Clemson University is committed to promoting accessibility across all aspects of teaching and learning. As an instructor, you are responsible for ensuring your course meets accessibility standards. Fortunately, Canvas provides tools that make it easier to meet these standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Digital Accessibility?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Michelle Tuten of Clemson Online, accessibility is the practice of designing better user experiences for everyone by first improving the experience of people with disabilities. As instructors, you should proactively create content, products, and environments that people with a wide range of hearing, vision, mobility, and cognitive abilities can use, understand, contribute to (when applicable), and benefit from. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Digital Accessibility for Canvas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Teaching Tips for Digital Accessibility <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check for multiple means of access<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seek to remove barriers to accessibility early<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reducing barriers does not reduce rigor <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accessible Text<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Textbooks, articles, Canvas pages, PowerPoint text, assignment descriptions, PDFs, and external resources should all contain accessible text. Be sure to use properly formatted headings and lists to improve accessibility. It is also important to create meaningful hyperlinks instead of displaying full URLs, as they are more helpful for students using assistive technologies. Additionally, avoid using color alone to convey meaning, as this can create barriers for individuals with color vision deficiencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accessible Audio and Video <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For any videos in your course, ensure that synchronized captions are available and accurate. Additionally, provide a complete transcript for all audio-only content so that it is accessible to all students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accessible Images<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To ensure that all images in your Canvas course are accessible, include alt text or an image description for any pedagogically important images, such as infographics or demonstrations that support learning. Alt text is not required for purely decorative images. Additionally, use actual text instead of images of text whenever possible, as screen readers may not interpret images of text correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accessible Tables <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tables can be useful in a Canvas course, but they can also create accessibility challenges if not used properly. Avoid using tables for page layout, as they can cause problems for screen readers and keyboard navigation. When using tables to present data, ensure they include clear titles and properly designated header rows or columns that accurately describe the content. Additionally, avoid merging cells whenever possible, as doing so can make tables more difficult for assistive technologies to interpret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accessible Math<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Accessible math is an increasingly important aspect of digital accessibility. To create accessible math content in Canvas, enter equations directly into the Rich Content Editor (RCE) equation editor or use MathML. Recommended practices in other formats are being updated frequently, so reach out to us if you would like more information on how to increase the accessibility of your math content. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accessibility Checkers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canvas has a built-in accessibility checker that scans all content entered into the Rich Content Editor on Pages, Assignments, Quizzes, etc. It will evaluate most of the features discussed above and flag any errors detected. The Panorama accessibility checker also scans attached files for accessibility in addition to Canvas content. Currently, these updates apply only when the relevant feature options are enabled through the Settings menu, but they will be active by default in the fall semester. Here are the key changes and how they may affect your Canvas course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized wp-container-content-885d38d7\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.clemson.edu\/online\/files\/2024\/02\/Untitled-19.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2827\" style=\"width:535px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.clemson.edu\/online\/files\/2024\/02\/Untitled-19.png 900w, https:\/\/blogs.clemson.edu\/online\/files\/2024\/02\/Untitled-19-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.clemson.edu\/online\/files\/2024\/02\/Untitled-19-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.clemson.edu\/online\/files\/2024\/02\/Untitled-19-768x768.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Allocation Engine <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canvas has redesigned the Peer Review Allocation Engine to automatically pair reviewers with available submissions instead of matching students directly. This change allows peer reviews to continue being assigned until the assignment&#8217;s Available Until date, giving instructors greater flexibility when managing late submissions. Instructors can also manually customize reviewer pairings using Allocation Rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Independent Due Dates and Points<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peer reviews now function as sub-assignments with their own due dates and point values, separate from the parent assignment. This allows instructors to set a distinct deadline for completing peer reviews and assign points specifically for the review activity. These peer review items also appear independently throughout Canvas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Student Experience <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students