As PEER & WISE’s Executive Director, I love and cherish every PEER WISE Experience (PWE) cohort. This program holds a special place in my heart, and I’m thrilled to share why it’s one of my favorites.

The PEER WISE Experience is designed to give students a head start on their Clemson journey. It offers an invaluable glimpse into what a first-year experience will be like helping students transition smoothly into the College of Engineering, Computing, and Applied Sciences. Through PWE, students meet fellow students in their major, forge early friendships, and take introductory classes in General Engineering, Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, Excel, College Readiness, and Research. Not only do students get a taste of college life, but they also earn three hours of college credit.

One of the most rewarding aspects of PWE is witnessing the growth and confidence that our students develop. They are not just taking classes but becoming part of a supportive community that believes in their potential. From day one, they can access resources and guidance to help you navigate your first year’s challenges. Not to mention, they become fast friends.

What makes this program truly exceptional is our 100% retention rate for PWE students who continue on to the General Engineering program. This remarkable achievement reflects our students’ and staff’s dedication and hard work. It is a testament to the strength of the community we’ve built together. I often say that PWE is not just an introduction to Clemson—it’s the foundation of your future success.

Our students make the most of this experience. They engage actively in your classes, participate in all the activities, and connect with peers and mentors. Together, we build a strong foundation for the academic journey.

To our 2024 PWE students, welcome to the Clemson Family. We are excited to support and cheer you on every step of the way. Together, we’ll achieve great things!

At PEER WISE, we’re all about fostering leadership, inclusion, and excellence in STEM. We’re thrilled to share that our Executive Director, Serita Acker, recently lit up Thermo Fisher’s prestigious Leadership Development Program as one of four panelists. The session, themed “Owning Your Seat at the Table,” was all about achieving balance and health in both professional and personal spheres.

Serita Acker’s dedication to empowering voices in STEM is at the heart of her work. At Thermo Fisher, she addressed emerging leaders, sharing invaluable insights on maintaining well-being while excelling in their careers.

Achieving Balance and Health in Leadership

Serita emphasized the importance of self-awareness, resilience, and community support. She shared practical strategies for leaders to not only claim their space in their professional environments but to thrive by prioritizing their health and well-being.

“Owning your seat at the table is not just about being present; it’s about being your best self. Balancing professional demands with personal health is key to sustainable success. When you care for yourself, you are better equipped to lead and inspire others,” said Serita Acker.

PEER WISE Alumna Dajonia Jackson, now a successful professional at Thermo Fisher, echoed Serita’s sentiments and shared her journey of growth and leadership.

“Having Serita Acker as a mentor has been transformative. Her guidance on balancing career aspirations with personal health has been invaluable. Her message at Thermo Fisher resonated deeply with me, reinforcing the importance of self-care in achieving professional excellence,” said Dajonia Jackson.

Building a Stronger Community

The session at Thermo Fisher underscored the mission of PEER WISE: to support and develop leaders who are not only capable and competent but also healthy and balanced. Serita’s talk was a testament to the power of mentorship and the impact of a supportive community.

Serita Acker, the esteemed Executive Director of PEER WISE, recently took the stage as the keynote speaker at the National Convening on the State of Mental Health in STEM. This significant event brought together professionals and thought leaders from across disciplines to discuss the intersection of STEM and mental health. Acker’s keynote address highlighted the critical need for rest in our work and the importance of listening and empowering our leaders.

In her speech, Serita emphasized, “It is essential we rest in our work and that we listen and empower our leaders.” She underscored that true leadership involves not just guiding but also actively supporting and believing in one’s team. Acker elaborated on several key practices that embody this approach:

• Open Door Policies: Creating an environment where team members feel comfortable approaching their leaders with ideas, concerns, and feedback.
• Sabbatical Support: Encouraging and providing opportunities for leaders to take sabbaticals, ensuring they have the time to rest, rejuvenate, and return with renewed vigor.
• Solution-Driven Conversations: Focusing on constructive and proactive dialogues that lead to effective problem-solving and innovation. 
• Believing Your Team Members: Trusting and valuing the insights and contributions of team members, which fosters a culture of mutual respect and collaboration.

Serita’s involvement in the conference was a testament to the strong relationships she builds and the mentorship she provides within the PEER WISE community. Among those she mentors is Beth Anne Johnson, the PEER WISE Communication Coordinator. Beth Anne shared her gratitude and admiration for Serita, stating, “It is a privilege to be mentored and sponsored by Serita Acker. Her leadership is characterized by genuine care and the ability to inspire action in others. Presenting alongside her was an honor and a testament to her impactful guidance.”

