[{"id":244,"date":"2026-06-15T15:31:46","date_gmt":"2026-06-15T19:31:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.clemson.edu\/rcd\/?p=244"},"modified":"2026-06-15T15:35:58","modified_gmt":"2026-06-15T19:35:58","slug":"scratch-storage-quota-increases-on-palmetto-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.clemson.edu\/rcd\/2026\/06\/15\/scratch-storage-quota-increases-on-palmetto-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Scratch Storage Quota Increases on Palmetto 2"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Research Computing and Data (RCD) team is pleased to announce a significant increase in the scratch storage quota on Palmetto 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Effective immediately, the default scratch storage allocation has been increased from&nbsp;<strong>5 TiB and 5 million files<\/strong>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<strong>10 TiB and 10 million files per user<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Purge Policy Remains in Effect<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This quota increase does not change Palmetto 2\u2019s existing scratch space purge policy. The&nbsp;<code>\/scratch<\/code>&nbsp;filesystem remains a temporary workspace intended for active research and computation, and files that meet the purge criteria remain subject to removal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Users are responsible for understanding and complying with the scratch purge policy. Attempts to circumvent the policy\u2014including actions intended solely to prevent files from being identified as inactive or eligible for purge\u2014are prohibited. RCD reserves the right to remove data associated with such activity without prior notice in order to maintain the health, performance, and fairness of the shared filesystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers should ensure that important data is stored in appropriate long-term storage locations and should not rely on&nbsp;<code>\/scratch<\/code>&nbsp;for archival or permanent storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why the Change?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As research workflows continue to grow in scale and complexity, many users are working with increasingly large datasets, simulation outputs, machine learning training data, and high-throughput analysis pipelines. Based on user feedback and observed usage patterns, RCD has expanded scratch storage capacity to better support these evolving computational needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The updated limits provide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>2\u00d7 more scratch storage capacity<\/strong>&nbsp;(10 TiB)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2\u00d7 higher file count allowance<\/strong>&nbsp;(10 million files)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Greater flexibility for data-intensive workflows<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduced need for users to actively manage scratch space during large projects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About Scratch Storage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<code>\/scratch<\/code>&nbsp;filesystem on Palmetto 2 is designed for temporary, high-performance storage during active computational work. Users should continue to treat scratch space as temporary storage and maintain copies of important data in appropriate long-term storage locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the per-user quota has been increased, users should be aware that scratch storage is a shared resource with finite capacity. The new quota represents the maximum amount of storage and number of files a user may consume, but it does&nbsp;<strong>not<\/strong>&nbsp;guarantee that every user can simultaneously utilize their full allocation. Responsible use of scratch space helps ensure that the filesystem remains performant and available for the entire Palmetto community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Users can monitor their current scratch usage and quota limits at any time using the\u00a0<code>checkquota<\/code>\u00a0command. This service provides no-cost API access to leading open-weight models to all Clemson users. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The service provides access through common API formats including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>OpenAI Compatible Chat Completions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>OpenAI Compatible Embedding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>OpenAI Compatible Responses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anthropic Compatible Messages<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These APIs are widely supported by many AI tools and libraries, including coding assistants such as OpenAI Codex, Claude Code, and OpenCode; chat and RAG interfaces such as OpenWebUI and AnythingLLM; and software libraries such as Pydantic AI, LangChain, and OpenAI SDKs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are no set rate limits or token quotas.  Instead the API has a fair-share scheduling mechanism built in so that if the underlying hardware becomes saturated, requests are held before sending to the underlying engine with priority based on recent usage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.rcd.clemson.edu\/llm\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/docs.rcd.clemson.edu\/llm\/\">our documentation<\/a> for details.  To get started, you will need to <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.rcd.clemson.edu\/llm\/access\/\">request an allocation<\/a> in a process similar to Palmetto, then you can register API keys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As documented in our Acceptable Use Guidelines, any use of the service must remain consistent with <a href=\"https:\/\/ccit.clemson.edu\/cybersecurity\/policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"\">Clemson University IT<\/a> policies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clemson.edu\/ai\/guidelines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"\">Clemson AI guidance<\/a>, and any sponsor, contract, or regulatory requirements that apply to your work. While maintenance work is in progress, all RCD services will be unavailable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the maintenance window we plan on completing the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Minor OS upgrades<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nvidia driver upgrade + CUDA 13 support<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Networking Maintenance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Upgrade to Indigo Data Lake<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are\u00a0<strong>no plans to purge scratch space<\/strong>\u00a0during this maintenance, but users should be mindful that scratch space is never backed up and critical files should always be stored on home or project storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Spring Maintenance is scheduled until \u00a0<strong>Monday, May 11th, 2026, at 9:00 AM<\/strong>. This&nbsp;<strong>preventive maintenance<\/strong>&nbsp;is intended to improve power stability and reduce the risk of unscheduled outages in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result,&nbsp;<strong>Palmetto 2, Indigo, and all other RCD services will be unavailable<\/strong>&nbsp;until the work is completed on&nbsp;<strong>Tuesday, December 23<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any batch jobs that cannot finish before the maintenance window will be&nbsp;<strong>held in the queue<\/strong>, but all <strong>interactive jobs will be canceled<\/strong>.&nbsp;<strong>Data transfers will also be interrupted<\/strong>&nbsp;during this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, during this maintenance window, the\u00a0<strong>K20 and K40 GPUs will be retired<\/strong>\u00a0after\u00a013 and 11 years of service, respectively.
