Celebrating Excellence: PEER WISE Honors Standout Students

By: Beth Anne Johnson

Spring has arrived in full bloom on Clemson’s campus. As daffodils brighten the landscape and students gear up for finals, it’s also a time to pause and celebrate the incredible work happening within our community. At PEER WISE, that means honoring students who go above and beyond to support their peers and lead with purpose.

Each year, PEER WISE presents two prestigious awards: the Jacquelwyn Willis Anthony Award and the Robert W. Snelsire Service Prize. These honors recognize students who have made a lasting impact on the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences (CECAS) through leadership, mentorship, and service.

The Jacquelwyn Willis Anthony Award, established by alumna Janine Anthony Bowen in honor of her mother, celebrates a student who has provided exceptional service to the PEER program. This year’s recipient is Jynaia Thomas, a senior in Mechanical Engineering, recognized for her outstanding contributions to student recruitment and outreach.

The Robert W. Snelsire Service Prize commemorates the legacy of Dr. Bob Snelsire, a beloved professor of electrical engineering known for his dedication to student success. This year’s award goes to junior biomedical engineering student Daphne Gomez Escudero, who was honored for her outstanding mentorship of new students while maintaining excellence in undergraduate research.

“Our students work hard all year, but Jynaia and Daphne truly stand out,” said Serita Acker, Executive Director of PEER WISE. “They’ve helped recruit future engineers, support new students, and demonstrate the kind of leadership and professional skills that employers look for. We’re incredibly proud of them.”

Lisa Jackson, Associate Director of PEER, shared, “When Serita asked who should be nominated, Jynaia came to mind immediately. Her conversations with prospective students have made a real impact—one family even said she was the reason their child chose Clemson.”

Stephanie Henry, Associate Director of WISE, added, “Daphne is radiant. She’s a thoughtful mentor who inspires confidence in others. Her example helps students grow into researchers and leaders.”

Both students were recognized by the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences during an awards ceremony held on Thursday, April 10th.

Meet the Mentor – Jynaia Thomas

By: Beth Anne Johnson

At Clemson, success isn’t just about making the grade—it’s about finding a path that challenges and inspires you. Jynaia Thomas, a senior majoring in Mechanical Engineering, knows this firsthand. Hailing from Columbia, SC, she has spent the past four years pushing boundaries, solving complex problems, and embracing the growth that comes with every challenge.

Her advice? “If whatever you’re studying in school is hard, always give yourself grace and have patience. You got this.”

Jynaia understands that perseverance is key, but so is self-compassion. Engineering is demanding, but she’s learned that progress isn’t about perfection—it’s about showing up, learning, and moving forward, one step at a time.

“Sometimes we’re our own toughest critics,” she shares. “But I’ve realized that growth happens when you allow yourself to make mistakes and learn from them. Be kind to yourself—you’re doing better than you think.”

When she’s not deep into her studies, Jynaia is committed to helping others navigate their own journeys. Whether it’s sharing study strategies, offering words of encouragement, or simply being a listening ear, she’s the kind of mentor who reminds you that you’re capable of more than you think.

You Belong Here: Words of Wisdom for First-Generation College Students

By:  Serita Acker, Executive Director of PEER WISE

As a first-generation college student, you are stepping into uncharted territory. You’re not only pursuing higher education for yourself, but you’re also paving the way for others in your family and community. And let me tell you something important: you belong here.

I’ve seen and experienced firsthand the unique challenges first-generation students face, but I’ve also witnessed their incredible resilience and strength. You may feel the weight of expectation or uncertainty, but trust me—you can do this. I am a living testament. Here are some thoughts to keep in mind as you navigate this new chapter in your life:

1. You Are a Trailblazer
Being the first in your family to attend college is an extraordinary achievement. It means you’re setting an example for those who come after you. Your journey is inspiring because it shows that the barriers placed before you aren’t insurmountable. Every step you take opens doors for future generations.

Don’t be afraid to embrace this role. Yes, it comes with challenges, but it also comes with great rewards. You are redefining what’s possible for yourself and others who will follow in your footsteps. Wear that title of “trailblazer” proudly because you earned it.

2. Seek Resources—and Use Them!
No one gets through college alone. One of the best pieces of advice I can give you is to seek out resources early and often. You don’t have to wait until you’re struggling to ask for help.

Whether it’s mentoring programs, scholarships, or transitional support programs, take full advantage of everything your college offers. PEER WISE and similar programs exist to help you thrive academically and personally. Mentors can provide guidance, share valuable experiences, and help you navigate the unfamiliar waters of college life.

Scholarship opportunities are also critical. As a first-gen student, financial resources are specifically available to help ease the burden. Never hesitate to ask questions or explore scholarship opportunities—these funds are there to support your success.

3. Find Your Community
The journey through college can sometimes feel isolating, especially when it feels like you’re the only one experiencing certain challenges. That’s why it’s so important to connect with other first-generation students. You’re not alone; building relationships with people who understand your background can make all the difference.

For example, Clemson’s PEER WISE program is a great place to meet others who share your experiences. Forming these connections will give you a support system to lean on during the highs and lows of college life.

4. Pay It Forward

As you move through your college experience, remember that you are a role model for others. Look for opportunities to give back, whether through mentoring younger students or volunteering in programs that support other first-gen students.

By paying it forward, you’re continuing the legacy of trailblazing that got you here. Helping someone else succeed strengthens your community and reinforces the fact that you belong here—and so do they.

Final Thoughts
Remember, you’ve earned your place at this University. You are capable, resilient, and deserving of every opportunity that comes your way. The path may not always be easy, but remember that you are not alone. An entire community is here to support you, and we believe in your success.
You’ve got this. Keep pushing forward, seek support when needed, and never forget—you belong here.

