Introducing Stephanie Henry: Leading the Way for Women in Science and Engineering at Clemson University!

Meet Stephanie Henry, the Women In Science and Engineering (WISE) Associate Director.

By:  Beth Anne Johnson

We’re thrilled to welcome Stephanie Henry as the new Associate Director of Women In Science and Engineering (WISE) here at PEER & WISE. With a passion for youth outreach and a wealth of experience in student services, Stephanie brings a fresh perspective and boundless enthusiasm to our team.

“Expect great work from Stephanie,” shares Serita Acker, Executive Director of PEER & WISE. “Stephanie has a strong work ethic; she is an emerging leader that you want to watch, and the students have so much to gain under her leadership.”

When asked what initially drew her to join our team at PEER WISE, Stephanie shared, “I started my Clemson career working with youth programs, I was familiar with PEER & WISE from very early on. It was known as being one of those long-standing flagship programs at Clemson. Although I enjoyed my work with Graduate Student Services, I wanted to have an opportunity to put my degree in Youth Development to work, as well. This position was the perfect blend of student services and youth outreach.”

Stephanie’s background is as diverse as it is impressive, with extensive experience in working with youth, pre-collegiate programs, nonprofits, and student services. “In my current role, I get to do a little of all those things!” she shared enthusiastically.

What excites Stephanie the most about being part of our team? “I feel like I get to do something different every day. There aren’t many days here that look the same, and I enjoy and appreciate that. For the first time in a long time, I feel like I am getting the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others, especially the WISE mentors. They are one of the best components of the job!”

As for her goals during her time here, Stephanie is focused on making a tangible impact on student development. “I want the whole campus to know who our mentors are. I want them to be identifiable by the way they conduct themselves outside of our office and for the impact they have on other students. PEER & WISE has strong academics, and I’ll continue that legacy by teaching students areas like self-awareness, communication, emotional intelligence, stress management, and leadership skills.”

Outside of work, Stephanie enjoys spending time with her family, attending football games (go Tigers and Carolina Panthers!), and indulging in her love for live music events. “I’m always buying concert and music festival tickets,” she admits with a smile. “Besides that, I tend to be a homebody and spend as much time on the couch with my two dogs and four cats as possible.”

Join us in welcoming Stephanie to the PEER WISE family! We’re excited to see the incredible impact she’ll make on our students and community.

Spring into Success: A 5-Step Guide to Enhance Your Performance

By:  Serita Acker, PEER WISE Executive Director

Hey, Clemson Tigers! Serita Acker here, and I’m excited to share some wisdom on enhancing your spring performance. As we transition into a new season, it’s the perfect time to take a step back, reassess, and set the stage for success. Here are five steps to elevate your spring performance:

Step 1: Pause, Reflect, and Ask Yourself: “What can I do better?”
Spring is a time of renewal; the first step to enhance your performance is to hit the pause button. Take a moment to reflect on your recent experiences, challenges, and successes. Ask yourself, “What can I do better?” This simple yet powerful question sets the foundation for growth and improvement.

Step 2: Create an Action Plan
Once you’ve identified areas for improvement, it’s time to turn your reflections into action. Craft a detailed action plan outlining specific steps to address your identified areas of growth. Break it down into manageable tasks, set realistic deadlines, and create a roadmap to guide your journey towards improvement.

Step 3: Build Intention into Performance
Intentionality is the key to success. Infuse purpose into your actions and decisions. Define your goals clearly, and align every step of your action plan with those objectives. When your efforts are guided by intention, you’ll find greater focus and purpose in your daily tasks, leading to more meaningful and impactful results.

Step 4: Check-In, Create Checks and Balances
Regular check-ins are crucial to ensure you’re staying on track with your action plan. Establish checks and balances to measure progress and performance. Set milestones, evaluate your achievements, and be open to adjusting your strategy if needed. Accountability is a powerful motivator, and consistent check-ins keep you accountable for your goals.

Step 5: Rest – Nurture Your Brain with Quality Sleep and Nutrition
Last but certainly not least, prioritize rest. Your brain is the powerhouse behind your performance, and it deserves proper care. Ensure you’re getting enough quality sleep, nourish your body with nutritious foods, and create a holistic approach to well-being. Remember, your brain consumes the most calories in your body, so give it the rest it deserves to recharge and perform at its best.

As we dive into spring, let’s embrace these five steps to enhance our performance. Whether you’re a student, faculty member, or staff, these principles apply universally. Here’s to a season of growth, success, and achieving your fullest potential! Go Tigers!

Why opt for Clemson?

I decided on Clemson for the overwhelming sense of family I felt when visiting here. As a freshman, moving 900 miles away from home can be scary, but I knew Clemson would feel like a home away from home. Clemson also has a reputable engineering program specializing in bioengineering and has a ton of resources available for engineering students. I knew I would fit right in here and have loved every year since.

Future Goals?

I hope to work in medical device development or biomechanical analysis.

CECAS and PEER/WISE involvement?

I worked as a UPIC intern under Brittany Sanders for the PEER/WISE department during my senior year. I am working again with Brittany this year as the Graduate Project Coordinator for GE’s Next Engineers Greenville program.

Highlights from Clemson Experiences?

I studied abroad in Valencia, Spain, during my sophomore year (2019).

Special awards or involvement?

I was Vice President of Recruitment for Pi Beta Phi.