now see the main assignment and its peer reviews as separate items. If an instructor requires students to submit their work before reviewing, they must do so before accessing their assigned peer reviews. When multiple reviews are assigned, students can navigate between them using a dropdown menu and complete each review through the Submission to Review tab, rubric tools, and comment features. After completing all reviews, students submit them collectively and receive a confirmation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Instructor Experience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instructors benefit from an enhanced SpeedGrader interface that displays completed peer review rubrics, scores, ratings, and comments. They can also assign their own score to each peer review and navigate between reviews more easily. Importantly, the grading workflow for the original assignment remains unchanged, preserving familiar processes while adding clarity and structure to peer review grading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New Canvas Resource! Navigation Menu Glossary<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have created a <a href=\"https:\/\/clemson.box.com\/shared\/static\/7lowgx1wcsqjh6jpdljg9wapjgfrge4j.pdf\">Canvas Navigation Menu glossary<\/a> for instructor use. This document provides a list of all the items available in the course navigation menu within Clemson University&#8217;s Canvas environment and how they might be used in your course. Test runs often point out areas that could cause a problem during recording. Testing your camera, lighting, microphone, and other devices can prevent mistakes in recording. Consider how you look in the video and how you sound. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, make sure that all the proper software is working prior to recording. We recommend recording in either Kaltura Capture or Zoom. If you would like to automatically upload all of your Zoom recordings into Kaltura, you can create a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clemson.edu\/ccit\/it-help\/\">CCIT help ticket<\/a> to link your accounts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Video recording can be the toughest part of the process. If you are saying complicated words, practice pronouncing them prior to filming the final product. You may need a couple of takes of recording to iron out any mistakes. The recording does not have to be perfect on the first try, so it is ok to make mistakes. When recording, avoid muttering so that students can hear you clearly. Also, avoid using any chronological information to avoid dating your video and allow for it to be reused at another time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Target and Outline <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Begin with the hardest topics and build out from there. It can be good to go back and add Kaltura quizzes to the difficult topics to help students reinforce those difficult topics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creating an online of the lecture prior to recording is very helpful. In these outlines, you should be identifying information in three tiers: Essential, Very Important, and Important. If the information does not fall within these categories, then it should be removed. This helps shorten the video and avoid information overload. One benefit of lecture videos is that learners can pause, restart, and replay sections if needed, so you can keep your focus on essential information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use outlines to help plan out your recording. Include timestamps of certain information, add a to-do list of things that you want to make sure are discussed in the recording, and identify where in the recording you can add Hotspots or quiz questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pedagogical Theories in Video Recording <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are multiple pedagogical theories to consider when recording videos for your course. First of which is Cognitive Load Theory. Cognitive Load Theory is the amount of working memory resources that a learner has available, which can impact how effective teaching techniques are. Removing information or breaking information up into multiple, smaller videos can ease the cognitive load.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another important theory is Active Learning theory. This theory supports providing opportunities for students to process course information by doing something with the materials. A good way to do this in your recordings is by including hotspots and Kaltura quizzes for your students to interact with. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kaltura Features<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Certain Kaltura features can be of great assistance when it comes to creating effective educational videos. One of the best features of Kaltura is the ability to create chapters along the video timeline. These chapters in your videos give students more autonomy in their learning process, allowing them to move around to different topics within the video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kaltura quizzes are a great feature for active learning in your course. You can create True\/false, multiple-choice, or short-answer questions for your videos. This strategy builds transferable skills and self-direction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To incorporate AI into this strategy, have it generate a practical framework or plan for solving the problem rather than providing the solution itself. Instead of asking AI to produce the final answer, use it to create an open-ended structure that guides the student&#8217;s thinking. Students can then fill in the details, apply their knowledge, and work through the process to arrive at their own solution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Case-Based Learning \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Learners analyze a realistic scenario and defend a decision. This works because it successfully bridges theory and practice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When integrated into this strategy, AI can serve as a digital consultant. Students can use AI to explore hypothetical questions and test ideas, provided they are using effective prompts. AI can also help synthesize and condense information, allowing students to develop a concise summary of their decision and the reasoning behind it within the given scenario.