It depends.\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a certain subset of your audience that will never use a QR code. This could be because they don\u2019t know how they work or because they don\u2019t trust them. Always consider your audience when determining whether to use a QR code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For print pieces that you will hand out or have on display at an event, they can provide a quick way for a user to access your website or a form without having to type in a clunky URL. But one of the biggest mistakes is using QR codes in a digital design. Think social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think about it, you\u2019re on your phone scrolling through Facebook and you see a post for an event. The post is just an image. There\u2019s an eye-catching picture and you want to learn more, but you can\u2019t actually scan the QR code because you\u2019re already on your phone. There is no link provided in the post. What are you going to do? Chances are you\u2019re going to give up and keep scrolling.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now let\u2019s say you\u2019re on your computer and scrolling through your social feed. Are you likely to take out your phone to scan a code on your computer? Probably not. A simple link in the post is a far better option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So, are you saying I should add a link AND a QR code to my social post?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Definitely not! When it comes to social media, QR codes should be avoided. It\u2019s better to include detailed information in your post and not just within a picture. Posts with text tend to perform better than those without, so skip the screenshot of a flyer and opt for a high-quality image with details written in your post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">QR codes aren\u2019t always a good fit for environmental marketing either. For example, a QR code on a billboard isn\u2019t effective. It is impossible for someone traveling down I-85 to scan it while going 70 mph. But a QR code on garden signage might make sense, as it could direct a viewer to a map or additional information about a particular plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When using QR codes for environmental marketing, it\u2019s important to keep an inventory of the codes and where you are linking them. Composition<\/h3>\n<p>When taking a video of yourself using the front\/rear camera, keep the phone eye-level or slightly below to create a low-angle shot. Keep yourself\/the subject in the full frame of the camera to make sure parts of your face or the subject aren\u2019t cut out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"grid-x\">\n<div class=\"cell\">\n<h3>4. Adjust Lighting and Exposure<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Work with natural lighting when filming outside.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Do not film in the middle of the day, unless it is cloudy or overcast, to avoid harsh lighting and high contrast. If you find yourself filming at or around 11am-4pm, consider finding a large patch of shade, or move indoors for your speaking\/interview parts. Make yourself or others look best by filming at the \u201cgolden hour\u201d (one hour before or after sunset\/sunrise). This will soften the shadows on your face and boost the quality of your shots. When filming in sunlight, it is best to have yourself and the camera perpendicular to the sun or aligned with the sun to avoid backlighting of the subject. If aligned with the sun, watch out for shadows of the person filming.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Create proper exposure before you begin filming.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To determine if your exposure is correct, refer to the example images below. Look for any spots that seem too bright on the subject or in the background. This can cause details on your subject to disappear. You can change the exposure (brightness) of the subject on your iPhone by tapping and holding your finger on the subject of the video then slide your finger up or down depending on the desired exposure. If the subject is too dark, slide up to increase exposure. Move closer to the subject if necessary or move unwanted distractions from the frame of the photo. Make sure there are no branded items, graffiti, and non-Clemson or licensed graphics within frame.<\/p>\n<p>When capturing a small object, or an object with a lot of detail, (i.e. flowers or insects) move closer to the subject, DO NOT zoom in. Zooming in decreases the quality of the image, so it is best to physically move the camera closer to the subject when possible.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>3. When deciding between a landscape or portrait orientation, keep in mind that different social media platforms have different formats.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Find leading lines to draw attention to the subject.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When possible, use leading lines in your image to help lead the viewers eye to the subject of your image. These are lines that run from the edge of the photo toward the center of focus as shown in the image on the right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Follow the rule of thirds.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Using the grid of the camera screen, align the subject at intersections of the grid to create the most visually appealing image.<\/p>\n<div class=\"grid-x\">\n<div class=\"cell\">\n<h3>4. Adjust Focus and Exposure<\/h3>\n<p>iPhones automatically guess what the subject of your photo is but doesn\u2019t always get it right. To make the subject in focus, tap the screen where you want to focus.