update, the location of the AI writing score has been moved to the top of the page. The AI writing score can help determine whether a submission was written or paraphrased using AI. Blue highlighting represents AI writing, and purple highlighting represents AI paraphrasing.

The AI writing score should be used as additional information and should not solely determine whether a student has violated academic integrity standards. No AI detection tool is fully reliable, so it should not be used as the sole basis for academic integrity decisions. Instead, it should be treated as a starting point. The FAQ link in Feedback Studio answers a variety of questions about how the detection works and what it detects.

The flags tool determines whether something unusual is going on with the submission, such as suspicious characters or hidden text that may be trying to interfere with the AI detector. However, the tool can produce false positives, so make sure to review any flags carefully.

Grading Documents

If you set up Turnitin assignments using the method discussed previously, you will no longer be able to use SpeedGrader to grade them. Instead, grading will be done in Feedback Studio using the grade box at the top of the page. It operates the same way as SpeedGrader, just in a new location.

Second Method for Creating a Turnitin Assignment

Another way to create a Turnitin assignment is by clicking the + Assignment button in the Assignments tab. When creating an assignment with a file submission required, you will now be able to add a document processing app after the Assign Access section. Turnitin will be the only app option. Your assignment will then be created with Turnitin.

Using this second method, you can grade the assignments as normal in SpeedGrader.

If you are interested in learning more, you can find the recorded quick hits session here!

Upcoming Events

Workshop Wednesday: Designing Effective Rubrics in Canvas

May 27th, 1:30 PM-2:30 PM

Facilitated by Digital Learning Strategist James Butler

Join this workshop to learn about designing effective rubrics! When using a points-based system, you do not need to assign weights to different groups of assignments. Instead, you can adjust how many points each assignment is worth in the Assignments tab of your course.

When using a percentage-based system, it is important to assign a percentage to each assignment group. If grade weights are already set up, you will not be prompted to configure them again in the Assignment settings. To set up grade weights, click the three-dot menu and select “Assignment Group Weights.” From there, you can adjust the weights for each group.

Course Settings

Under the Course Details section in the Settings tab on the left-hand navigation bar of your Canvas course, you can change your course grading scheme. By default, Canvas uses a standard grading scheme, but you can adjust it to your preferences. You can modify the grade ranges for A’s, B’s, C’s, and so on.

Grade Book

The gradebook displays all individual assignments. After these, you will see the assignment group grades. Using the search bar, you can look up any student in the course and view their assignment grades. You can also use it to search for specific assignments. Using the filters, you can sort by assignment groups, student groups, status, submissions, and start or end dates.

The gradebook settings can significantly impact how you manage grading. For example, you can apply automatic late penalties to assignments submitted after the deadline. Additionally, you can adjust the grade posting policy by choosing whether grades are posted automatically or manually. You can also enable a final grade override in the settings, which can be useful for adding extra credit to a student’s overall grade.

Another way to add extra credit is by using SpeedGrader. First, click on an individual quiz in the gradebook, then open SpeedGrader. Once there, you can add extra credit points in the Fudge Points section. Alternatively, you can create an extra credit assignment within your assignment groups and manually enter points for it in the gradebook.

Want to learn more? With shorter terms, accelerated schedules, and students who are often juggling jobs or travel, setting yourself (and your students) up for success from the start is key. Here are a few essential steps to take before your course goes live:

1. Get Familiar with Your LMS Early

Log in as soon as you have access to Canvas. Join the Clemson Hub for Adjunct Instructors in Canvas (CHAI) for basics on course building, Canvas tools, and Clemson resources for instructors and students.

2. Set the Tone with a Welcoming Message

A short, friendly welcome email or announcement goes a long way in humanizing your online presence. Let students know who you are, what to expect, and how to reach you. This can ease anxieties and create a more connected class environment—even if you never meet in person.