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inquiry-Based Learning \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students investigate a question and construct findings. This strategy develops scientific\/critical reasoning. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In this strategy, AI can serve as a research assistant. It can generate investigative questions, identify potential data sources, help organize findings, and suggest categories of information to collect. The QM Rubric focuses specifically on course design with an emphasis on student learning. To earn certification, courses must meet standards in eight key areas, including learning objectives, assessments, instructional materials, learning activities, and accessibility. Clemson Online is responsible for conducting initial course reviews internally with the course representative before sending them out for an official review. WCAG 2.1 is an international standard that explains how to make web content accessible to all users. This standard applies to all web content, including text, images, audio, multimedia, web pages, web applications, code, and markup. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Four Principles of WCAG 2.1<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WCAG 2.1 is organized around four core principles. Digital content should be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Perceivable <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Operable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understandable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Robust<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each principle includes testable criteria that can be measured at levels A, AA, or AAA, which determine whether content conforms to WCAG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Consistency and Predictability <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consistency and predictability are important aspects of accessibility. Students should be able to navigate the course without confusion. It is best to keep module layouts consistent, use clear navigation, and avoid sudden layout changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Easy to Read and See<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Course content should be readable and visually accessible for all students. One best practice is to use high color contrast between text and backgrounds. Another is to use readable font sizes and simple font styles. Additionally, content should be organized into headings, lists, and short paragraphs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alternative Formats <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students should be able to access media in multiple ways. It is advisable to add captions to videos, provide transcripts for audio content, include alt text for meaningful images, and ensure that linked files can be opened with assistive technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Standard Semantic Markup <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Semantic markup helps assistive technologies understand and navigate course content. One way to support this is by properly using headings. This includes using built-in heading styles in Canvas, Word, and Google Docs and organizing content with headings in the correct order. These considerations help influence the decision of what type of rubric to create.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Canvas, there are two versions of rubrics: normal rubrics and enhanced rubrics. Normal rubrics favor analytic and checklist-style rubrics, which can make holistic rubrics more difficult to create. Enhanced rubrics feature an updated look and interface, making it easier to create holistic and unscored rubrics. The session was an opportunity to learn and ask questions about the experiences of neurodivergent students at Clemson. We asked questions about their experience utilizing Canvas and other online learning features. Here are some of our takeaways from the session based on their feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Communication<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of the students said to prioritize clear communication. They said that they struggle to reach out to professors, spending too much time looking up information instead of just asking for help. It is important for instructors to remain as open as possible for communication. Instructors should promote emailing, office hours, and other forms of engagement for students who need to ask questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Simple Organization<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is important that the organization of your Canvas course is easy to understand and navigate. Make sure that important stuff is on the Home Page and\/or in Modules, not hidden in Files. It is key that instructors give the Modules some order that makes sense based on the chapter or lesson number. The overall layout of the course should be apparent from day one, as predictability can go a long way toward making Canvas easier to navigate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Clear Structure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students prefer having all Modules and assignments available from the start of the course rather than locked behind specific time periods. A daily schedule or task calendar can also be a helpful supplement to the Simple Syllabus. Additionally, instructors should avoid adding assignments that are not listed on the syllabus or the schedule. We will look at all of the major changes and what to expect from the updated version. Assignments from the old integration should be automatically converted to the new integration. If any assignments are missing, <a href=\"https:\/\/scheduler.zoom.us\/f\/spsf5ok7\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/scheduler.zoom.us\/f\/spsf5ok7\">please contact us<\/a>, and we can get that sorted out for you.