South Carolina Soybean Rust Update – 7/16

July 16, 2021

SOUTH CAROLINA SOYBEAN RUST NEWS NOTE
16 July 2021

FROM: Jonathan Croft, Clemson Extension Agronomic Agent, Joe Varn, Clemson Extension
Agronomic Agent, and Dr. John Mueller, Extension Soybean Pathologist, Edisto Research
and Education Center.

SOYBEAN RUST HAS NOT BEEN DETECTED IN SOUTH CAROLINA AS OF 16 JULY 2021.

During the week of July 12th – July 16th samples were examined from Barnwell,
Colleton, Hampton, and Orangeburg Counties.

On July 15th, Asian Soybean Rust (ASR) was identified on soybean in Escambia County, in
southern Alabama on the border of the panhandle of Florida. This is the closest find of ASR
on soybean to SC currently. ASR has been identified in kudzu in several counties in south
Georgia during 2021 as of July 16th. The referenced locations of ASR in 2021 were found
on the reporting map at https://www.eddmaps.org/distribution/uscounty.cfm?sub=9298.

We are currently not recommending any foliar fungicide applications for the control of
ASR. If we identify ASR in soybean, we will consider the recommendation of a foliar
fungicide for control, based on the timing of the infection, weather conditions, and crop
potential.
