Canvas makes it easy to set up. Here are some effective strategies for designing peer reviews to get the most out of your students.

Strengths of Peer Review Work

Excellent application of social constructivism learning theory

Potential for building a sense of community

Supports reflective learning and critical analysis

Opportunity for negotiating various perspectives

Revision benefits for learners and instructors

Defining Effective Peer Review Designs

An important aspect of effective peer review design is assignment structure. It is key for instructors to inform students which assignments involve peer review, outline the submission timeline, and explain how points will be allocated. Additionally, it can be helpful to provide students with a rubric to complete during their peer review, allowing them to check off each criterion as they go.

Role expectations are also important in peer review. The key roles include the assessor, the assessee, and the instructor. The relationship between these three roles is crucial for an effective peer review process. The assessor should understand the goals of the feedback they are expected to provide, while the instructor should offer clear guidance on what that feedback should include. The assessee can help guide the assessor by indicating the type of feedback they would like or the areas they want emphasized. It is critical that these roles are clearly defined early in the process and structured in a way that is most effective for both you and your students.

Want to learn more? It is often harder for students to remain motivated online than in face-to-face lectures. Here are some practical tools, tips, and best practices for increasing motivation through online tools.

Key Drivers of Student Motivation in Online Learning

Autonomy

Autonomy refers to giving students a sense of ownership and choice in their learning. Providing opportunities for students to personalize their learning experience is important. When students feel ownership over their experience, they become more engaged. Allowing students to bring their own experiences, knowledge, and skills into the learning process helps them become more invested. As a result, they feel less isolated because they are active participants in the learning journey rather than simply following the instructor.

Competence

Competence involves helping students believe that they can successfully accomplish the tasks you are teaching them. This confidence is built when students experience “small wins,” which allow their motivation and confidence to continue growing. One effective way to support this is by gamifying your course. For example, having students compete in mini-games can help build their sense of competence.

Belonging

In an online learning environment, students can often feel isolated and alone. It is important for instructors to help them feel valued and connected to others or to the class content. Instructors should provide students with opportunities to interact and have meaningful conversations about what they are learning. Collaboration among students in the class can build a sense of community and belonging, helping to prevent feelings of isolation.

Relevance

Relevance is especially important in an online learning environment. Instructors should ensure that what they are teaching matters to their students. Students tend to learn better when the material is connected to things they care about. Instructors can strengthen this connection by providing context and explaining how the content may be relevant to students’ future careers.

Strategies that can Improve Motivation

Make the “Why” Explicit

Explain to students why what they are learning matters. Include examples of how the material applies in the real world. Show how what they are learning can be relevant to their future careers. Build this sense of “why” into all of your course content.

Include Early Wins

Create opportunities for early wins. Instructors should build students’ confidence in what they are learning over time. Low-stakes assignments can help spark their interest and kick-start the learning process. Through repeated trial and error, students can improve their understanding and skills. Instructors should also provide effective feedback to support these early wins.

Add Meaningful Choice

Let students choose their path to learning. Give students options for how they can submit assignments or what they can create for a project. When students are given choices, they are more likely to present their work using the medium that suits them best.

Structure Interaction with Peers

It is important for instructors to build opportunities for interaction into their courses. Creating opportunities for students to engage in dialogue or collaborate on assignments can make them more invested in what they are learning. A sense of belonging can significantly improve motivation. Students want to feel that they are part of the learning process rather than isolated.

Want to learn more? Here is a full video tutorial on how to use this checker.

To check the accessibility of any files included in the course, you can use the Yuja Panorama accessibility checker. Just like the Canvas checker, you can scan your whole course at once for all included files. Start by finding the Panorama button in the course navigation bar. It will automatically generate a course report, which you can use to identify accessibility issues. It will also instruct you on how to fix them.

Additional Resources

We have many additional resources available on our website, both for Accessibility Services and Quick Guides and Accessibility Resources.

Canvas Accessibility Week Recordings

From March 9th to March 12th, Clemson Online celebrated Canvas Accessibility Week. But how can we design discussion board assignments that keep students actively engaged in conversation throughout the semester? Here are several pedagogical approaches to create active discussion boards in your courses.

Pedagogical Benefits of Discussion Boards

Discussion boards offer valuable benefits for a course when well-designed. They help foster community and connections among students, especially in online courses. They provide a space for students to engage in meaningful discussions about course material. Additionally, discussion boards encourage the development of collaboration, analytical, and critical thinking skills, which are valuable for students’ future careers. Discussion boards are a student-centered activity that gives students an opportunity to share their voices and opinions.

