Student Innovation and Design Competitions

Student innovation and design competitions play a crucial role in education and the broader innovation ecosystem. On top of financial rewards, each competition provides students with experience in practical learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, problem solving, and networking.

The College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CECAS) excels in design competitions every year. We hope to foster each invention to be as successful as our past winners:

  • WEFTEC Student Design Annual Competition 2021 National Winners –
    • Danielle Larsen, Evan Groome, Curtis McClelland, and Danny Greene won the competition with their “F. Wayne Hill Water Resources Center Solids Processing Upgrades.” Their design helped decrease greenhouse gas emissions and reduce grid energy purchases and beat out 17 teams from 4 different countries.
  • SPARK Challenge 2023 Winners
    • Molly Turk, Primita Suresh, Ellie Hatcher, Haley Swank, and Harrison Miller won the 2023 SPARK Challenge with The Better Board. This design enabled a safer experience for patients of emergency transport via extensions of the backboard.
  • ACC InVenture Challenge 2nd Place
    • Kathleen Fallon, Allison Reichart, Sarah Anne Stevens, and Karly Faith Ripple placed second in the Atlantic Coast Conference’s InVenture Challenge with the CatheSure. This device is able to wirelessly detect a shunt malfunction in Hydrocephalus patients, streamlining the diagnostic process.