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creating a Turnitin Assignment <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two different ways to create a Turnitin assignment. First, in the <strong>Assignments<\/strong> tab of your course, click the <strong>Assignment Settings<\/strong> button. Then, click <strong>Turnitin<\/strong> from the dropdown menu. This will open a window where you can create Turnitin assignments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"375\" height=\"291\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.clemson.edu\/online\/files\/2026\/05\/Turnitin-in-Assignments.png\" alt=\"Turnitin option from assignment setting menu\" class=\"wp-image-3848\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.clemson.edu\/online\/files\/2026\/05\/Turnitin-in-Assignments.png 375w, https:\/\/blogs.clemson.edu\/online\/files\/2026\/05\/Turnitin-in-Assignments-300x233.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.clemson.edu\/online\/files\/2026\/05\/Turnitin-in-Assignments-150x116.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here, you can upload a template, which will be automatically excluded from the similarity score. Additionally, you can upload a Turnitin rubric. However, this rubric will only exist in Turnitin and not in Canvas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After creating the assignment, you will see it in the <strong>Assignments<\/strong> tab in your course. If you click on it, you will see the familiar Turnitin inbox. The UI has been updated, but it still contains the same information. Here, you can also make changes to the assignment by pressing the <strong>Edit<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Feedback Studio<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Feedback Studio, you can view student submissions in Turnitin. You can see their similarity score, AI writing score, and anything else the system flagged. In the new update, the location of the AI writing score has been moved to the top of the page. The AI writing score can help determine whether a submission was written or paraphrased using AI. Blue highlighting represents AI writing, and purple highlighting represents AI paraphrasing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AI writing score should be used as additional information and should not solely determine whether a student has violated academic integrity standards. No AI detection tool is fully reliable, so it should not be used as the sole basis for academic integrity decisions. Instead, it should be treated as a starting point. The FAQ link in Feedback Studio answers a variety of questions about how the detection works and what it detects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The flags tool determines whether something unusual is going on with the submission, such as suspicious characters or hidden text that may be trying to interfere with the AI detector. However, the tool can produce false positives, so make sure to review any flags carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grading Documents<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you set up Turnitin assignments using the method discussed previously, you will no longer be able to use SpeedGrader to grade them. Instead, grading will be done in Feedback Studio using the grade box at the top of the page. It operates the same way as SpeedGrader, just in a new location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Second Method for Creating a Turnitin Assignment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another way to create a Turnitin assignment is by clicking the <strong>+ Assignment<\/strong> button in the <strong>Assignments<\/strong> tab. When creating an assignment with a file submission required, you will now be able to add a document processing app after the Assign Access section. Turnitin will be the only app option. Particularly important for transparency are establishing clear assignment group weights and incorporating extra credit. When using a points-based system, you do not need to assign weights to different groups of assignments. Instead, you can adjust how many points each assignment is worth in the Assignments tab of your course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When using a percentage-based system, it is important to assign a percentage to each assignment group. If grade weights are already set up, you will not be prompted to configure them again in the Assignment settings. To set up grade weights, click the three-dot menu and select \u201cAssignment Group Weights.\u201d From there, you can adjust the weights for each group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Course Settings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the Course Details section in the Settings tab on the left-hand navigation bar of your Canvas course, you can change your course grading scheme. By default, Canvas uses a standard grading scheme, but you can adjust it to your preferences. You can modify the grade ranges for A\u2019s, B\u2019s, C\u2019s, and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grade Book<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gradebook displays all individual assignments. After these, you will see the assignment group grades. Using the search bar, you can look up any student in the course and view their assignment grades. You can also use it to search for specific assignments. Using the filters, you can sort by assignment groups, student groups, status, submissions, and start or end dates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gradebook settings can significantly impact how you manage grading. For example, you can apply automatic late penalties to assignments submitted after the deadline. Additionally, you can adjust the grade posting policy by choosing whether grades are posted automatically or manually. You can also enable a final grade override in the settings, which can be useful for adding extra credit to a student\u2019s overall grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another way to add extra credit is by using SpeedGrader. First, click on an individual quiz in the gradebook, then open SpeedGrader. Once there, you can add extra credit points in the Fudge Points section. Alternatively, you can create an extra credit assignment within your assignment groups and manually enter points for it in the gradebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Want to learn more?