Best Practices for Discussion Boards

Outline Clear Expectations

When creating discussion boards for students, it’s important to set clear expectations for how you want them to engage. Be sure to specify what they should post, when to post, and how much to post. Clarify how the discussion board will be graded or if it will be optional. Students need to know whether they will be graded using a rubric or a point-based breakdown.

Create More Meaningful Prompts

Consider asking students to do something different in each discussion board. For example, if the first discussion board asks students to apply concepts, the next could have them solve a problem, and the one after that could involve annotating a reading. A strong variety can help prevent fatigue. Additionally, multimodal prompts can be beneficial for students. Encourage them to submit videos, images, presentations, or audio to add variety to the discussion boards.

Consistent Design

While you do not want to assign the same discussion prompt every week, it’s important to establish a consistent pattern. Set consistent due dates for initial posts and replies, such as having the initial post due on Monday at 10:00 PM and the reply due on Wednesday at 10:00 PM. This consistency helps students manage their time effectively.

Strong Connection to Course Materials

Discussion boards should have an explicit connection to course materials and learning objectives. This connection provides students with added motivation to participate and helps them learn more in the process.

Control Sharing Expectations

It’s important to set clear guidelines for how much sharing is required from students on discussion boards early in the process. Sometimes, students can overshare and provide overly long responses, which can lead to an overwhelming discussion board that’s difficult for instructors to manage. Model for students what a concise and effective response looks like.

Include a Netiquette Policy

Students will not interact the same way they do in other online settings, such as social media. Establish a code of conduct for how students should communicate within discussion boards to create a supportive learning environment.

Get Involved as the Instructor

As the instructor, regularly participate in discussion boards to maintain an active presence with your students. Respond to several of the students’ posts to guide them, letting them know whether they’re on the right track or need correction. Encourage students to think critically, dive deeper, and draw connections between each other’s posts.

Helpful Discussion Board Settings

Make group discussion boards to build collaboration skills and strengthen the sense of community among students. This can also be helpful for breaking up large classes into manageable discussions.

Allow anonymous or partially anonymous posting for course Q&A, especially when students may feel embarrassed to ask questions.

Require an original post before seeing the full discussion when appropriate to get initial responses that do not simply rely on other posts.

Encourage students to adjust their notification settings to ensure they don’t miss any updates.

Want to learn more? Additionally, you can add it to the left-side course navigation menu through the Course Settings tab. Once inside Course Analytics, you will see four different tabs: Course Grade, Weekly Online Activity, Students, and Reports.

Course Grade

In this tab, you can see an interactive chart with individual grades per assignment and the average course grade per assignment. Using the bar at the top, you can filter to add or subtract things from the chart like individual students or sections. Clicking on the dots on the interactive chart will display even more helpful information, such as the low score, high score, missing, and late submissions. Additionally, here you can find the “Message Students Who” button. This will give you the ability to message students based on criteria you set. This message will be sent individually to student inboxes.

Weekly Online Activity

This tab displays trends in student engagement over time, week by week. It shows average page views and average participation numbers per week. These numbers are helpful to notice any trends of disengagement among students in your course. Much like the course grade tool, you can filter items on the chart using the bar at the top. Clicking on the dots on the display will show you the individual students who have viewed and participated in your course. Additionally, here you can access “Message Students Who” tab by clicking the large numbers under page views and participation. Again, this tool will allow you to message students based on different criteria like those who participated and viewed. Towards the bottom of the page, you can see all the resources in your course based on views and participation.

Students

This tab displays all the students in your course alongside key summary data. It shows each individual student’s course grade, on-time percentage, last participation date, last page view, total views, and total participation. Clicking on a student’s name will display additional detailed information. You will see an interactive chart showing that student’s assignment performance, similar to the Course Grade tool described above. Additionally, you can view their weekly activity and any previous communication with that student.

Reports

This tab allows you to generate and download CSV files for various types of reports. These reports include missing assignments, late assignments, excused assignments, the class roster, and overall course activity. You can filter the report by a specific student or by date range.

Want to learn more? Below are some best practices for online feedback, along with practical tips and tools to help save time when providing feedback to students through Canvas.

The goals to keep in mind when creating effective feedback are trust, connection, authenticity, and consistency. These goals help students build confidence in your course and understand how what they learn can support their future endeavors.

How can instructors encourage feedback literacy among students?

Here are some ways to encourage feedback literacy with students:

Encourage students to focus on building skills, not just receiving a grade.

Provide constructive feedback.

Scaffold learning with smaller assignments that build toward a larger one.

Use a respectful tone when giving feedback.

Encourage goal setting.