The opportunity for Serita to speak at the conference arose from the impactful connections she has nurtured over the years. At PEER & WISE, our mission revolves around one central theme: ensuring every student within CECAS has an unforgettable Clemson experience. And to achieve this, we’ve recently welcomed Levi Roach as our Outreach & Operations Manager. With a wealth of diverse experiences and a passion for fostering connections, Levi is set to make an indelible mark on our team.

When asked what initially drew him to our department, Levi eloquently states, “PEER & WISE is a wonderful department focused on the student experience and ensuring that all students have an amazing experience within CECAS.” His previous roles, including serving as a 911 dispatcher for Clemson University and as a Program Coordinator for Access, Belonging, Inclusive Excellence in CECAS, have equipped him with a unique skill set perfectly tailored for his new position.

When discussing his goals for his time with us, Levi’s ambition shines through. “I hope to accomplish many things in this role,” he says. “I want to ensure that all outreach events are top-tier, filled with powerful information and exciting adventures for students.” Levi’s vision extends beyond just events; he aims to fostering an environment of belonging and accessibility to Clemson students as well. “What excites me the most about being a part of this team,” Levi shares, “is leading the PEER & WISE tutors, allowing me to stretch my legs and provide real connections with students fully.”

Beyond his professional endeavors, Levi’s interests and hobbies offer a glimpse into his multifaceted personality. From the meticulous art of wedding planning to his love for photography, Levi finds joy in organization and creativity alike. As an unapologetic Swiftie, he revels in the empowering melodies of Taylor Swift and delights in engaging with fellow fans.

Moreover, Levi is deeply committed to giving back to his community, serving as the Chair of the LGBTQ Commission and actively participating in community events. His dedication to fostering understanding and inclusivity is a testament to his character and values.

In Levi Roach, PEER&WISE has found a passionate advocate and leader. His dedication to enhancing the student experience and promoting inclusivity aligns seamlessly with our mission. We are thrilled to welcome Levi to our team and look forward to the positive impact he will undoubtedly make. We’re thrilled to welcome Stephanie Henry as the new Associate Director of Women In Science and Engineering (WISE) here at PEER & WISE. With a passion for youth outreach and a wealth of experience in student services, Stephanie brings a fresh perspective and boundless enthusiasm to our team.

“Expect great work from Stephanie,” shares Serita Acker, Executive Director of PEER & WISE. “Stephanie has a strong work ethic; she is an emerging leader that you want to watch, and the students have so much to gain under her leadership.”

When asked what initially drew her to join our team at PEER WISE, Stephanie shared, “I started my Clemson career working with youth programs, I was familiar with PEER & WISE from very early on. It was known as being one of those long-standing flagship programs at Clemson. Although I enjoyed my work with Graduate Student Services, I wanted to have an opportunity to put my degree in Youth Development to work, as well. This position was the perfect blend of student services and youth outreach.”

Stephanie’s background is as diverse as it is impressive, with extensive experience in working with youth, pre-collegiate programs, nonprofits, and student services. “In my current role, I get to do a little of all those things!” she shared enthusiastically.

What excites Stephanie the most about being part of our team? “I feel like I get to do something different every day. There aren’t many days here that look the same, and I enjoy and appreciate that. For the first time in a long time, I feel like I am getting the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others, especially the WISE mentors. They are one of the best components of the job!”

As for her goals during her time here, Stephanie is focused on making a tangible impact on student development. “I want the whole campus to know who our mentors are. I want them to be identifiable by the way they conduct themselves outside of our office and for the impact they have on other students. PEER & WISE has strong academics, and I’ll continue that legacy by teaching students areas like self-awareness, communication, emotional intelligence, stress management, and leadership skills.”

Outside of work, Stephanie enjoys spending time with her family, attending football games (go Tigers and Carolina Panthers!), and indulging in her love for live music events. “I’m always buying concert and music festival tickets,” she admits with a smile. “Besides that, I tend to be a homebody and spend as much time on the couch with my two dogs and four cats as possible.”

Ah, summer—the perfect time for students to relax, recharge, and make the most of their experiences, whether they’re embarking on an internship, co-op, Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU), or job opportunity. As you dive into this exciting chapter of your academic journey, I’m here to offer some invaluable advice on how to maximize your summer and truly thrive wherever you are.