3. Review (and Possibly Revise) the Schedule

Summer courses move fast, and students will appreciate a well-paced, predictable schedule. If you’re inheriting a course, double-check the due dates and make sure the workload is realistic for the compressed timeline. Review how the course is structured, check for broken links or outdated materials, and make sure your navigation is clear. Consider spacing out larger assignments and giving students frequent touchpoints.

4. Prioritize Clarity and Accessibility

Your materials should be easy to navigate, clearly labeled, and accessible to all learners. Use descriptive text for links and images, offer multiple formats for key content (e.g., captions for videos), and avoid cluttered design. Accessibility isn’t just about compliance—it’s about good teaching.

5. Join Our Adjunct Meet Up at 2:30pm on 6/3

Connect with others across Clemson to share experiences and either reflect on the beginning of the Summer I session or look ahead to the start of Summer II. Register here for the Zoom link to join in!

Bonus: Make It Your Own (Where You Can)

Even if the course was designed by someone else, look for small ways to add your voice—through announcements, video intros, discussion prompts, or assignment feedback. They offer flexibility, accessibility, and a lower barrier to entry compared to traditional office hours. It’s important for instructors to host online office hours that foster meaningful student engagement, effective communication, and quality learning. In this post, we’ll explore some best practices and tips for running successful online office hours that benefit both you and your students.

Scheduling

Scheduling is a crucial aspect of online office hours. Instructors should aim to schedule office hours at times when most students are able to attend, avoiding peak class times when students are busiest. The goal is to maximize student attendance. A good practice is to survey your students to determine the best time for standing weekly office hours. While you may not be able to perfectly accommodate everyone’s schedule, office hours will still be accessible to as many students as possible. Having an established time when learners know you will be available eliminates the barrier for them to schedule with you individually.

Another effective scheduling practice is to offer students the opportunity to schedule 1-on-1 online office hours with you. Whether via email or by signing up for a time slot, allowing students to meet with you outside of standard office hours can help accommodate their busy schedules. Instructors can use free online booking tools to share available time slots, allowing students to sign up for a time that works best for them. If you have enabled Zoom in your Canvas course, you can set times in the Zoom tab to let students book with you directly.

Preparation

Instructors should prepare for office hours, just like students do. Students will come prepared with questions that they have regarding class content. A good option is to give students the option to submit a question beforehand, so you can know exactly what to prepare for and how to instruct that student in online office hours.

Additionally, logistical preparation is crucial for successful online office hours. Ensure that students know when office hours begin and end, where to find the link to join, and that the link is working. Try to keep the link in the same place and start office hours at the same time every week, such as on the Home Page or in the Zoom tab of Canvas. Consistency makes it easier for students to build their schedules and develop a routine. Changing the schedule or link each week can confuse students and negatively impact attendance.

Conduct

Choose a professional, quiet location, such as a home office or desk, to hold office hours. Avoid distractions in the background, such as barking dogs or a loud television, to help students stay focused without being distracted by what’s happening behind you.

Instructors should be open and welcoming during online office hours. Just like in-person office hours, students will want to connect with you and build a relationship. Online office hours provide an excellent opportunity for students to establish a personal rapport with you, which might enable you to serve as a future reference or to share further educational opportunities. Take time to talk with them about topics beyond just class content. Ask about what they are studying, their dream career, where they are from, or their hobbies outside of school.

As an instructor, it is important to be an active listener during online office hours. Listen attentively to each student’s concerns and fully address their questions to provide the best assistance possible. It’s also a good idea to note down the student’s name and the details of the conversation. This way, both you and the student can refer back to the discussion if a question arises again. By actively listening, you demonstrate to students that you are invested in their learning and success in the course.

There are additional tips available about online office hours on UNE Online’s blog as well.

If you want to discuss any of these practices or learn how to implement online office hours, schedule a consult with one of us at Clemson Online!

Upcoming Events

Kaltura Training Series

Getting Started with Kaltura: Tuesday, May 5th, 3-4 PM

This training will cover how to access Kaltura, upload videos into Kaltura, create videos with Kaltura Express Capture and Kaltura Capture, and embed Kaltura videos into your Canvas courses.