<\/p>\n<p>You can change the exposure (brightness) of the subject on your iPhone in the same way. Tap and hold your finger on the subject of the image then slide your finger up or down depending on the desired exposure. If the subject is too dark, slide up to increase exposure. If the subject is too bright, slide down to decrease exposure. In general, it is better to err on the side of an image in which the subject is a little too dark than a little too bright.<\/p>\n<p>The iPhone camera will default back to its automatic settings when you move your phone from the subject (or if something moves in front of the camera). To prevent this, tap the screen and hold your finger down for a few seconds. When you see AE\/AF LOCK appear in yellow at the top of the camera screen, your settings are saved.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"grid-x\">\n<div class=\"cell\">\n<h3>5. If you don\u2019t add your event to Localist, you\u2019re missing the opportunity to promote it through various webpages across Clemson websites. If you skip this step, a tiger paw is added to your event by default.A calendar feed full of tiger paws will not help a site visitor easily differentiate between event offerings. This will help your event feed to multiple webpages.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<p>Filters include Event Type, Target Audience, Department, and Center\/Institute. You can use any combination of filters, but here are a few tips to make sure your events are getting the widest distribution.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Look through the filters to become familiar with all of the options. CAFLS, Extension and PSA have a lot of options available to them. For example, Cooperative Extension and the South Carolina Botanical Garden are both Event Types. If you have an Extension event at the SCBG, select both. Workshops or Conference\/Forum\/Symposium might be applicable too.<\/li>\r\n<li>You can select multiple options for Target Audience as well. The PSA\/CAFLS web team isn\u2019t currently using these options to pull events to pages, but users can filter by these options on the main calendar site. Again, if you want your events to be seen by as many people as possible, don\u2019t skip this step.<\/li>\r\n<li>The Department filter has the most options and this is really where you get the bang for your buck. Select as many relevant Departments as possible. For example, an Extension program could include all of the following:\r\n<ol>\r\n<li>Cooperative Extension Service<\/li>\r\n<li>Edisto Research and Education Center<\/li>\r\n<li>Horticulture<\/li>\r\n<li>Statewide\u2217<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>This particular event would be pulled to the overall Extension calendar, the Edisto REC calendar, the Horticulture program team calendar and to all 46 county office pages through the usage of the Statewide tag. Had relevant CAFLS academic departments been tagged, the event would have fed onto their calendars as well.Taking the time to properly tag your events will ensure that they appear across as many webpages as possible.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u2217 The Statewide filter should only be used for truly statewide events, for example a 4-H program that is open to all 4-Hers in every county, a field day where growers from all regions may attend or a virtual program that is offered to all regardless of geography.<\/p>\r\n<p>A detailed tutorial is available to <a href=\"http:\/\/media.clemson.edu\/ows\/localist-tutorial.pdf\">learn how to add events<\/a>. They were never intended to be an end-user format for online purposes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navigating PDFs on a mobile device is especially frustrating since the user has no control of page or text size, which leads to zooming, pinching and scrolling in order to access information. Some mobile devices do not support PDFs, so the audience who needs the information could be prevented from accessing it due to their operating system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do You Want People to Read Your Content?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Burying information in PDFs means that most people won\u2019t read it. Participants in several of our recent usability studies on corporate websites and intranets did not appreciate PDFs and skipped right over them. They complained woefully whenever they encountered PDF files and many who opened PDFs quickly abandoned them. <\/p><cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nngroup.com\/articles\/author\/jakob-nielsen\/\">Jakob Nielsen<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nngroup.com\/articles\/author\/anna-kaley\/\">Anna Kaley,\u00a0https:\/\/www.nngroup.com\/articles\/pdf-unfit-for-human-consumption\/<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What this Means for our Websites<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We want to make sure your content is best formatted to reach as many people as possible. And in most cases, this means that the days of exporting a file to a PDF and throwing it online are OVER. If a file is truly meant to be printed by the end-user, PDFs are acceptable. If the information is meant to be consumed digitally, it will need to be converted to HTML. This can add unnecessary and unbalanced white space around the page content. Additional margins can be especially noticeable and irritating when trying to print a folded file like a tri-fold brochure or certificates.<\/p>\n<p>To check or adjust this setting:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the PDF in Acrobat and choose print.<\/li>\n<li>In the print dialog box, preview the print settings under \u201cPage Size &amp; Handling\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>By default, most printers will adjust the page size to \u201cfit\u201d. At this setting, extra white space is added to the file\u2019s pre-set margins.<br \/>\nIf you want the margins to print as designed by the native software, change the handling to \u201cActual size\u201d and the desktop printer will not add white space around the page.