1. Be Grateful and Gracious

First and foremost, approach your summer experience with gratitude and grace. Whether you’re interning at a prestigious company, conducting groundbreaking research, or gaining hands-on experience in your field, remember to appreciate the opportunity before you. Embrace each day with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn, and you’ll be amazed at the doors that open for you.

2. Ask for Help

Don’t be afraid to seek guidance and support along the way. If you encounter challenges or uncertainties, contact mentors, supervisors, or peers for assistance. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness—it’s a testament to your commitment to growth and development. Even more so, no one is ever expected to know it all alone. Remember, we’re all in this together, and there’s strength in collaboration.

3. Network

Take advantage of every opportunity to expand your network and connect with professionals in your field. Attend networking events, join industry-related groups or forums, and engage with fellow students and colleagues. Building meaningful relationships and establishing a strong professional network can open doors to future opportunities and enrich your academic and career journey.

4. Reflect

Set aside time for introspection and reflection throughout the summer. Pause to assess your goals, progress, and experiences. What have you learned? What challenges have you overcome? What areas do you want to focus on moving forward? There is data in knowing what you do and do not want in your career. Reflecting on your experiences will help you gain clarity, insight, and direction as you navigate your academic and career path.

5. Remember Your Community

Finally, don’t forget the importance of community and giving back. Whether it’s volunteering your time, mentoring others, or simply supporting your peers, find ways to contribute to the communities that have supported you. Pay it forward and make a positive impact wherever you go.

As you embark on your summer journey, remember that every experience, big or small, can shape your future and contribute to your growth and development. Embrace each opportunity with enthusiasm, curiosity, and a spirit of adventure. With the right mindset and approach, you’ll make this summer one to remember.

As we embark on the April recap of PEER WISE Connections, prepare to be captivated by the extraordinary journey of Melissa DeSantiago, a shining star within our community. Melissa’s story is noteworthy, filled with determination, passion, and a commitment to making a difference.

Serita Acker, Executive Director of PEER WISE, beautifully encapsulates Melissa’s impact, describing her as nothing short of inspiring. Melissa’s multifaceted trajectory from undergraduate to Ph.D. candidate is a testament to her unwavering dedication and passion for making a difference.

“Melissa is the epitome of inspiration,” Serita Acker remarks. “Her ability to seamlessly transition from industry to academia while staying true to her roots in PEER WISE is truly remarkable. She embodies the spirit of our organization and serves as a beacon of hope for aspiring scholars everywhere.”

Indeed, Melissa’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of friendship and mentorship. Beth Anne, PEER WISE Community Engagement Coordinator and close friend of Melissa sheds light on their profound bond, emphasizing its pivotal role in her personal and professional success.

“Melissa’s friendship has been the cornerstone of my journey,” Beth Anne reflects. “From our days as undergraduates to navigating the challenges of adulthood, her unwavering support and guidance have been instrumental. I owe much of my success to her, and it’s through her that I discovered the invaluable opportunities PEER WISE offers, first as an undergraduate myself and now as a working professional. I am so thankful our students had the opportunity to connect with her.”

Melissa’s trajectory is nothing short of extraordinary. As a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, her research in exposure science and environmental epidemiology is paving the way for meaningful change. Collaborating with the ongoing Maule Cohort (MAUCO) study in Chile, Melissa’s innovative approach to assessing environmental and occupational exposures to agrochemical mixtures is poised to impact vulnerable working communities significantly.

Melissa shares her wisdom with students, advising them, “Follow your instincts and values with conviction. You will never be happy if you compromise yourself or your values. You know what work still needs to be done, so go out there and do it because the world needs you.”

PEER WISE Connections is a professional development series hosted by the PEER WISE department that introduces current students to alumni and industry professionals. Serita shares, “Melissa is the perfect speaker to end the 2023 to 2024 academic year with because she has a heart of gold. May all PEER WISE students see her heart and, in her likeness, do a world of good.”

In February, PEER WISE hosted a motivating event featuring the esteemed Dr. Lauren Garner. As the Executive Director of PEER WISE, Serita Acker, succinctly shared, “If I had one word to summarize the words of wisdom Lauren gave PEER & WISE, it would be tenacity.” Garner’s journey exemplifies the power of determination and its profound impact on both personal and professional success.

