Pulse Quality and Nutritional Breeding

Team Member Friday: Charlie Kresser

Charlie Kresser is a freshman in the PES department at Clemson university. Eager to make the most of his college experience, he actively sought out opportunities for undergraduate research. His dedication led him to Dr. Dil of the Pulse Quality and Breeding Lab, who recognized his potential and welcomed him onto the team. Despite being the youngest member, Charlie has quickly proven himself, immersing himself in lab work and learning alongside experienced peers. His lab mates have been supportive, guiding him through lab protocols, paper writing, presentation skills, and the intricacies of plant breeding.

Over the past semester, Charlie has not only adapted to lab life but has also made significant contributions. He is now the lead author on his first research poster, presenting his findings at the NAPIA & BIC conference. The poster speaks on the nutritional benefits of pulses, emphasizing their abundance in essential vitamins and minerals, their role in reducing disease risk, and the under-consumption of pulses in the United States despite their affordability. Charlie’s conclusion underscores the importance of raising awareness about pulse crops to promote healthier dietary habits nationwide.

It’s remarkable that Charlie, at such an early stage in his college career, has already achieved publication and presentation success. With his determination and ambition, the future holds boundless opportunities for him beyond undergraduate studies. Overall, Charlie’s journey exemplifies a promising start to his academic endeavors, setting the stage for a bright and impactful future. He looks to the horizon and knows he wants to continue his higher education experience past the undergraduate level. Wish Charlie your best as he continues to grow and experience what research and the lab have to offer!”