Practical Design Strategies

Here are some design strategies you can implement in your course to make the most effective use of feedback:

Create a feedback explanation page that outlines the goals of feedback and clarifies expectations for both students and instructors.

Use Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT) by clearly communicating the purpose of each assignment, the skills students will develop, and how their work will be evaluated.

Tools in Canvas

Canvas has built-in tools that can make providing effective feedback easier. The Rubrics tool in Canvas offers two methods of giving feedback: analytic and holistic. Analytic rubrics are more detailed, breaking down how a student did or did not earn points for each aspect of an assignment. Holistic rubrics evaluate the assignment as a whole and assign a single overall grade.

SpeedGrader is another tool within Canvas that supports effective feedback. It includes annotation features that allow instructors to write directly on a student’s submitted document, enabling students to review comments in context. SpeedGrader also includes a comment box on the side, which is an ideal place to provide overall or summary feedback on a submission. Additionally, instructors can use the built-in screen recording tool in SpeedGrader to record personalized video or audio feedback for a student’s submission.

Want to learn more? AI can be leveraged to transform bite-sized lessons into personalized learning experiences. Whether you’re designing learning modules or student activities, here are some practical strategies to make every 60-second learning moment both meaningful and measurable. You can create micro-lessons, recommend just-in-time resources, and scaffold micro-assessments that contribute to true mastery.

What is Microlearning?

Microlearning is often perceived as merely short videos; however, this is not the full picture. Microlearning is defined by several key characteristics. It targets a single objective, rather than multiple outcomes. It is designed to be small, complete, and easy to use. Microlearning is practical and action-based, involving the application of a concept, practice of a step, or correction of a misconception. It is not a replacement for deep learning but rather a supportive tool that enhances it.

Why have Microlearning?

Microlearning offers several benefits that make it an appealing tool. It helps manage cognitive load and prevents overload. It can improve retention through repetition and is particularly effective for exam preparation. Additionally, microlearning is easier to update compared to larger lessons.

Where does Microlearning fit in?

There are several locations where microlearning is best served. These include:

module “micro checkpoints”

pre-class readiness checks

post-lecture review

exam prep modules

How can AI help Microlearning?

Generative AI tools can assist instructors with Microlearning. Here’s how:

Draft and generate micro-lesson scripts and quickly create questions

Create and rewrite alternative examples and rewrite work for clarity and accessibility

Suggest feedback for common errors

While AI can be incredibly helpful for instructors, it’s important to remain cautious. AI is not always perfect and may make simple mistakes. Instructors should verify the accuracy of the AI’s output, ensure the appropriate tone and context are used, and confirm that the content aligns with learning objectives.

If you would like to use generative AI to create Microcontent, try out our template that we have created for assistance!

If you are looking for generative AI tools to use, here are some of the ones we recommend:

Mini Course Generator

Articulate 360

Synthesia

Want to learn more? It is a great tool for storing and uploading online lectures. Below is an overview of some of the important things you can do within Kaltura, along with tips to improve your experience:

Editing

Editing your videos within Kaltura can be very helpful. In Kaltura, you can click the pencil icon on each of your videos to edit them. Using the editing tools, you can improve accessibility by reviewing the accuracy of transcripts and captions. You can also edit the video itself by cutting out portions of your recording that you wish to exclude.

Link your Zoom Account

A simple yet very helpful tip is to make sure your Kaltura and Zoom accounts are linked. Once linked, your Zoom recordings will automatically be uploaded to Kaltura. To link these accounts, please email us at IThelp@clemson.edu.

Engagement

When using videos in your course, it is important that they are engaging for students. Kaltura offers several tools to help improve video engagement. Using chapters to break up long videos, adding hotspots to link additional resources, creating quizzes to make lecture videos more interactive, and embedding videos directly into your Canvas pages can all enhance engagement. Breaking content into shorter, more digestible videos is especially effective. Be mindful of students’ ability to focus and stay engaged.

Adding Videos to your Course

Adding your Kaltura media to your Canvas course is very simple. You can add videos anywhere a page uses the Rich Content Editor. Once in the Rich Content Editor, click the plug icon and select Embed Kaltura Media. From there, you can choose which Kaltura video you would like to embed and adjust the settings to your preference. Any updates you make to a video in Kaltura will automatically be reflected in Canvas. You can also reuse Kaltura videos multiple times within a Canvas course. We recommend creating videos on frequently used topics so students can revisit and review them as needed.

Do a Test Run

We recommend testing out the Kaltura software and familiarizing yourself with it. Make sure you understand the basics and feel comfortable using the platform before creating longer videos for your course.

Want to learn more?