Garner’s professional journey is noteworthy and a tremendous example of how to honor and achieve your dreams. A board-certified pediatric pharmacy specialist at the University of North Carolina Medical Center, she has dedicated her career to serving the pediatric hematology oncology community. Raised in rural South Carolina, Garner’s roots at Clemson University laid the foundation for her passion for pediatric care. She pursued her doctorate of pharmacy at the Medical University of South Carolina, where her dedication to pediatric medicine flourished.

Throughout her career, Garner has embraced the importance of resilience and adaptability. Lisa Jackson, PEER Associate Director, reflected on Garner’s insightful advice: “I love how Lauren reminded students to not stop at ‘no’ and to think of ‘no’ as more so a ‘not now’ or to dive deeper and ask more questions.” Garner’s emphasis on perseverance resonated deeply with attendees, highlighting the significance of navigating setbacks with determination and grace.

During the event, Garner emphasized that our journeys are inherently non-linear, punctuated by obstacles and challenges. However, she underscored the importance of maintaining composure and unwavering determination. As she aptly stated, “Persistency and consistency are key.” Garner’s commitment to her patients and her pursuit of excellence serve as an inspiration for all aspiring healthcare professionals, especially our young members of the Clemson Family.

Outside of work, Garner enjoys running and spending quality time with her beloved dog, Anson. Her holistic approach to life serves as a reminder that success is not solely defined by professional accolades but by the joy found in everyday moments. This is a lesson we want all students at PEER and WISE to know – seek life with both determination and joy.

Dr. Lauren Garner’s commitment to excellence and ability to overcome challenges demonstrates the importance of perseverance. We can find inspiration in Dr. Garner’s approach as we face our own obstacles with determination. By working together, we can accomplish remarkable feats and leave a meaningful imprint on our world.

The PEER WISE community gathered for an exclusive Q&A session with the phenomenal Jacovia Cherry on a crisp January evening. As the clock struck at 5:00 on Tuesday, January 30th, our screens illuminated, ready to embark on a journey with a distinguished alumna who seamlessly blended her passion for engineering, coaching, and entrepreneurship. “Jacovia is an amazing example for students to see the power of networking and community,” shares Serita Acker, “she goes after the exact life she desires. She has many passions, and she pursues them all. Many students let the fear of failure stop them from pursuing their desired life, but not our Jacovia Cherry.”

Jacovia Cherry: A Multi-Faceted Success Story

A Computer and Electrical Engineering graduate turned Google professional, Middle School Basketball Coach, and small business owner, Cherry embodies the essence of limitless possibilities for PEER WISE students. Her story, punctuated by resilience and achievement, unfolded before us as she shared her insights and experiences.

The Journey Unveiled

Cherry commenced the session by reminding us that every working professional, regardless of current status, once navigated the labyrinth of their initial major’s classes. Her narrative resonated with students and alumni, creating a relatable bridge between past and present Clemson experiences.
“I actually had to take time off from my academics at Clemson,” says Cherry, “During this time, I worked multiple jobs to make ends meet. It was a hard and true wake-up call to say, education is necessary for the life I want for myself.”

Secrets of Perseverance

A beacon of inspiration, Cherry delved into the secrets of perseverance that propelled her toward success. From conquering academic challenges to thriving in a dynamic professional landscape, she emphasized the significance of resilience and commitment to one’s goals. “Ask for help,” says Cherry, “Ask for help and show up. When you ask for community. Your community responds.” Her journey echoed the sentiment that challenges are not roadblocks but stepping stones to growth.

Importance of Community

One of the event’s highlights was Cherry’s emphasis on the community’s pivotal role in her personal and professional growth. She passionately shared how the support and resources provided by PEER & WISE had been instrumental in making her Clemson Experience extraordinary. Her words resonated with the audience, underscoring a supportive community’s profound impact on an individual’s journey.
“Jacovia Cherry was and remains a fantastic PEER & WISE mentor,” exclaims Lisa Jackson, PEER Associate Director, “We want our students to be authentic and intentional leaders, and Jacovia is the very embodiment of this practice.”

Gleaning Insights for Extraordinary Experiences

As Cherry shared her pearls of wisdom, attendees had the opportunity to glean insights into making their own Clemson experiences extraordinary. Whether navigating academic challenges, transitioning into the professional world, or balancing multiple passions, Cherry’s journey was a roadmap for unlocking one’s full potential. The takeaway? Our journeys are not always linear; they have setbacks, but how we react, pivot, and arrive sets our pathway to success forward.