With warmth and gratitude,
Serita Acker

PEER WISE Connections: A Pathway to Professional Success

By:  Beth Anne Johnson

Mark Allen Flyer

On Tuesday, September 17th, the Department of PEER WISE at Clemson University hosted another installment of the PEER WISE Connections series. This professional development event brings together current students, alumni, and industry professionals to foster learning, networking, and growth. This week’s session featured Clemson alum, Mark Allen, a seasoned engineer who shared invaluable insights from his career journey.

Why This Event Matters

PEER WISE Executive Director Serita Acker emphasized the importance of connecting students with those who have walked a similar path. “These events matter because students get to learn from professionals who were in their shoes not too long ago,” Acker explained. “Our guest speakers understand our students’ challenges, and their advice comes from firsthand experience.”

The series is designed to bridge the gap between academic life and the professional world. Students gain practical advice and see what’s possible for them once they leave Clemson. It’s about showing them a clear pathway to success and giving them the tools and inspiration they need.

From Student to Professional

During the event, Lisa Jackson, PEER Associate Director during Mark’s time as a student, shared her thoughts on witnessing the growth of students from their early days in the PEER WISE office to flourishing professionals. “There’s no greater joy than seeing students thrive—from studying in the office to working in labs with the latest and greatest technology. It’s amazing to see how far they’ve come, not just academically but in their personal and professional lives,” said Jackson. Her enthusiasm reflects the core mission of PEER WISE: to support students holistically as they transition from learners to leaders in their fields.

Mark Allen’s Self-Written Laws for Success

The event’s highlight was Mark Allen’s talk, where he shared his journey from being a Clemson student to becoming a successful engineer. His self-written “Laws for Successful Engineers” offered students actionable advice on how to navigate their professional paths.

“First, join professional societies,” Mark advised. “This isn’t just about padding your résumé—it’s about building a community and staying connected to the latest developments in your field.” Being part of a professional network gives students access to mentorship, job opportunities, and critical knowledge that can set them apart from their peers.

“Second, get experience—lots of it—and don’t be afraid to find out what you like and what you don’t like.” Mark’s emphasis on real-world experience resonated with the students. He encouraged them to take internships, co-ops, or part-time jobs to explore different industries and roles. “You might discover that what you thought was your dream job isn’t actually what you want to do—and that’s okay. The earlier you figure it out, the better.”

“Finally, make connections.” Mark stressed that the relationships students build now can profoundly impact their careers. “It’s not just about networking to get a job—it’s about forming real relationships with people who can help guide you, challenge you, and open doors you didn’t even know existed.”

The PEER WISE Impact

Mark’s journey is a testament to the impact that PEER WISE can have on students’ lives. Events like PEER WISE Connections give students the unique opportunity to engage with successful alumni and industry professionals who can offer advice and guidance as they prepare for their careers.

As Serita Acker reminded everyone, “PEER WISE is about more than just academic success—it’s about equipping our students with the tools, connections, and confidence they need to thrive in their careers.”

Looking Ahead

This event is just one of many in the PEER WISE Connections series, which will continue throughout the academic year. It serves as a reminder that Clemson students are part of a broader community of professionals eager to support and uplift them. Students are encouraged to attend future sessions to continue building their network and gaining insight from those who have successfully navigated the transition from college to career.

PEER WISE Connections: February Recap with Dr. Lauren Garner

By: Beth Anne Johnson

In February, PEER WISE hosted a motivating event featuring the esteemed Dr. Lauren Garner. As the Executive Director of PEER WISE, Serita Acker, succinctly shared, “If I had one word to summarize the words of wisdom Lauren gave PEER & WISE, it would be tenacity.” Garner’s journey exemplifies the power of determination and its profound impact on both personal and professional success.

Garner’s professional journey is noteworthy and a tremendous example of how to honor and achieve your dreams. A board-certified pediatric pharmacy specialist at the University of North Carolina Medical Center, she has dedicated her career to serving the pediatric hematology oncology community. Raised in rural South Carolina, Garner’s roots at Clemson University laid the foundation for her passion for pediatric care. She pursued her doctorate of pharmacy at the Medical University of South Carolina, where her dedication to pediatric medicine flourished.

Throughout her career, Garner has embraced the importance of resilience and adaptability. Lisa Jackson, PEER Associate Director, reflected on Garner’s insightful advice: “I love how Lauren reminded students to not stop at ‘no’ and to think of ‘no’ as more so a ‘not now’ or to dive deeper and ask more questions.” Garner’s emphasis on perseverance resonated deeply with attendees, highlighting the significance of navigating setbacks with determination and grace.

During the event, Garner emphasized that our journeys are inherently non-linear, punctuated by obstacles and challenges. However, she underscored the importance of maintaining composure and unwavering determination. As she aptly stated, “Persistency and consistency are key.” Garner’s commitment to her patients and her pursuit of excellence serve as an inspiration for all aspiring healthcare professionals, especially our young members of the Clemson Family.

Outside of work, Garner enjoys running and spending quality time with her beloved dog, Anson. Her holistic approach to life serves as a reminder that success is not solely defined by professional accolades but by the joy found in everyday moments. This is a lesson we want all students at PEER and WISE to know – seek life with both determination and joy.

Dr. Lauren Garner’s commitment to excellence and ability to overcome challenges demonstrates the importance of perseverance. We can find inspiration in Dr. Garner’s approach as we face our own obstacles with determination. By working together, we can accomplish remarkable feats and leave a meaningful imprint on our world.
